  1. Good debut. Some nice touches and took his goal well. Very promising and an exciting player.

On the flip side it was a 20 minute performance and 'Legend in the making' etc is very premature. Not to put a downer on anything but think this needs to be reeled in. If he does this all season, then yeah a legend in the making.

    Not yet.

  2. Both Westwood and Benteke undergoing medicals

CHRISTIAN Benteke and Ashley Westwood are currently under going medicals as Villa attempt to complete a beat-the-deadline double swoop.

Benteke has jetted in from Belgium and is now in the West Midlands after the claret and blues agreed a fee for the striker with Genk.

And Westwood has travelled down from Crewe in an attempt to finalise his move from the League One club before this evening’s 11pm deadline.

Villa still have to complete the paperwork for the duo, but are optimistic both deals will go through ahead of the late night cut-off point.

If the deals go through the signings of Benteke and Westwood are likely to signal an end of Villa's transfer business for the summer window.

They have already recruited Brett Holman, Karim El Ahmadi, Matthew Lowton, Ron Vlaar, Joe Bennett and Jordan Bowery as well as re-signing Brad Guzan on a new deal.

  3. Dont get the transfer fees = / = wages thing.

    Wages = £

    Transfer Fees = £.

We cant have some £ but not have other £.

We either do, or do not have £. We dont. Thats fine, we needed to downsize what we were spending and I understand it means we'll be buying smartly, great! I just feel like some people think this whole wages thing means that we can spunk £10m on a player if we can get them to accept normal wages. We cant, we're skint. In both fee's and wages, it will be good for us in the long run. But this 'we can afford transfer fees but not wages' is just bull imo.

  4. Meanwhile, Villa wrapped up the signing of left-back Joe Bennett from Middlesbrough last night for a fee believed to be in the region of £2.5m.

The England Under-21 international has penned a four-year deal at Villa and admitted he is desperate to make his debut at Newcastle this weekend.

“I am really excited to have joined a massive club in Villa and I’m eager to fight for a starting place and get in the team,” Bennett said. “It’s up to the manager to pick the team, of course, but it would be great to go back to the north east this weekend and make my debut against Newcastle at St James’s Park. I am excited to get started.

“My priority will be to impress the manager and gain a place in the starting XI. It will be a special moment when I pull on the claret and blue shirt for the first time.

“I’m determined to earn the respect of my team-mates and the Villa supporters. I know it’s going to be really exciting here in the years ahead and I really want to play my part.”

  5. Villa were today prepared to pull the plug on a move for Genk striker Christian Benteke unless the Belgian club lower their price.

The claret and blues have submitted an improved offer of around £6m for the 21-year-old but it is claimed that Genk have nearly doubled the price for the Belgium international.

Villa chiefs have not given up hope of a deal being struck but they will not be held to ransom by Genk for a player who is seen as talented but relatively unproven.

Benteke is understood to be eager to force the move through and is unlikely to be involved in Genk’s Europa League clash with Lucerne tonight after he missed training.

Should the move collapse Lambert may turn his attentions to Lazio’s Argentine forward Mauro Zarate, who had a loan at Birmingham City in 2007-08, after speculation in Italy linked him with a move to Villa Park.

The claret and blues are also on the verge of signing Chesterfield target man Jordan Bowery for an initial £500,000 which would rise to £1m based on appearances.

Bowery, 21, has a modest strike rate of 10 goals in 83 league appearances for Chesterfield but has been the radar of several Premier League clubs since he broke into the Spireites first team at the age of 17.

  8. This would seriously strengthen up our midfield also think moving Ireland further down the pitch would help us out tremendously as he isnt creating enough as the Second Striker.

    Lowton-Vlaar-Clark-Bennett

    ------------Annan?------------

    -----Ahmadi----Ireland------

    ------------Zarate-------------

    -------Bent--Benteke---------

Is looking pretty strong with a bench of: Guzan, Lichaj, Baker, Delph, Gabby, Nzogbia, Holman

  9. Not going to lie its been a really hard decision for me. Ive spoken to a lot of people about it and for my development i think I've made the right choice. Im going to miss everyone at Middlesbrough. I just want to say thank you to everyone that has supported me through out my time there. Im excited for a new challenge at Aston Villa!

    Can follow him @JoeBennett27

  11. Done and dusted. It's official.

Paul Lambert is convinced that Joe Bennett will "thrive and fit in exactly with what we are trying to build here" as the England U21 international defender completed a four-year deal which will secure his future at Aston Villa to the end of the 2015-16 season.

Bennett's capture from Middlesbrough has increased the number of signings made by the club in this transfer window to six, following on from fellow defenders Ron Vlaar and Matt Lowton, midfield general Karim El Ahmadi and wide man Brett Holman, along with goalkeeper Brad Guzan who re-signed following four years previously at Villa Park.

