  1. Everyone on Radio 5 is being very polite, but I think what needs saying is that the Indians are a shifty bunch of gutless cheating ****.
Dhoni withdraws the appeal - Bell back in. Isn't that very sporting
  2. beeb"]Iraq less safe than a year ago: US watchdog

A top US adviser on Iraq has accused the US military of glossing over an upsurge in violence, just months before its troops are due to be withdrawn.

Iraq is more dangerous now than a year ago, said a report issued by the US Special Inspector General for Iraq Reconstruction, Stuart W Bowen Junior.

He said the killing of US soldiers and senior Iraqi figures, had risen, along with attacks in Baghdad .

The report contradicts usually upbeat assessments from the US military.

It comes as Washington is preparing to withdraw its remaining 47,000 troops from Iraq by the end of the year, despite fears that the Iraqi security forces might not be ready to take over fully.

"Iraq remains an extraordinarily dangerous place to work," Mr Bowen concluded in his quarterly report to Congress. "It is less safe, in my judgment, than 12 months ago."

The report cited the deaths of 15 US soldiers in June - the bloodiest month for the American military in two years - but also said more Iraqi officials had been assassinated in the past few months than in any other recent period.

While the efforts of Iraqi and American forces may have reduced the threat from the Sunni-based insurgency, Shia militias are believed to have become more active, it said.

They are being blamed for the deaths of American soldiers, and for an increase in rocket attacks on the Baghdad international zone and the US embassy compound.

Additionally, the report called the north-eastern province of Diyala, which borders Iran, "very unstable" with frequent bombings that bring double-digit death tolls.

Mr Bowen accused the US military of glossing over the instability, noting an army statement in late May that described Iraq's security trends as "very, very positive" - but only when compared to 2007, when the country was on the brink of civil war.

A spokesman for the US army in Iraq declined to respond.

  3. Isn't part of the problem that the West in general has lived beyond its means for many years and neither people or politicians have yet accepted that we may face a permanent reduction in living standards?
Politicians don't have to accept it - they don't face a permanent reduction in living standards.
  4. I'd bet as an average tories are more selfish than non-tories.

sorry but that's nearly as baffling a statement as when my Hungarian Nan said to my wife "How can Tony be a non believer (in God) when he's such a kind and good person "

you just can't measure something like that , you've fallen into Drat Ideology trap which is frankly (with respect) complete bollocks

    It's not their fault

  5. Why does the UK government now recognize the National Transitional Council as the Libyan government?

Hague reportedly said around March's meeting, "We recognize states rather than groups within states."

"Mr Hague, having said that we recognize states not groups, are you not doing this?"

"This is a 'unique' situation and we now view that group as the state so we are recognizing it as that."

    Or words to that effect,

Fine, expel the representatives of the Ghaddafi regime (should have probably done it much earlier) but recognizing the NTC just so you can free up assets for them to have? I think it's extremely difficult (even more than it was before) to argue that this wasn't about taking sides in a civil war from the very beginning.

    Because hilary told them to.

Disgraceful decision. Hilary justified it because the assets shouldn't be held by gadaffi - fair enough they're frozen, release them when a new govt is elected. She then spouted that the rebels were the democratic face of the people. Must have missed that election.

So now the rebels have in theory access to billions of petrodollars - what will they do with them? Buy weapons? Who from? Yes their friendly NATO allies. Corrupt as feck.

But I suppose the tories never claimed to have ethical foreign policies.

  6. Psychological projection or projection bias is a psychological defense mechanism where a person subconsciously denies his or her own attributes, thoughts, and emotions, which are then ascribed to the outside world, usually to other people. Thus, projection involves imagining or projecting the belief that others originate those feelings.
  7. Well they are likely busy removing all the Al Queda references.

To me though, he is a Christian as he considers himself "100% Christian".

Just because he is capable of trusting science doesn´t make him an atheist.

He may not be protestant, catholic or fundamentalist (whatever that means), but still a Christian.

Sounds like he's more 'ethnic north european' than anything...

Breivik writes in his manifesto that he is not religious, has doubts about God's existence, does not pray, but does assert the primacy of Europe's "Christian culture" as well as his own pagan Nordic culture.
  8. There was internet talk/babble of a second shooter on the island; and the logistics of the operation - from the bomb in oslo to get to the island with a load of ammo and explosives, would appear challenging for an untrained lone operative.

He's saying he was acting alone - so maybe it's a case of round up the usual suspects?

To be fair there was talk that he actually had some training, I remember there being some talk yesterday he'd had some military experience. Which could explain why he was quite so ruthless with the firearms....

There was indeed, but I thought (that I read somewhere that) the norwegian authorities said that he had been exempted from national service. (though can't find any links due to internet being full of repeat reports)

Doesn't take much skill to fire a rifle and kill someone at point blank range...........
But to go round shooting 80 odd takes a little bit of skill and a lot of mental preparation.

  10. SlyNews"]Police have arrested six more people following an armed raid launched in connection with the Norway twin attacks, Sky sources say.

Officers from the police's counter-terrorism force, known as Delta, swooped on a property in the east of Oslo earlier today.

Sky can reveal that police are trying to access two chemical containers at the address.

Police confirmed the operation but would not give further details or comment whether there were any arrests.
