Pope sadly making a much better job of that headed clearance than he did against Liverpool
-
We were a bit flat and autopilot against Leicester and Forest but fair play he's got them up for this one unbelievably. I guess a full week of rest helps
Just got to hope no injuries as we're so thin

One day a team will keep a clean sheet against Emery's Villa. But not today

Positive goal difference, Traore apparently committed to repeatedly scoring variants of the same goal, Watkins a machine
Moreno not his best game for us but unlucky not to get an assist for Buendia, Ramsay not quite at it either but showed v good composure to switch it back to Watkins at the exact right time
Emery just doing the tiiiiniest little smile as he storms off down the tunnel
Voting Ashley Young for MOTM for not collapsing into dust and gently drifting away on the breeze
(also he was very composed and had no problems at all)
Think that's three games in a row now we've had at least one corner/goal kick decision go wrongly against us

First time in 6th in 10 years or so? Anyone knows?
We were briefly top 3 in Smith's winning run at the start of our second season back in PL but only very early on

Bert just gonna score increasingly scrappy versions of the Leicester goal until it's being deflected in off his foot on the goal line
-
We're hopefully not likely to concede five like the last time we played them at home.
An early goal via a set piece or a bit of freakish luck/skill would certainly set the tone

I've got nothing against Leicester, was happy enough that they won the league and the FA cup, but it is deeply amusing to me how miserable that last 15 minutes was for their fans
God, remember when they beat us 4-0 just before COVID hit and literally nobody would have said we had a chance of staying up

Was about to say I was worried that Bert with short hair isn't Bert, no air of carefree eccentricity radiating off him, and then he does what Bert does

Yes, it's almost as if... JJ doesn't exist

Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall, with your name like a a retrospectively disgraced Victorian industrialist who has a lot of statues of him taken down

we might now finally be clear of commentators saying Villa can now "perhaps start looking up the table rather than over their shoulder at the teams below them" , after every single win

Voted McGinn MOTM but that was Moreno's best game for us too.
Scott Murray on the Graun liveblog enjoyed it, this is quite heartwarming:
That’s pretty much put paid to any lingering hopes of Chelsea making a late run for the top four. In fact, any sort of European football next season is beginning to look unlikely for the Blues. But this should be about Aston Villa, who scored a couple of fine goals, could easily have had more, dug deep defensively when they had to, kept Chelsea at arm’s length for much of that second half, and saw the game out professionally. European football next year doesn’t seem so much of a stretch for them, who have now taken 13 of the last 15 points on offer in the Premier League. They’re going places under Unai Emery, and all of a sudden, next season becomes a whole world of possibility. (Not least because they’ll be wearing that new 1981-infused badge. Delicious.)- 6

Someone who sounded like Robbie Earle was on the vo at half time saying it was a soft penalty
Tony Gale has that Carragher thing where he spends the entire game animatedly armchair managing what he thinks his former club should do to win as if they're the protagonists of the story, its very tiresome

Enh. This isn't bad so far. The penalty was shit and we're weak defending corners which they're exploiting, but we're OK going forward and the possession game has got their crowd silent and nervous a lot of the time.
Hopefully Benrahama gets shushed himself in the second half
-
Moreno makes the game look so simple when he's attacking, just makes sudden good runs or finds a bit of space for a dangerous ball into the box
-
Pathetic decision
-
Excellent from both, after Moreno had struggled a bit down the left in the early stages. Nice to see us weather all the crosses West Ham put in and then score from one at the other end immediately

That might have been the worst win I have seen this season but I don't care at all
Definitely the least enjoyable of Emery's reign, the only worse one I can recall for entertainment value this season was the 1-0 win-by-default against a functionally non-existent Southampton under the previous manager
I guess it would've been better for everyone if Anderson had missed the ball and Watkins had got a tap-in so we'd at least have had a good goal and the 6 in 6 to think about
-
They also said Cash "ran onto a long ball" and for the goal which is a little uncharitable, but they don't have a lot of time to observe and write this stuff tbf
I think their point in the screen cap is more that we're much further clear of it despite it only being two places, it's condensed down the bottom and then 11th up is like a separate league at the moment
-
Fortuitous but couple of good dangerous passes in there. Hopefully it opens up a bit now
-
This and Bournemouth are the two games I'm most keen to see strong performances in after the disastrous away fixtures
You know things are bad if Palace fans are chanting "eez jast too good for yew" about your complete inability to deal with Wilf Zaha ffs

They pressure the officials, clever imo. Real struggle today and Watkins and having quality on the bench made the difference. We looked so disjointed, kept giving way possession time after time and losing 50/50's as well.
It didn't do them much good though, the ref was favouring us in the first half. I don't know if it becomes a boy who cried wolf thing where he hears them screaming blue murder about them not getting a corner they should have had and just thinks yeah that's what you always say pipe down lads
They've definitely hallucinated a great many handballs over the years

Newcastle have forced the ref to let things go with how aggressive they've been, and then they're mad when it goes against them