The 22-year-old left-back has been lauded by Boro boss Tony Mowbray for his "quality, speed and technique" and for Lambert his youthful enthusiasm, desire and energy proved compelling.

"Joe's a really good player, young and hungry to succeed and he's exactly the type of player we want here at the football club," said Villa boss Lambert.

"There's no doubt in my mind that he will thrive in this environment and he fits in exactly with what we are trying to build here.

"His energy level is really high and he can get up and down the pitch really well, which will be important for the team and important in terms of how we want to play as a team.

"He's an exciting signing for the club and I'm really pleased we've been able to take him here."

Bennett started 84 games in all competitions for Middlesbrough, appearing on eight more occasions as a substitute and scoring one goal after graduating from youth level at the Riverside and signing his first pro contract in summer 2008.

He was an ever-present for Mowbray's men in 2011-12, playing in 45 matches in all competitions and completing 41 appearances in the Championship.

In 2010-11 he was voted the club's player of the year and young player of the year when he played in 31 Championship games and 33 in all competitions, while his performances last season earned him the North East Football Writers' Association's young player of the year accolade.

"I am really excited to have joined a massive club in Aston Villa and I'm eager to fight for a starting place and get in the team," Bennett said.

"It's up to the manager to pick the team, of course, but it would be great to go back to the north east this weekend and make my debut against Newcastle at St James's Park.

"When I first heard about the move a lot of things ran through my head. There was excitement and nerves and most of all a real buzz about the prospect of coming to Villa and playing in the Premier League.

"Now that it's come around so fast, I'm just raring to go. I've had a look around the stadium and the training ground and the facilities are top-class. You can tell straight away this is a massive club.

"I know a few of the players from England U21s, the likes of Nathan Delfouneso and Nathan Baker and that will help in terms of settling in. I'm looking forward to it.

"My approach has always been to get forward and try to create things. In my opinion Ashley Cole and Gael Clichy are the best full backs around and if I keep working on my game and improving it I know I can succeed at this level and help the team.

"It was not long ago that I was given my professional debut at Middlesbrough by Gareth Southgate and it is a real privilege to now follow in his footsteps and join a club with Villa's heritage.

"I am very grateful to get this opportunity and I'm very grateful to the Middlesbrough chairman, Mr. Gibson, all of the Middlesbrough staff and fans and, particularly, Tony Mowbray for giving me the opportunity to prove my ability.

"I am fully focused now on my career here at Villa and I'm really eager to get started.

"My priority will be to impress the manager and gain a place in the starting XI. It will be a special moment when I pull on the claret and blue shirt for the first time.

"I'm determined to earn the respect of my team-mates and the Aston Villa supporters. I know it's going to be really exciting here in the years ahead and I really want to play my part."

  12. Why? For all we know he is the new Drogba. He isnt going to be the captain or starting over Gabby, he'll likely be loaned out or get a few Capitol One Cup games... no harm. It's 600k! it's pocket change, It;s like 1/3 of the wage we were giving Heskey. Sign the lad up if Lambert wants him. Just needs to be one of a few players, if he's our big signing then I agree, we're ****. But as backup then im all for it.

  13. More than willing to take on a punt for 600k but a League Two striker isnt exactly the experience we are crying out for. As long as we get another striker in too then I'm all for this, worried that we are only being linked to Early-Twenties players though...

Lowton, Clark, Baker, Bennett, Herd, Bannan, Delph, Stephens, Benteke, Weimann and Browery are alot of inexperienced players!

  14. Aston Villa boss Paul Lambert is making a shock £1.2 million move for Chesterfield's young giant striker Jordan Bowery - in a surprise solution.

Lambert is under fire to land a big-name forward after a poor start to his reign, but instead he has turned to the managerless League Two outfit for their star discovery.

Bowery, a strong target man and scorer, has come good in recent months and has attracted interest from several leading sides. But Lambert has stepped in first.

Villa have tabled an offer of £600,000 up front and doubling up with extras for appearances and supremo Chris Turner is ready to let the 21-year-old talk to Lambert about the dream move.

Call in the reinforcements! Paul Lambert needs back-up after a slow start to the season

    Clive Mason

Bowery has been a success despite the Spireites going down last season and boss John Sheridan losing his job a couple of games into this campaign.

The home-grown hit man would take the chance of playing in the Premier League even if the Villa fans will be astounded about the potential solution to their problems.

However Lambert is not afraid to look at the lower levels and Chesterfield's last target man of this type - Kevin Davies - went on to a top-flight career.

The other striker on Lambert's list is his namesake, Southampton forward Rickie.
