  1. I agree that the bottom 5 are equally shite.

Not so sure about the manager point. Watford were dead and buried before Pearson was appointed and he may well keep them up. West Ham were right to change managers, it was appointing Moyes that was inexplicable.

  2. King Edwards Aston - solidly Villa when I went there. We used to play Villa v the rest and still outnumber the noses and glory hunters.

As for moving the ground if you think the people of somewhere like Sutton are going to put up with the disruption of having thousands of people descend on your area once a fortnight then you’re living in dream world. Maybe we should do a Reading and move to some soulless industrial estate on the edge of town,

Aston is far from desirable but then again neither is Anfield, Walton and lots of other areas where traditional grounds are located. The locals in Aston are a lot more accommodating than I would be if I lived near a football ground.

  3. I was across the road from the Green when the bus came passed and it wasn’t one or two bottles - it was loads. I had to move pretty sharpish to avoid the cans and bottles which were coming over the coach into the Villa fans on the other side of the road.

It was pretty intense where I was and so can only imagine what it was like on the coach.

My thoughts are it won't be Dean smith, to risky, we need promotion. I''m sure Mendes is involved, so it will be someone from the continent with a view to promote us this season, bringing in players January to make sure its done.

As if the likes of Henry or Faria wouldn’t have been massive risks. Every managerial appointment is a risk. Of the names that have been prominently linked to the role Dean Smith is probably the least risky after Brendan Rodgers.

I was watching MOTD last night and the array of talent and the style of play that these teams had.

    Teams like Watford, Palace, Bournemouth.

Teams you would consider to be average at that level looking miles ahead from where we are.

If Bruce managed to get us promoted.

I would dread to think how we would look as a premier league team.

We’d spend a lot of money on better players and compete with the teams mentioned just like every other team that has been promoted in the last couple of seasons.

  6. There were always going to be unexpected results before the end of the season- unfortunately it was us on the receiving end of one.

2nd place is not definitely gone - Cardiff still have some tough games to come and we are still ahead of Fulham - but the margin for error from now on in is pretty much zero. Hopefully win the next 3 games which we are more than capable of and see where we are then.

Lets see where we finish shall we.

A quick check back of this thread in August and I see you had us finishing no higher than 10th so hopefully your forecasting skills are still as perceptive.

  8. Derby and Fulham have recent experience of choking in play off games so there’s no reason to believe that we are somehow inherently weaker than these teams if we do end up in the playoffs.

Still reckon we’ll go up automatically so should all be academic in any event.

  9. He’s very much a work in progress but there’s lots to be positive about. With Keenan playing we’re a much better balanced team and it’s no surprise that since he came into the team our midfielders have started to contribute a lot more goals. The goals will come in time.

  10. With so many of the teams immediately around us playing  each other tonight whatever the outcome results were going to go against us. I think I’ll wait till after we’ve played before joining in with all the wailing going on here tonight.

  11. Zero hours contracts are a relatively new concept. If an employer was truly happy for someone to choose as and when they wanted to work then that person could work on a casual basis.  Fixed term contracts simply tie workers into employers with no obligations on the part of the employer.  If this was truly about choice then give employees the choice of whether they want to work on a zero hours basis. If they don't then they should be guaranteed a number of hours work.

The main thing to be aware of is the Neanderthals in blue shirts, they're an unsavoury bunch, prone to spitting and shouting loudly about the vile.

The good news is there'll probably only be around 150 of them. Benefit day isn't until next week.

Amazingly they've shifted  3,000 tickets for the Fulham game which is probably more than they've sold in the last 5 away games.

  13. Are none of you super confident guys not at least a bit worried? Considering everything that can have gone against us has so far, surely I am not the only one feeling a little less comfortable this afternoon?

Until we're mathematically safe I doubt there isn't anyone who isn't a bit worried but I think we'll be fine because I just can't see Wigan beating Arsenal. The way I see it is if we do go down I'll be as disappointed as any villa fan but at least I won't have spent the last week or so driving myself into a frenzy of worry.

  14. Leaving aside the fact there are 3 or 4 other teams who are also in the mix I can't see why so many are on convinced that this means Wigan will beat Arsenal. I can't see Arsenal being as lethargic as CIty were today, and if there was any complaceny then today would have been the perfect warning. Much rather City taken Wigan for granted than Arsenal. Hopefully they'll spend the next couple of days celebrating hard.

  15. Wigan have a better GD.

Wigan have a game in hand.

Wigan have form in relegation dogfights.

Wigan are at home to us last game.

Wigan have already tonked us once 3-0, should of been 6.

All of the above = welcome Championship.

It's like an article of faith on Villa sites that Wigan will go on a strong run and that they will beat us on the final day of the season.

Wigan are a latter day Coventry and they will get their comeuppance this season. I don't see why losing 2 games in a row and before that barely scraping a draw against 10 men QPR makes them so much more likely than us to stay up. Throw in fixture congestion I'm confident we'll stay up ahead of them even if comes down to the final game.m

  16. Southampton and sunderland looking like smart decisions to replace managers.

I hope we don't regret our decision to stick with Lambert.

Didn't do too much for QPR or Reading and I would say Southampton were looking fine before they sacked Atkins. Will give you Di Canio turning round Sunderland but it was only a year ago that MON was doing the same thing.

If we were going to sack Lambert it would have been after the Bradford/Millwall debacle week and we've done ok since then so not sure that we'd been any better off with a new manager.

  17. I wonder if he has already done that. and come to the conclusion the relegation is better than hurling excess wages at players.

loss of sky money v Lower overheads

maybe he has gotten a different answer to us who think the sky money runs the club

I can't see how he could conclude that it would cost less to be relegated. There would be a massive reduction in income that would require even more cost cutting that would make it even less likely we would come back at the first attempt which will make it near impossible for him to recover anything near the amount he has put into the club. I'm sure Randy is sick of spending money but if he wants to protect his investment then he's going to have to find at least £10m in the next couple of weeks. He'll get a lot more trying to flog a middling PL team than a middling championship team.

  18. Correct. I won't be. My opinions haven't changed over the latest report.

I still don't know what's been gained. Everyone knew it was a **** up, everyone knew more could have been saved if it wasn't for shit policing and misjudgements, etc.. But the Taylor Report already addressed these issues.

I still don't see what the JFT96 Campaign was about.

They can now say 'See? - we were right! We were right!'.

Worth the time effort and expense?

I'm not sure the world will wake up tomorrow any differently.

Really strange those people who would like to know the truth about what really happened to their loved ones. I'm sure your view would be very different if you were one of the people who had been affected.

Taylor didn't address issues such as whether there was more that could have been done to save lives, the systematic attempt by the police to cover up their failings etc. That's why people are still campaigning after all this time.

I can't stand much of the mythology that surrounds Liverpool Football Club (as they seemingly have to be referred to) but on this one JTF96 have been spot on and good luck to them.

  19. I still find it extremely worrying that under O'Neill when finishing sixth three times on the bounce we had the 8th, 6th and 6th highest wage bill but couldn't sustain it. We are going to find it very difficult to get back into the top 6 and stay there unless we are prepared to again have a wage bill that reflects that position.

It is Lerners biggest failure that he could not get income up to a level that could sustain finishing 6th with the 6th highest wage bill

Isn't it the case that we are generating more commercial income than we have at any other previous time.

The fact is that we don't have the same fan base as the teams in the top 6, which is why our turnover is much less than the teams we are seeking to challenge.
