  1. Texas Governor has introduced some new executive orders regarding guns following the recent shootings: You can now carry a gun in more places. This will lead to more good guys with guns in more places.

Texas Governor Greg Abbott issued eight executive orders Thursday that aim to stop potential mass shooters by strengthening reporting techniques, although he conceded in a release that "legislative action" is still needed. Abbott's orders come as the Lone Star State reels from two mass shootings in August that left 29 people dead.

"Texas must achieve several objectives to better protect our communities and our residents from mass shootings" Abbott said in a statement. "One of those objectives is to marshal law enforcement resources to stop violent criminals before they commit mass murders. But more must be done. I will continue to work expeditiously with the legislature on laws to keep guns out of the hands of dangerous criminals, while safeguarding the 2nd Amendment rights of law-abiding Texans."

The laws that took effect Sunday will:

    • Allow licensed handgun owners to carry weapons in places of worship, including churches and synagogues.
    • Ban landlords and homeowners from prohibiting tenants to own, carry and transport guns on their property.
    • Prevent school districts from prohibiting licensed gun owners — including school employees — from storing guns and ammunition in school parking lots as long as it is not in plain view.
    • Allow foster homes to store firearms.
    • Prevent citizens for being charged for carrying a handgun without a license while evacuating or returning to a declared disaster zone.
    • Allow disaster shelters to take in evacuees who have guns.
    • Allow schools to have more armed marshals on campus.
    • Defend licensed gun owners who unknowingly enter designated gun-free zones as long as they leave after being told about the policy.
  2. Before it all happened in Midland/Odessa, I would have said, "Huh, no-one better try a mass shooting around there because they would be shot down pretty much straight away". Then all my Facebook posts are "STAY INDOORS!!! STAY INDOORS!!!" when it really did happen. So where were all the (civilian) good guys with guns? Probably indoors crapping themselves.

There's more than 1 gun per person in the US?  That's insane.

All my friends in Texas have at least 2 guns, usually nearer to 5 or 6. I didn't get one, but I was encouraged to get one for self-protection, it would have been easy to legally buy one too as a Legal Permanent Resident. I went target shooting at a local ranch with my mate, he brought a Smith & Wesson and a Glock for us to use. I really enjoyed it, I'd never fired a gun before. It's all so different out there, took a while to adjust.

  4. 20 people shot plus 6 killed in Midland/Odessa, where I used to live. All my friends are OK so far.  I used to frequent all the places where this madman went on his rampage across the 2 cities. I know you lot joke about thoughts and prayers, but I am thinking all my friends and the victims.

    What are you training as?

    Is it accredited?

That comes from some training I had in the USA, when I was working there, so it was part of the hospital training for working with mental health patients. It must have been accredited somewhere. I did my basic training years ago, now an Advanced Nurse Practitioner. I'm not a Mental Health Practitioner though.

Why my OH puts the clocks forward by 5 or so minutes "So I wont be late". Same in the car. My work starts at 7:00, if I get there when the car clock says 7:08 then I know I'm late so how does it change anything? Utterly bizarre.

If you're less than 5 minute early, you're late

Watching a program on Channel 5 last night which I think was a repeat called Me and My 10 Kids.

Its hard to break down exactly what pissed me off but its a combination of enabling people with some sort of metal disorder to keep having children, allowing borderline child abuse by clearly having some of the children neglected due to the sheer number of them and also denying the older children a proper childhood by roping them into becoming carers for the younger children and of course the massive burden on the state to pay for all of this. The one woman, a single mom no less, was doing the usual cliché moaning that her ridiculous incoming benefits package wasn't enough and barely fed her children, quite why she thinks she is entitled to any of this money despite not doing a days proper work herself at any point is anyone's guess.

Just a horrible situation all round really.

Watched a similar programme called 'Carers'. The older kids (8-10yrs or so) looking after the babies due to the parents having learning difficulties, and not being able to cope. I think there were upwards of 5 kids, can't remember. There were sleeping babies dotted around the ground floor in filth. The parents being interviewed was the most depressing.

