  1. Well I've just qualified as an English teacher, so I'm bound to be biased! But seriously, unless you're considering doing Law at uni, I think you should do English. Is there any chance of doing combined language and literature? That's what I did at A Level and what unis and employers prefer, I believe. Just looks a bit better. My English A' Level has helped me a lot, both in my further education and subsequent employment.

They do offer a joint language and literature course, but I decided on language because a) I might need the spare space to re-take GCSE Maths if I fail to get a C and B) because it interested me more than literature.

Fair play mate. Those are both pretty good reasons. The only thing I'd say is that I've heard that some people can look at English Language with a bit of snobbery, and just plain old English is a little bit more respected. Shouldn't think it would matter too much though.

Whatever you choose, I'm sure it will work out for the best :).

  3. Just finished the His Dark Materials trilogy. I was a bit disappointed to be honest. I enjoyed the first two books and the first third of The Amber Spyglass, but the last part bored me to tears and was a chore to read. There's no doubt that it was brilliantly written and Pullman has a phenomenal imagination and intellect, but I felt that after all the build-up, the story sadly just fizzled out.

There's no way that they're children's books though!

  4. I voted for BFR, but it was a very selfish vote. I voted them purely because I wasn't born for the 82 success, so while it would be brilliant to listen to those guys speak about it etc, it's ntohing I could really relate to.

However, BFR and Deano would talk about an era that I remember fondly. I only became a Villa fan around the time Ron took over so I personally would find it more interesting to listen to those two.

Exactly the same here, even down to when I became a Villa fan. Big Ron is a legend.

Yeah but would you pay to see him? Say, £40 with 3 course meal at Villa park?

No I wouldn't, but then I don't think that there's anybody who I'd necessarily pay money to hear give an after dinner speech and that sort of event isn't really my cup of tea. But I know for a fact that there would be an awful lot of people out there who would. Particularly if you chose Ron. I think he would be by far the more entertaining option of the two.

  6. Yes.

It's in everybody's best interests now.

If Villa insist Barry is worth £18m, Liverpool have the right to insist Finnan is worth £2m. In fact, I think that's pretty generous.

You can dispute it if you like but I reckon £16m + Finnan matches Villa's valuation or is at least close enough to stop pissing about and get the deal done.

Who's pissing about? It's not us. We've got our valuation and we're sticking to it. Liverpool knows the price. All they've had to do is pay it.

Finnan is a quality player, but his best days are behind him and he's knocking on a bit now so I'd say that he's worth £1.5m max.

  7. No. We should have no further communication with Liverpool unless they offer us £18m or £17m plus Finnan.

Although I have to say that I'm still of the (perhaps controversial and definitely unrealistic) opinion that we should point blank refuse to sell to those scum bags. I don't want them strengthened.

  8. I just know in the run up to the penalty Terry was thinking of lifting the trophy and that makes his miss sooooo sweet, if he really wanted to take a pen for the team he would have taken the first, not the one to win!

    Cocky thug!

I'd say it shows bottle more than anything. Going up to take a make or break penalty ahead of the Essien, Anelka etc etc.

    Fair play to him.

    Agreed!

  9. They have (sort of) explained the numbers. Or at least said where they came from and why they were printed on things on the island. It was something called the Valenzetti Equation which is named after the mathematician that discovered it. The numbers are basically a set of variables which count down to the end of the world. Experimenting into how to change these numbers was one of the main reasons for the Dharma Initiative being on the island. There are videos and stuff about it on www.lostpedia.com.

  10. I'm fairly certain they know. They've posed so many mysteries that they could have got themselves in a complete and unresolvable mess if they didn't know where they were going. They also publicly stated that they planted massive clues in the first few episodes of season 1, so that when it does end, they be able to prove that they always knew what was going to happen.

I also remember see 'Charlie' on Jonathan Ross, but can't remember him saying it was being stretched out beyond the wishes of the writers. What I do recall is that he said that they have a definite ending in mind but how they get there is open to adjustment.

  11. Just another quick message of support for the price rises, General. We're still going to be getting incredible value for money, particularly with the constant improvement and development at the club. I'm just thinking where we'll be next year and it will all be worth it.

I can't remember if I've ever posted in this thread before, but if not, thank you so much for everything you and Randy have done for this club. Thinking about Villa just makes me happy now and we can finally hold our heads up high again. This season has given me some moments that I will never forget. It's an honour and a privilege to be directly addressing a man of your standing.

  12. In JJB in Cardiff they have a whole stand dedicated to the new Villa kit, complete with a picture of Barry, Gabby, Young, Maloney, Moore and Mellberg in front of the Bullring on top of it. They haven't got anything like that for Spurs. This would never have happened before and shows that our marketing is now reaching places it never would have before.

Thanks General. Really appreciate what you guys are doing for this club. I'm embarrassed about the moaning from some about trivial issues over which you clearly have no control. Your efforts have not gone unnoticed by the vast majority of Villa fans.

I for one am extremely grateful. You've given me so many (Villa-related!) shiver-down-the-spine moments already - I can't wait to see what's next.

  13. Has anyone seen the South Park where they absolutely OWN Family Guy!? It's the one where the Manatees are writing the Family Guy scripts by picking random idea balls in a tank. Sounds strange but you have to watch it to understand what I mean - I've never looked at Family Guy in the same light since. It was pure genius.

The best one ever though was 'Scott Tenorman Must Die'!!! (Cartman buys pubes from an older boy for $10 after being conned that you have to buy them, rather than grow them yourself).

The storyline and ending was probably one of the funniest things I've ever seen! It's infinitely funnier than ANY Simpsons/Family Guy that I've ever watched.

I was the same as other on here - I'd watched bits of one or two, but never really got it, but one day I watched a whole episode (think it was the 'Brown Noise') and just became hooked.

Yes! Each of those is a perfect example of how amazing South Park is. The movie is also stunning. Only Anchorman has made me laugh nearly as much.
