So, if you believe what you read in the press, we could be on the cusp of signing three players for a combined total of £65m.

You wait all day for a bus, then three come at once.

Haven't you heard mate we've got no money, and we're so slow on signings we're still working on the January 2018 transfer window !

    An entirely plausible situation is:

Watkins - the player wants to be here but (1) Brentford are waiting until the end of the window for desperation to creep in/alternative bidders to enter the fray to inflate the price and put us under pressure, or (2) Brentford quoted a price and reneged on it and we refused to be played and we are waiting for the end of the window to put pressure on them, or (3) Watkins Agent has told him to hang fire as more interest is growing as the window tick down, he thinks he can get a better deal for his client (4) There is genuine and unexpected interest from Spurs and team Watkins are waiting on SPurs to show their hand.

Benrahma - the player want to be here but (1) Brentford are waiting until the end of the season for desperation to creep in/alternative bidders to enter the fray to inflate the price and put us under pressure, or (2) Brentford quoted a price and reneged on it and we refused to be played and we are waiting for the end of the window to put pressure on them, or they are asking a very high price that no one is willing to pay and waiting to see who bids up closest to that price as the end of the window approaches, or (3) Benrahma’s Agent has told him to hang fire as there is more ineterest as the window tick down, he thinks he can get a better deal for his client - both club and salary and term, or (4) Benrahma would prefer to stay in London if the right suitor can be found paying more money.

Edouard - (1) the player wants to leave Celtic and Scottish football. He would prefer Champions League or a prestigious destination and he has not-yet-firmed-up offers from Leicester and a few others but understands that they have other targets and are waiting for this to crystallise before deciding on his destination, or (2) we and others have made an offer that is somewhat short and not yet acceptable to Celtic, but if no offers around their asking price arrive they will consider the offer(s) as will the player and his Agent.

    Rashica - Etc Etc Etc

So maybe we have a firm list of targets but we are prepared to wait rather than accept lower choices.

FFS as if this is the place for considered, reasoned argument ! Don’t you know where you are ?

This all feels like another Lambert era to me.

Having to work on a strict wage budget. Having to find gems in the lower leagues.

Smith has got some job on his hands. Judging by what Smith will be given this window i won't be too hard on him this season.

17th would be a great achievement as of right now

You have literally no clue what the constraints are. We haven't been linked as far as i can tell to any lower league gems.

I don't even know how you manage to get out of bed each morning you're so pessimistic.

The evidence suggests different to how you prttray.

If we had no money, would we really sign a £13M right back ? It's not our most important position to be filled.

Why if we have no money is it reported that we're the only club that offered Bremen what they want for Rashica ?

Why was it widely reported we offered more money to Bournemouth for WIlson than Newcastle did ?

Those players have their own reasons for not wanting to move to Villa, but ambition, and transfer fees are not the reasons.

In what way have the current owners ever not backed their managers that gives you reason to believe they wouldn't now ?

Assuming we were really in for Wilson I’m guessing perhaps Newcastle were prepared to pay most if not all the fee up front whereas perhaps we were looking to structure it over a longer period of time.

Just can’t work out why Newcastle’s offer would be accepted over ours unless the player has made it clear he’d only consider them over us.

To be fair, the reports I read were that we offered more than Newcastle, but the player made it clear that his favoured destination was Newcastle so we withdrew our offer.

Personally I think Bournemouth used us in the same way the Brentford are using Tottenham with Watkins, it’s all about pushing the fee up.

  5. This seems to have gone from nearly done, to him signing for Chelsea, and then to nothing.

Do we think everything was agreed and he’s holding out to see if Chelsea sign Edouard Mendy from Rennes ? Maybe now we feel like the jilted girlfriend and are looking elsewhere.

Of all the keepers we’ve been linked to, I think Romero is the best we can hope for, would love to see him in Goal next week.

  6. From the media leaks last season, it was Smith that didn’t want to go above £20M for Maupay last season.

if we don’t get Watkins this season then I suspect it will be because Smith doesn’t think he’s worth the fee wanted by Brentford.

I do think Smith wants Watkins, and in my opinion, if the fee is £24M or £28M as reported the difference is minimal and we should just get him in now, but perhaps he isn’t our main target.

The last time we bought proven English players on long contracts on big wages made the club spiral into a 10 year obese

I don’t know what fat kids have to do with it, but spiralling into them cannot be right !

I think Leeds will have an advantage over us when signing players from Europe or South America. Bielsa is very highly rated.  Apparently he is selling his vision to new signing.

He wears glasses, so might not be what they all want.

Well I've read between the lines and its a done deal. Its simple when  you do that.

Messi turned us down as he doesnt like balti pies....but for Higuain that was what sealed the deal. He ate all the pies

If a team full or Brentford players were that good they would already be in the Premier League when Smith managed them previously.

Players that are better than what we have, move the squad forward, know how to play with each other and how the manager wants them to play.

Now, that makes me f**king mad. We are either looking at batshit crazy lazy journalism or, our manager wants a team full of Brentford players...

    Rico Henry

    Ezra Konsa

    John Swift

    Said Benrahma

    Diego Jota

    Olly Watkins

It is seriously taking the piss if true that we ars after who the reports say we're after.

Why ? Which of those players don’t you think are good enough for us ? Personally I think they’d all serve us well.

With the exception of Jota who was worth a punt at the price we paid.

Everton agree 25m fee for Allan from Napoli, also they are apparently in talks with Real Madrid about James Rodriquez.

I just don’t see Everton ever learning. When did James Rodriguez last have a good season ? What kind of wages must he be looking for ?

As much as I think they are more attractive than us right now (because of Ancelotti), I’m glad we are not going down this route.

Sorry i am at work and didn't have time to work out how to embed the video.

He has had history with refusing to play for Scotland. Did you know you that?

How many other Premier League players refused to extend their contract out of the 20 teams?

    Fraser is a word removed!

I wasn't aware that he refused to play for Scotland, but he certainly isnt the first player to have done that, and i'm not aware of his reasons for doing it....are you ?

How do you feel about United blocking Smalling from extending his loan at Roma to play in the Champions League ?

Surely it's the same thing ?

Players, Clubs, Fans we're all looking after number 1.
