    It's the Coutinho situation.

You've sold a top player, everyone knows you have money and you're going after someone tied into a long term deal and is the jewel in the crown of his team

You will have to pay through the nose for this transfer to come off.

Do we want to do that for James Ward Prowse?

I mean, I like him. He's decent on the ball his free kicks are the best in Europe in my opinion. He has a lovely strike on him.

    - but honestly I think his passing in open play is just above average, he's very lightweight and not athletically blessed. He is what he is at the stage of his career. I don't see him going another level.

I don't think it makes sense on any level to break the bank for this guy. I'd like to see him in a Villa shirt but it makes no sense. He would definitely be an upgrade on what we have - but it would take 50m- 60m I would presume. Is he a £60m step up on what we have?

Not for me. He's a decent improvement.

I think that JWP is a great player and support the idea that we try and get him, but you have made some really good points here and you’ve made me rethink how much he is worth.. £35M max?

No that I don’t doubt the team, but I’m a little disappointed with suggestions of Axel, JWP and Cantwell given Mackenzie’s ‘reputation’. I suppose it’s dependent on his remit. Perhaps finding the pieces of a jigsaw hiding in plain sight, no bedding in period needed, is a more difficult task.

Alternatively, the press couldn’t have clue.

I know what you mean. I'm hoping that it means that they have great belief in the yougsters coming through i.e. they play safe with current 1st team needs and then test the kids coming through, if they fail to impress, then dip in to the potential hidden gems that they may well be tracking..

  3. I live in Southampton and watched him a lot. always hated him becuase he always scores against us and he generally gets in everyones face. Him, Ollie and McGinn are really going to piss off the oppostion.

    I can't wait, great signing!

  4. I think the boards strategy of buying up as many talented youngsters as possible is a very sound plan, hopefully we can get three world class players maturing in the team at the same time. This then mitigates the Man City effect. They won't be able to nullify our team with one transfer. I know it is a slow burner, but in five years time we will be a real threat in this league.

    My take...

The timelines are different. Jack needs / wants Champions League football now, in the peak of his career. Villa do too, but we're a decade behind City, United, Chelsea and Liverpool.

An NBA team who gets first pick in the draft, generally does so because they were the worst team the previous year. The first pick might be a generational talent, who wants to win it all. Realistically it will take that team a long time to build a roster around him to be able to compete with the mainstays of the league.

We can't move forward as fast as Jack needs us too. Our progress has been phenomenal since NSWE came in, but this step up now to consistent European football will be the hardest and take the longest. Jack doesn't have the same amount of time to waste.

If he goes, I dont blame him. We're both on upward trajectories, his is just faster than ours. Chukwumeka, Ramsey x 2, Barry and Bidace might be the right players, at the right time, to grow with us. Not out grow us.

    Time will tell.

    Great post in my opinion..

I think that Villa have been thinking along these lines from the start of the NSWE ownership, hence buying up as many 18 - 20 year old talent hoping that some of them will stick and become great together..

If he goes and we get 100M then I hope that we spend a proportion of the money on the same strategy.

Just give the 10 shirt to Buendia I suppose.

Just that our press aren’t that sensible.. so they’ll associate the new player even if they’re a defensive midfielder

My middle son is six, just starting to take an interest in Villa and especially Jack. He already has a few kits and one with Grealish on the back.

He genuinely got a little teary-eyed when I told him Jack might be leaving.

I remember how I felt as a young lad myself when Platt went, then again Yorke, Barry...we are just feed for the bigger fish if this Grealish transfer happens.

    So demoralising and almost futile.

I genuinely felt that Jack had the courage, the love and the ability that the others didn’t have.. that he would stay and drag us to the Champions League..

I guess there’s still a slim chance of being right.. we’ll find out soon enough

I'll probably cry if he goes 😭

We, Aston Villa will go on. I understand that but  how can people be so relaxed about this. He is the most exciting player us fans have ever seen. Not only is he talented, he is one of us. Our academy. He is becoming a global super star, commercially he is not just a world class footballer.

He is a Villa Fan but he is also a professional footballer. He owes us nothing.

God I'm going to be so sad this weekend.

    I feel like this too..

Yeah I’ve been thinking of this recently and more so with the Totti documentary and series that have been released…

It’s rare to become such a symbol and genuine legend, especially nowadays, it’s almost a unique thing. To earn the admiration, adoration and respect of so many and be so closely linked to a club… it’s quite historic and won’t be forgotten.

What a story  and career to look back on…

It holds massive appeal and Jack needs to reflect on that…

I hope he’s watched the Totti documentary

  10.  My theory is (sorry if this has already been said) that ESR has been earmarked by Villa as Jack’s replacement, and we’re showing our intent just in case Jack does move on this summer, however, Villa are actually pretty sure that Jack will stay on hence the mid market offers..

If Jack stays this year but moves on next summer, we have built a relationship with ESR already, shown him we’re not messing about and if we’re 100mil richer and saving £150k a week in wages due to Jack’s move, then we’ll be in prime position to offer Arse a decent amount and ESR a massive wage and he may well help push the move through.

So the offers have a two fold effect, one we may entice him this year regardless of Jack’s circumstances, and two we have built a rapport and trust with ESR and his representatives ready for next year.

I can absolutely see JWP wanting to move on from Southampton and this ultimately, may force Saints hand. Think about it, Southampton's owners aren't interested, they will likely be happy just staying in the league next season and the likes of Ings/Bertrand are leaving or have left. Where's the ambition?

Without researching, I'd hazard a guess that JWP was the only Saints player in an England squad that has 3 Villa players, including Englands best player. He might be thinking that his best shot at going to a World Cup or winning a trophy or playing in Europe would be at a team like Villa. He's probably not quite at the level of a top 4 side so a Villa/Everton type would be his best crack at 'the big time'. There is also Matt Targett. I believe they are quite close and came through the ranks together and look how well Targett has done at Villa. It won't go unnoticed that he's just won our POTS and is improving under our coaching.

We'd also be able to offer him a more lucrative contract.

If Southampton are ready to listen to a sensible offer, I can see this having legs.

I know a very well connected Saints fan and this fits in with his view point. He thinks it is a real link.
