Sky doing their very best to take the jam out of my doughnut here. Disrespectful bunch of clearings in the woods.

New narrative will now be that no-one else wanted him and he is now a bit rubbish

Already hating it....adding why would he want to join the villa...championship three years ago.

    1. Most of the league have a had a stint in the championship

    2. Unless you are city liverpool or Chelsea everyone else is just making the numbers.

    3. We are actually a big club...bigger than some of the clubs who have been given big club status.

I've switched it off already 😡😀

First player I would upgrade after finding a class DM.

    Me too.

Not good enough for where we want to be.

Played in poor Southampton team and Fulham team...not going to improve.

Poor positioning sense...and it kills us...allows to many crosses amd space to be attacked by wingers.

Cash and Targett are both ok. They have good and poor elements to their game. They are being asked to play an important role in the team and both are doing their best. Neither are good enough for a top 6 team yet and I suspect neither of them ever will be. They do a job for us now and will probably be replaced by this time next year. In the meantime they will continue to be ok.

The thing is then poor elements are in defending which they should be good at.

I could argue crossing should be not as good but both suffered in basic defending...the main one positioning.

Every team we play stick 5 in the middle and exploit the space we give them...better positioning by cash and that first pass by Chelsea is back...not forward amd thus resulting in a rash tackle

Needs to stop drifting centrally when defending.

Spot on....been saying this for two years....last year he had grealish in front of him so that took a couple of players away from him.

If you look back at most of our goals conceded....they come from the wings...not necessarily crosses....but allowing the oppo wingers free time and space to run in to the box.

IMO I dont think he is good enough...played in a poor Southampton team...then Fulham....better than Taylor...yes...but a new LB would be high on my list after a CDM

  5. Im sorry but who are Villa, a team in its third year back in the prem, survived by skin of our teeth, last year.....played for 18 games.

I think a few need to really think about what they saying, turning their nose ups at some of the names mentioned, I'm sorry, but we are not as big as we think we are, its alright having money and a nice ground, it doesnt mean anything.

Its shame it didn't workout for Smith, but please, look at his record, its poor, reliant on Grealish and a pot of money, no plan A or B.  But, he has been let down by some players, simple basics he cannot effect.

Its also been a funny summer so you could argue this season was always going to be difficult.

Either way, its a new chapter and must back the new manager regardless of who it is.

At the end of the day we're only behind due to a freak goal.

But that's only half of the story.  We've been absolutely battered.

I'm so sick of our totally non existent midfield. They're not defending and they're not attacking.  Southampton are pouring through our lines, they're dominating the edge of the box, they're just waiting for the next thunderbolt from just outside the edge of the box after a layoff.

Our defence are last ditch on everything, but when they do win the ball they've got no options on so it's a hopeful punt over the midfield heads which is immediately won back by Southampton (or as its been all season whoever we're playing) who head or launch it back and win every second ball because midfield are again nowhere.

Occasionally Bailey gets the ball out wide and there is no one anywhere.

We look like we're playing with 6 me.  It almost looks impossible for them to be so nowhere.

Apart from the hoof from ward prowse there's nothing freak about that the goal.

Maybe if our players moved...gambled on 2nd balls and had a bit of quality they would score a few freak goals.

Armstrong made that goal work for him.

Our defence has gone to shite. Some claim Smith has improved Ming's and Hause?  So why are they as inconsistent as the day they walked through our door, you can include Targett in that too!

I wouldn't say they have gone to shite, they were never really that good, last year they still made the same mistakes, same style of play, same bad positioning, only difference this year is Martinez is not bang on it keeping the ball out the net.

you could see him say "i didnt/couldnt see it" to some Villa players after it went in.

If you watch it back, there were 3 Villa players in or around Rice creating almost a wall between Rice and Martinez, granted Martinez should have probably saved it, but you can see him say "i didnt/could see it", the more worrying thing for me is we had 3 players in front of Rice and nobody went out to him or got a block/tackle in, i dont want to sound like a stuck record, but its a perfect example of teams walking through us, and us being passive/ineffective at stopping teams playing or just walking through us.

Can definitely see why he couldn't see through the traffic.

But this also highlights a major concern for me thats been happening foe a while...look at that shape.

7 players in front of ball all out of position...Ive said before Target plays Centre Half and here the proof....bit off topic

Trying to see anything through this mess is always going to hard.

