I think it's an appalling appointment but it just goes to show all those people that said Purslow was always attracted to "big names" were right.
Rangers aren't that good.
They won 1 trophy out of 9.
They beat a shambles of a Celtic team with an alcoholic manager to a title. Big deal.
The guy has no personality, he doesn't look inspiring once the fact it's "Steven Gerrard" wears off. He's drab, boring and dull. I iisten to him talk and I think 'were you really playing in 2000s' as you talk like a 70 year old man.
He's a proper yer da rolls your sleeves up get in their face gaffer. It's not a good appointment and I fear for the season now.
This is pretty much how I feel tbh. If appointed, I will back him of course. But right now I do fear the worst.

Did he? Experience, yes he had a few years on Gerrard I'll give you that. He finished 9th, 10th and 9th in the Championship with Brentford and he never got close to promotion with Walsall.
I don't see a great deal of difference between Smith and Gerrard in terms of managerial experience to be honest. Smith had more years under his belt but Gerrard has managed in Europe and won a trophy, again not saying he is the right man but I don't recall people making similar comments re Smith.
a
He's won fewer trophies in Scotland than the St Johnstone manager to be fair.

The proposed targets are woeful. Nobody jumps out at me as a decent shout of improving on Smith. Just have this awful feeling we are going to end up with the second coming of Remi Garde.

Having taken a bit of time to reflect on yesterday, I don't think anybody really did themselves justice. Everything was flat, from the players' performance, to the manager's performance, to the fans and the atmosphere. First half was like a morgue, and I get that partially because the performance gave us absolutely nothing to shout about.
The biggest worry for me is that usually I agree with most things Dean says in his post-match but after the game yesterday I am not sure what he saw to inspire any confidence at all. Aside from the 30 seconds where we scored and a further 30 seconds where Watkins hits the bar, we were awful. Totally outfought, outthought and outmuscled all over the pitch by a team who know their roles and have the basics of football down to a fine art.
Not that I want him to go, but I think if we fail to win on Friday then it will be curtains for Smith. I just cannot see who would replace him. Potter turned down Spurs so why would he come to us. Fonseca cannot organise a defence to save his life and Roma fans were glad to see the back of him.
This whole transfer window and start to the season feels a bit 13-14 Spurs post-Bale to me.

Not looking forward to this one at all - not many teams I'd like to play less than West Ham at the moment, which is testament to the job Moyes has done this last year and a bit. Think we will really have to be back to somewhere near our best to get anything out of this one.

Absolutely hooked on Pepsi Max. Can't live without it and I hate myself for it!

Phoenix Nights is absolute class, tied with Peep Show as my favourite comedy series.

I read something once about sitcoms always showing characters in a far more well off position than is actually plausible.
Pretty much all of them have their characters living in nicer houses and a better lifestyle than is realistic.
Frank Grimes in the Simpsons takes the piss out of it I think
Ahh the man who lived above a bowling alley and below another bowling alley...

Maybe not at that point…
but, according to his interview, he was hoping to come back in his Everton/West Brom days and was disappointed to not have been given the chance, even though he put the feelers out with his agent…
Im glad we didn’t kowtow to him…
And I hope we don’t do the same to “Mr Aston Villa with a clause”
I understand this TBF. If we ever reach a point where we are able to turn our noses up at Grealish, we'll have done very well...but it would be very satisfying for him to want to come back at the end of his career and for the club to just leave him hanging.

Would be delighted with 7 and above

I think there is a fine line to walk between actual legendary status and being a "hero" to the fans. Less than a legend, but fondly remembered. For me, players like Laursen and Carew would probably fit into that second category. The closest players to legends in my time supporting the club would probably have to be Mellberg and Ian Taylor. I was born in 92, so I don't really remember much of the sides that last won us trophies. Grealish for me would probably also have been in the "hero" camp and has left short of fulfilling the potential to become a legend.

Yeah I don't think I would want him back either to be honest. Would just smack even more of "doing us a favour" when he rocks up at 33 for a final pay-day. No thank you.

As much as I understand why some people are frustrated at others for being seemingly so hung up on Grealish's words from last year, I have to say I've found the takes and behaviour from other football journalists to be quite distasteful as well. As much as Preece's piece is divisive, it is definitely honest and heartfelt from the point of view of a villa fan, whether you agree with his stance or not.
What I am finding more irritating than Preece's honesty is the sneering condescension of City journalists in particular who feel the need to tell Villa fans that they're overreacting and should get over it. Easy to say when you're the beneficiary of such a transfer. That's doing just as much to wind people up as Grealish's own comments and interviews, in my opinion. To say that Villa fans should be eternally grateful for Grealish's, if we're honest, fairly meagre achievements at the club both does a disservice to everyone else who has played a role in re-establishing us in the prem (NSWE, other players, Deano, etc) and pedals the notion that we should be happy for Grealish to get his "big move". I'm not happy for Grealish, I'm not a Grealish fan. I'm a Villa fan, I want Villa to win things and we arguably stood a better chance of that by keeping him, so naturally it is disappointing to see him go. I really hope we as a club can eventually throw it back in the faces of everyone who is determined to cast us in the role of a perpetual also-ran. Fans are allowed to have ambition as well, not just players.
Rant over.......

You've all got a few years to get over it because I'm sure he'll be back if suitable to all parties towards the tail end of his career.
I'd much prefer if we'd outgrown him by then.

So our business is done according to Ashley Preece? Bit disappointing if true as we all know CM needs strengthening, but hopefully it gives us the scope to address it in Jan if needs be. Hope Sanson can step up and make a big impact once fit.

Well done Malmo, brilliant second half having gone down to 10 men following play acting by Goldson of sevco.
GIRFUY Sevco.
I went to school with Connor Goldson. He was a knob there, and still a knob now it seems.

need him to play. havent got anyone else who will needlessly smash a half volley from a throw in across his own box from the right back to left back position, regardless of the number of opposition players in between.
Love Bert's attempts at crossfield balls. Every game, without fail.

Feel sorry for Bailey that his signing has been overshadowed completely by the Grealish circus.

If JWP does sign, the first few weeks of the season are going to be really interesting in terms of how we line up. I can't quite work my head around how all of this is going to piece together.

The one that hurt me most was Barry in 2009, but Jack has eclipsed that this summer.

I think our current needs are:
forward/striker, Attacking midfielder or winger, CM, Backup CB, and Backup Keeper. Not really bothered who we go with for the two backup spots but for the others where we should be investing I’d like to see:
Striker: Jonathan David
AM/Winger: Marcus Thuram/Darmsgaard/Mikel Oyarzabal
CM:JWP
The AM/Winger bracket is probably dreamland stuff, but we do have the cash so who knows. If we really want to try and make a statement, break the bank for Dani Olmo.
Dani Olmo yes please

Of all the talented players I've seen leave...this one hurts the most.

In terms of Gerrard going back for his former players, I would take Glen Kamara as a defensive midfielder and Ryan Kent for left wing, price dependent. No idea who I would go for as a left back, but somebody who can replicate Matty Cash's dynamism wouldn't go amiss. I really do like Matt Targett but the guy looks absolutely broken of late.