Probably better suited to the job thread but it’s also my experience of mental health as a staff member in 2019.

I think I’m coming to the end of my time working in mental health. It’s ground me down over the last 12 years and a mix of nhs pressures, people abusing the services, lack of funding for MH, Tory gov’t dismantling and pretty much closing down every helpful community based service we once had has had its toll.

I work in a rehab and recovery centre that you wouldn’t even know was there as it’s residential based. Over the last 5 years we are getting more and more acutely unwell clients causing risk to other clients and us staff. The wards they would have gone to previously are either full or don’t exist anymore. We have regular round the clock observations now where we sit 24/7 with a patient due to their risk. That’s everything rehab and recovery shouldn’t be, our service should be getting people too well for acute wards and getting them ready for going back into the community but we are now an overspill car park for acute and worse.

The other effect it’s had in me is in a financial sense, the way the benefits system has been exploited just winds me up. I work full time for a living in a hard job and while I’m not existing month to month it’s still a struggle to save yet we have clients who because they have no outgoings other than cigarettes get to save up vast amounts of benefits, we have a client who has saved up nearly £70,000 in their time in services and go out every month spending thousands on designer goods and technology. No one does anything about it. They aren’t that unwell, could easily work and are abusing the system but because they know what to say and do to pull the wool over the eyes no one will challenge it. We had one person get a 2 bedroom absolutely beautiful apartment that would cost £800-1kpm for me, basically unreachable, they paid £100 and services/council picked up the tab for the rest. It’s insane.

Also, being around the mental health area for so long, it starts to affect how you view the world, it’s made me feel bleaker about things for sure. It’s definitely had a detrimental affect to my own MH over the years. Increased anxiety being enemy number one due to unrealistic pressures on staff. In an ideal world I’d be happy knowing I’m helping people recover but the way the NHS has gone we don’t do that anymore, we are now a holding pen. I need something that will make me happy and view the world more positively I think.

I don’t know, maybe I’m just in a rut and sounding off. There’s a boatload of idiots working for the NHS (and too many self serving psychopaths working in the positions of authority or that greatly affect how the NHS is run) but there are also a lot of absolute stars as well chugging away and it’s them and the genuinely unwell clients that keep me turning me up at present, underneath all the crap I do enjoy what my job actually is on paper but the problem is Im not and haven’t been getting to do my job properly for a long time now.

I know I’m definitely pissed off about the state of things and know that I need to get away from mental health for my own sanity ironically. I know that this post isn’t about struggling with illness but this is how mental health is affecting me and a big number of staff throughout the services at the moment. Move to the career thread if that’s more appropriate.

You sound like a good man Ingram85. There will be a whole host of people who have benefited immensely from the work you do and have done, as you know, you will never see it, but it is there. It's a long game MH, I couldn't do it. I share your view of the NHS psychopaths, scary people indeed.

Is Michael Jackson's music about to be filed away in the 'never play again' section along with Gary Glitter and R Kelly's?

It's difficult to separate the art from the artist but I still watch Woody Allen films despite his creepiness.

What about listening to The Who?

Anyone one on here watched his BBC expose?

Ye. Same old tit for tat, us vs them. I don't know why he bothered really, it's not like anyone takes Panorama or the BBC, or any media news seriously anyway.

    I enjoyed watching it though.

I reckon Bicks has loads of great stories, but he just alludes to certain events. Apart from taking a piss in Brian Epstein's house (and not in the toilet), which he told in great detail and with effervescent enthusiasm a while back. So come on Bicks, tell us some tales.

One problem we have in the world today is that the stupid are so sure of everything and the intelligent are uncertain about themselves.

This is pretty much a universal truth. Frustratingly sad, and I'm as guilty as the next person of this. Sometimes I catch myself being absolutely sure of something , take a step back, and realise how fundamentally wrong I am. Concrete thinking.
