  1. Perhaps it was just a stressful day because he was trying to persuade Middlesbrough to let him go and is worried his big chance in the Prem could slip away as the window is only open for 3 more days?

  2. We didn't bid enough? Well there's a surprise.

    Still "We tried"......

oh dear, i assume you must be a brilliant businessman.

Something I have in common with our owner. Difference is the little money I have I didn't get off daddy.

If you want to keep falling for the spin and PR then go for it. It's quite clear that the club called in their mates in the press to help them out after Saturday. And these 'two quality signings'? A rejected bid for someone in the Belgium league and another player from the lower leagues which would still bring our spending to lower than last season.

You never accept the first bid thats just basic, we would probably have never expected the first bid to be accepted. Stop **** moaning.

    OMG...

we had 6 bids rejected for Nzogbia last summer, we had 3 bids for Bent rejected and lately we had 2 bids for Lowton rejected!!!!

it's what business is all about! have you never gone to a car boot and haggle the price??

  4. Okay... I was wrong.. haha. Thank god! YES PLEASE.

Belgian international striker Christian Benteke has emerged as a leading target for Villa as Paul Lambert looks to strengthen his squad before Friday’s transfer deadline.

2 for 1 Personal Cover with Green Flag

Villa’s scouts have watched Benteke in action several times and Lambert is believed to be pursuing a deal for the 21-year-old powerhouse who plays for Belgian top flight club Genk.

Benteke, who was born in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, has started the season with three goals and one assist in five games to lift Genk to sixth in the Jupiler Pro League table.

The former Standard Liege frontman, who is 6ft 3ins tall, found the net 18 times in 47 games in all competitions for Genk and Belgium under-21s last season.

Having progressed through the Belgian age-groups, he has been capped five times by the full national side and scored his first international goal in this month’s 4-2 friendly victory over Holland.

Villa are in the market for a strong frontman to boost their forward options and provide competition and support for Darren Bent, Gabby Agbonlahor, Andi Weimann and Nathan Delfouneso.

Since veteran targetman Emile Heskey was released at the end of his contract in the summer, the claret and blues have lacked a physical presence up front.

The situation with Benteke is far from a done deal, but Villa hope to step up negotiations with Genk today after a move for the player who has three years left on his contract.

  5. I'll be honest, the thing I hate about Villa is the fans. Yeah the players aren't great and overpaid and dont put a shift in, we dont have investment... but Its not that that I've got bored and annoyed with.

It's the fans, the certain posters and tweeters who cant be anything other than incessantly pissed off. Personal abuse of management, the constant Mc'InsertInsult' names last season - pathetic. Booing at HT of our first home game, Banners every-****-season wanting somebody out. I cant remember the last time in my life where we didnt want 'SOMEBODY out'.

People refusing to go to VP whilst McLeish was there and yet there were still 5k missing this week.

It's not every fan, a lot on here and on twitter are insightful, enjoy football and have some good points to make but the constant bitching and moaning and the incessant whinging is just tiresome and it's making me lose my love of the game.

Some people just seem to enjoy having something to moan about.

  6. If we could get £20m for him and buy 2 strikers from abroad, a winger, a midfielder and a left back with that £20m + whatever we can get for Warnock and Hutton, then fine, but I suspect we cant do so in the next 5 days. So he will be staying and we need to sort something out to create chances for him ASAP.

  7. Nzogbia was Plan A,B and C at Wigan and had an alright partnership with Rodallega thats why he got so many goals and assists there.

He doesn't pass, he doesn't cross. He always tries and takes on half of the opposition. In '09-'11 I'm also confident that he attempted more dribbles than any other player in the top 5 european leagues bar Lionel Messi. Except Nzogbia didnt complete hardly any of them as he is nowhere near as skilled and his head is always looking at his feet.

  8. i.e. The 'kids' are good enough individually to play in the Premier league, put one of them in Fulham's team, one in Norwich, one at Stoke's, one in our's etc etc, they'd get playing time, look like good prospects and maybe make a career at Premier League level.

Throw them all together and expect them to finish Top 10 and your going to be severely dissappointed and more of those players aren't going to make it, as they are still playing alongside their Reserves Friends, they arent learning from experienced professionals like they should be. (and the experienced players we have are dog awful too)

  9. As mentioned already we could easily have blooded these kids younger and in a better way.

Giving Clark a run of games at CB with one of Herd/Bannan/Gardner in midfield. Later on possibly giving Baker some games at CB with another midfielder and gradually giving more games to the ones who outperform expectations.

Throwing Clark, Baker, Lichaj, Herd, Bannan, Albrighton, Gardner, Carruthers and Weimann into situations where the club is relying on them performing beyond expectations for relatively young players in their first season-or-so in the premier league is whats ruining not only our club but also their careers. Our squad is so poor we currently miss not having 18 yr old Carruthers in the squad to give us a wide outlet. Thats how bad it's gotten. Carruthers should be a Capitol-One Cup player and maybe getting the odd few minutes, however we find ourself in a position of (presuming we dont buy a winger) praying the kid comes back from injury quickly.

    tl;dr: We need investment.