I don't want to piss on your bonfire but what that doesn't tell you is the areas from where shots are being taken. I think you were sort of making that point anyway. Teams are walking through us this year compared to last season when we sat slightly deeper. I think it's harsh on Martinez tbh. I think we also had more speculative efforts against us last season. From distance. At least in my head it appears that way. I could be wrong though????

Teams were walking through us last year, but as the stats say Martinez was better, there have definitely been some goals conceded where you think, he would have saved that last year.

We sit back so bad its shocking, I have lost count on how many villa players are in the box when we concede.....Rice's goal last night, clear example, 7 inc the keeper and he didnt hit it that far out, we have centre half's in the 6 yard box...midfielders on the edge...this kills us as well as the second ball retention.....even more so...going forward...the only thing is to hoof it to watkins....lose it...repeat

I’m starting to worry that last season we just massively over achieved for 4 months and the reality is our players are just not that good and the recruitment hasn’t been as great as we all thought it was.

    Said this many times.

I'm all for dipping in to the championship for players, but when you have a team full of them which player already in the squad is going to make them better....no of them....additionally....how are they expected to compete in the prem.....they wont....we have too many players effectively 'learning their trade'

Need balance of good premiership players, experience.  Even those with prem experience are not good enough take Targett...played in a poor Southampton side....fulham....is he really going to improve us ...no...this can be said for many of our current squad.

The recruitment......the tactical awareness of Smith......the quality of players we have.....the loss of grealish   = what we have seen this calendar year and before.

Smith did get us promoted but so would any manager with the money spent and grealish.

He is a likeable guy...a fan...and i thank him for what he has done...but those asking for more time...he deserves it....so far during these past 11 months what have seen to show you that...next game...he can motivate the team and get a result....im intrigued to know.

We are very very poor at standing off the opposition and allowing them to run and shoot around the edge of the box. Obviously Targett first goal a classic example today. It's no good looking miffed that they've scored when you literally haven't defended at all. I just want players to put a proper tackle in very quickly or at the very least harass and harry and make actual physical contact! Matt was brilliant last season but he's a nightmare when he loses confidence in his ability.

spot on...been saying this for a while....both full backs do this but at least cash as a bit of pace to get out...eventually.

He's positional sense is poor.....starts at centre back.

As for blaming Baily....maybe if target was set right before.... it would have forced the player to play it backwards...bit like when we get the ball in the final third...we are always forced back.

    Poor player.....never rated him

I'd definitely agree that we don't have enough true midfielders - the defining moment of our season so far is missing out on Ward-Prowse who is exactly what we're missing.

I'm not sure I understand your formation though with 4 plus 1 - the four would be Luiz, McGinn, Ramsey and Nakamba?

Ward prowse is definitely a player that would fit in nicely

4 plus 1 would be a a traditional 4 in the middle and no10 say...but the two in the middle would have to be very disciplined if the other two were 'wingers'

But do we have the personal to play that...not sure

I'm not sure what you're proposing here - three is the most we can sensibly get into the middle I'd have thought.

    I guess we could play:

    --------------------------Martinez-------------------------

    Cash---------Konsa-----------Ings--------Targett

    -----------------------------Luiz------------------------------

    ------------McGinn----Ramsey----Sanson-------

    ---------------Ings-----------------------Watkins-------

But I can't see where the width would come from - I guess we could play Buendia over Ings in that formation and ask him and Watkins to play wider - with the middle three making runs into the box.

I think one of our problems yesterday was that with McGinn, Luiz and Buendia as three - Buendia's natural instinct to play as a support forward means that very often we're only left with two in there - I think one of our problems in 5-3-2 is the idea that we can play Buendia as a central midfielder.

There are a couple of players that are suffering - the strikers because they don't play well as a pair, Buendia because he's expected to be doing defensive work and then McGinn and Luiz who have too much ground to cover without a third man in there.

In a 5-3-2 like yesterday's we'd be better balanced with Nakamba playing ahead of Buendia and McGinn playing as a midfielder with licence to get forward and join in, rather than Buendia playing as a forward who is expected to help out in midfield.

I'm saying for us with the players we have...we need to play 5...now the question is do we go with a 3 and 2 out and out wingers or 4 plus 1.

I think we have too many like for.like players in forward positions....mainly wingers.

We don't have many midfielders...out an out midfielders and that could be our downfall. Off top of my head

                      Martinez

    Cash   konsa mings target

                Luiz     sanson

    Bailey       mcginn      watkins

                        Ings

The other problem is shoe Horning in ings and Watkins.  If playing two one needs to play wide and give us that width
