Surprised that (26 y.o. Argentinian international) Montiel has agreed to join Forrest for £9.4m. We were linked with him as competition for Cash, seemed a very good option and has a Monchi connection

Also surprised that Adams joins Bournemouth after his move to Chelsea collapsed after we have allegedly made him an offer.

The Monchi connection is likely the reason we’re not interested. Monchi will know him better than Forest’s scouting team and he’s happy to pass on him. He’s obviously not what we need.

Emery or Monchi having signed or worked with a player previously also means they’ll know if he’s not good enough.

Long article about him in the Athletic...select quote here...

    https://theathletic.com/4783519/2023/08/18/nicolo-zaniolo-a-game-changing-talent-but-consistency-remains-elusive/

Sounds like he's more of a carrier than a passer...so not really a Buendia-type player.

That said...if he creates lots of chances but is wasteful with them...that means Delphinho will have someone to be frustrated with in Buendia's absence. 🙂

From the McGinn comments about how he’s changed his game under Emery, carrying the ball is a big part of the way he plays. McGinn said in Scotland he was brought up to get the ball and immediately look to pass, whereas Emery wants him to get the ball and carry it up the pitch.

Zaniolo replacing Buendia gives us an opportunity to bring in a carrier over a passer.

He has had two and half seasons on loan in the Championship and half a season in the Belgian League.  I guess we should send Luiz back to City then, he had less experience and also had a buy back clause.

Buy clause involving Man City isn't really an issue as their threshold is so high in terms of meeting their quality - they didn't consider Luiz to be worth buying back when it was clear he was developing into a top PL midfielder.

Am pretty sure the Douglas Luiz buy back clause was structured so that City couldn't just buy him back and immediately flog him for double the money.

If Digne goes then an easy and fairly obvious player to go for is Borna Sosa at Stuttgart.

As for right back Wan Bissaka has been staring us in the face all summer.

Wan Bissaka would hardly be straight forward. He started for United last night - he's still in demand there. Their only other RB is Dalot - AWB would probably be ahead of him so he'd be their No.1 RB.

  5. There’s obviously a big budget there - Emery and Monchi haven’t come here just to search through the loan lists. Emery turned down NUFC and look at their spending. You’d love to know what’s going on behind the scenes. Guess we’ll find out over next couple of weeks.

  6. Loans for Harrison and zaniolo means we’re surely maxed out with FFP. How Chelsea are able to spend like they’ve done since Boehly arrived whilst we’re doing loan deals is definitely not financial fair play.

  7. Pau and Diaby are elite level signings. We need similar level at RB and up front. Cash and Watkins are (very) good but we needed better from them against a team that ran us ragged today.  I’m not sure if it’s possible to get elite level in those two positions in this window though.

Well, everyone now knows what Liverpool has to spend. It's about to get super fun.

And how desperate Klopp is for a CM. If Liverpool don't get him whoever they turn to as option B both club and player will be able to absolutely take them to the cleaners.

    Links that could still happen:

Zaniolo, Doku, Chiesa, Goncalves, F Torres, Cellabos, Montiel, Fresneda

    Links that won’t happen:

    Felix, Kessie, Adams

Other than F Torres, there is not many striker links there, and if Archer goes out it increasingly looks like we need one.

It also occurs to me that we were looking and supposedly offered on Doku aswell as Diaby, so that’s a position we were looking to fill, similarly Goncalves, Adam’s and Felix, none of which are yet filled.

All points to one or two players still being needed and possibly looking for the market to fall into place before we close deals. If Archer goes out that’s possibly one other too?

I don’t think you can write of joao felix coming to villa. We’ve previously tried to sign him so we know Emery wants him. Athletico has made it clear they want rid and nobody else has made an offer for him. I’d say the longer things continue like this the more likely he’ll see us as his best option.

We should test the waters for Emile Smith-Rowe again.

Don't care what Arteta says he is gonna get virtually no game time in the league this season, am sure he could be tempted here now to boost his international prospects etc.

This would be a great shout - He'll not be happy that Arteta's just dropped £60m on Kai Havertz so would surely be up for a move. I wonder how he and Emery got on when Emery was at Arsenal. He seems to have sent him out on loan during his time there.

One mistake and Maguire will fall apart. And it will happen.

Ward Prowse is a solid player but he’s a ‘doing enough to avoid relegation’ type signing. Ward Prowse, Alvarez and McTominay. Villa and Newcastle won’t be looking at that and thinking, ‘we need to watch out for West Ham this season’.

Theyre just such obvious Moyes signings. If Sheff Utd and Luton weren’t such staunch favourites for relegation, I’d be worried as a West Ham/Palace/Wolves fan.

Yeah they're wasting their £100m way more than we or Spurs did with ours. They should've parted company with Moyes after they won the EC and got a decent Sporting Director/Coach combination to invest that money properly. Moyes will be gone before Christmas and they'll have an ageing squad on huge long term contracts.

I fully acknowledge the ridiculous, emoji worthy idiocy of what I am about to say, but Andy Bernstein on his Talk Sport show this afternoon was saying that United are looking for another "well known striker" this window, in addition to Hojlund.

He said he couldn't name the player, but showed Darren Bent, his co-host, what he had written down and Bent couldn't believe it. I hope I am wrong and almost certainly am, but stranger things have happened. Couldn't be Ollie, could it?

He would be a superb signing for United and would make complete sense on and off the pitch. Thankfully there isn’t the brains at Man United to realise this - therefore I reckon it’s total BS.

  13. We’ve struggled badly with the first game of the season ever since we came back up. We’ve lost three of the last four - it was ridiculous how unprepared the team was against Bournemouth last season (and Watford under smith for that matter). Going to be a nervy one as both teams have high hopes going into this season and a defeat would be sore. Reckon we’ll play out a tentative draw.