  10. Sell up and go and buy a player who can actually play this role, hes better than most of the squad but doesnt actually do anything with his talent. Get rid, bring in Raul Garcia in his place and a more attacking midfielder.

  11. Lambert needs the claret and blues to create more chances on his home debut against Everton than they did in last weekend’s opening-day defeat at West Ham.

The manager has encouraged his creative players to be bolder in the final third – and reassured them they will not be criticised for losing the ball if they are trying to make things happen.

Darren Bent was isolated in last Saturday’s setback at Upton Park and Lambert admits it is his responsibility to improve the supply lines from the likes of Charles N’Zogbia, Stephen Ireland and Brett Holman.

“I don’t curtail any creative player,” he said. “The team we had on the pitch on Saturday I thought might have got us a goal or two but it never materialised.

“Everybody has got to work together. I’m not a ‘blame an individual’ person. We never did it as a team.

“As for Darren, you need everything, whether it is outside the box or inside the box. I know that’s his trademark – he’s a brilliant finisher, that’s for sure. It’s up to us to get that service to him and try to get him into the positions to score.

“I just think with Darren, every time the ball goes into the box, you think something is going to happen. It’s up to us to try to get him into the areas where he can make it happen.”

Lambert does not believe his flair players are suffering a crisis of confidence from last season – but he does acknowledge they need to be more adventurous in taking on opposition defences.

“I’d like to think that there’s not a hangover from last year,” he said. “I wasn’t part of what happened last year, so I never really go into that.

“It’s new so I’ve just got to try and get the best out of people like that and get them to perform. They’re really talented players but you’ve got to have an end product to your game and on Saturday they never had that.

“I never criticise somebody for making a mistake, especially in the last third of the pitch, because it’s the hardest thing to do.

    Free LOVEFiLM Trial

“So I don’t have a problem with people trying to take people on and making things happen. It’s when we don’t do it then, with the talent they’ve got, that’s a problem.

“Regarding freedom, they’ve got carte blanche to make things happen in the last third of the pitch.”

  12. Posted some quotes from Mat Kendricks article in some of the other threads (the whole thing is available in the Cresswell thread). Lambert on new signings:

Lambert, who also ended surprise speculation linking Villa with moves for Tottenham’s Jermain Defoe and Stoke’s Kenwyne Jones, is still on the lookout for players to bolster his squad in the next week.

“I don’t think you ever stop looking to improve everywhere,” he said.

“We’ve only had one game, so we’re still finding our feet of what the team’s like. But in time players might come in so that’s what we’ll have to look at.

“Do I expect signings? I don’t know. I know what can happen, it can go right up to the last minute so we’ll just have to wait and see.’’

Asked if any incoming business was subject to players leaving, Lambert added: “If someone becomes available and I think it’s worthwhile then we’ll have that conversation.

“I’m pretty sure the chairman would listen to any ideas I have. I’ve had good conversations with him and there’s not a problem.

“Randy Lerner’s been great, him and Paul Faulkner. They’ve been really, really fine.”

    In the article Lambert says:

    - We are looking at Cresswell as well as many other left backs

    - Dunne isnt going to Stoke

    - We arent getting Kenwyne Jones or Defoe

    - Warnock is in the reserves but isn't beyond redeeming himself.

Not much we didnt already know

  13. Lambert confirmed Warnock has been excluded from training with the first-team squad as Villa try to find a taker for the 30-year-old defender as he enters the final year of his contract.

But the manager insisted neither he nor fellow full-back outcast Alan Hutton were beyond redemption if they do not find new clubs before next Friday’s transfer deadline.

“Stephen’s been all right, he’s been fine,” said Lambert.

“I’ve got to work with lads that are young and I’ve got to get them into my way of thinking as well. The squad will evolve – that’s normal in football.

“You never say never on anything, I’ve just made a decision I think is right for the club.”

    From the Birmingham Mail.
  14. AARON Cresswell remains high on Villa’s list of left-back targets – but Paul Lambert has shrugged off talk of Richard Dunne leaving before next week’s transfer deadline.

Lambert admits the Ipswich defender is still among several full-backs he is considering as unwanted Stephen Warnock is pushed closer to the exit door. But the boss has dismissed rumours linking Dunne with a move to Stoke, confirming Villa have not heard from the Potters or any other club about the injured centre-half.

Asked about Cresswell, about whom Villa made an initial enquiry last month, Lambert replied: “There’s a few (left-backs) out there, I’d be interested in. I can’t talk about anybody else’s players, but there’s a few. Cresswell? He’s one of many I’m looking at.”

Reports in the English and Irish press have claimed Stoke are closing in on a deal for Dunne, who is out injured until mid-September as he recovers from groin surgery.

But Lambert expects Dunne to be available for Villa once he completes his rehab and says he has never considered selling the experienced defender.

“I haven’t heard anything,” said Lambert. “He just came back off the Euros and played a couple of games and got injured, so he’s doing his rehab at the moment.

“My main concern is the game against Everton. I haven’t even thought about anything like selling Richard.

“Richard has been very good. He’s had a brilliant career for club and for his national team. He’s been really fine. I remember seeing the shoulder thing, that was a blow to the team and he came back for the last couple of games.”
