  1. Was gutted we never got him in the summer and really hope we can get him in the January window but unfortunately I think the price will (still) be too much for what we are willing to pay, shame.

If we stay up this season I think there is a very good possibility he will be wearing claret and blue next season, so fingers crossed🤞

  2.                 Nyland

    Elmo  Konsa  Hause  Taylor

           Lansbury  Hourihane

    Trez           Jota             Kodjia

I agree with you on the formations but I'd like to see us play a 4-4-2 diamond with a Marvelous, McGinn, Hourihane and Grealish in midfield. And Wes and Kodija up front.

I wouldn't have a problem with that either as it's usually the wide players that we have that are the most inconsistent (though currently the whole team are going through a dodgy spell). I think Smith has tried to keep the team as 'settled' as he can - which I get - but I think we need to mix it up a little from time to time.

Didn't get to watch today but not the result I had hoped for.

Do we have to look at a change of formation? Maybe try to get a second striker on the pitch from the beginning?

The next three games will define our season.

I said pre-match we should have lined up differently and basically to match up with their formation but I knew it wouldn't happen. I am not saying it would definitely have got us a better result but for me lining up the way we did it was a banker home win and I'm shocked people are surprised by the result. This is one criticism I have with Deano is him not trying a different formation when things are currently not going to plan. I think we had the personnel to play 3-5-2 today and it may have served us better. I'd personally prefer us to try a 4-2-3-1 too. But ultimately I think the players (not the formation) need to take a look at themselves. I think a good win on Tuesday would lift the players and comes at a perfect time for me before Southampton's visit. Let's see where we are after that!

For the record, talk of sacking the manager is downright embarrassing as are some of the posts on the match threads. At what point did people think this season wasn't going to be a struggle? Of course it was. Let's get behind the team or those fickle comments just get more and more accurate!

I’m afraid that you’re looking through very rose tinted spectacles. Leicester were better than us in every aspect of the game, GK aside. We were fortunate not to end with a 8 or 9-1 defeat. They were quicker, sharper, had far more intensity, more organisation. They smashed us completely on the day because we were poor and they were good.

To be fair the original poster does have a point, goals do change games. We had extremely good chances to go 1-0 up on a couple of occasions and with confidence lifted, the crowd behind us, the game could have been a lot different.

That said, when the third went in Leicester did look a class apart.

  6. I'm not quite sure why this thread is always bumped to the top page, probably cos of people like me chipping in 😉 but for what it's worth, my two penneth...

Bruce is not the devil like some would believe and overall he did an OK job at Villa. He got the feel good factor at the club back, steadied the ship and got us winning football matches (albeit not in a particular 'attractive' way). He led us to a play off final but we ultimately came up short against a much better 'footballing' side. He obviously has good traits as a manager which currently seem to be rubbing off at Newcastle but long term I don't think he is the answer. For them. Or would have been for us. His style of play may be picking up a fair number of points so far but ultimately I very much doubt it will last. It will only get you so far.

As for Smith, I think he has been pretty much spot on with every decision he has made since he arrived here. The achievement in getting us promoted was fantastic and the style of football and the desire to win EVERY game is a breath of fresh air.

We are in a different league now against much superior teams and as a manager he is learning but he definitely deserves the trust and patience of ALL our support for a long time yet.

I thought tactically against Leicester he got it wrong (first time I've questioned him to be honest), I think we underestimated their strengths and played way too open. I would hope that he develops a different side to our game because there are times when you need to grind out results a la Bruce and not rely on outscoring the opponent but I am confident that he is the man to do this.

  7. Tough, tough game... although we need to start winning games I would probably take a point from this one. Actually... no I wouldn't, we, in my opinion, have the better players, it's all about having the desire and physically matching these which is key to getting a result (a la Newcastle last week)! I just hope the Leicester performance has hurt our lads and we can really put on a strong solid show and bring the 3 points home.

I would be tempted to match up like-for-like with the blades and make it all about winning the personal battles, would be risky but would maybe shore the defence up a little and take Wilder by surprise. Obviously depends on Mings fitness and would be a risk if he broke down. Think McGinn should start deeper and let Jack play more central with a change up top which most fans are calling for. I really want Wes to succeed and have been less critical than many but yesterday he was very poor even by the low standards he has set.

                     Heaton

         Konsa    Engels    Mings

    Guilbert                         Targett

                 McGinn    Luiz

                     Grealish

           Kodjia           El Ghazi

Subs: Nyland, Hause, Nakamba, Lansbury, Hourihane, Trezeguet, Wesley

    Sharp versus blunt.

In general play, in the stuff that happens between the boxes, we matched them, we had plenty of the play and we created opportunities for things to happen in their box - they did the same to us - the difference tended to be that Leicester are a six foot hooded man with a straight razor in a badly lit alley and we're a four year old with a nerf gun at the wacky warehouse. They are clinical in finishing off attacks, they're quick, they're smart and they finish - they didn't misplace much in the final third and  the whole team plays to make sure the strikers can score goals. For us, we're the opposite, we're good at getting to the opposition box, but from there things break down, we overplay, we get clogged up, we don't threaten, the whole team plays to make up for our lack of threat  - for me, we matched Leicester outside of the final act of scoring goals - but it's the final act that counts and they were a class apart from us at doing it.

In the first half we huffed and puffed and eventually got a goal we deserved through Grealish, I thought 2-1 was a reasonably fair reflection of things and I felt we were still in it - we opened the second half well and then after four minutes gave away a corner on the break and decided not to mark the most obvious threat that Leicester have from set pieces - game over on 49 minutes. It was the worst bit of defending I've seen at Villa Park for years - a corner floated over to the man everyone knew the corner would be aimed at and him allowed to head unchallenged and unmarked into our net. It finished things - sometimes even when the opposition have advantages, you still have to not beat yourself.

I thought tactically our style suited them more than theirs suited us - we try to play with the ball and get high up the pitch, they break and murder you with pace - and whilst Jamie Vardy may be a truly repugnant piece of human filth, if you give him space to run into he'll score goals for fun. We gave him space all day. They're smart, they play with seven behind the ball then break with two very quick strikers and a clever attacking midfielder in Maddison and they're hard to stop without numbers staying back - it's a good system - most teams leave more men back, which is one of the reasons that they have such a good defensive record. They're hard to attack because you need to stay nervous about the counter and we attacked more than most teams will, largely because we have to attack twice as much as most teams do to score.

Wesley, Wesley, Wesley. It's now been at least two whole games since I can recall our only passable striker having an effort on goal - that's not two games since he scored, that's two games since he tried to score. He works hard at times, he can be a nuisance to defenders - but he's not a goalscorer and he's not a goalscoring threat - and we desperately need someone who is. Kodjia was always selfish and unreliable, he's now also old and disinterested, Davis is injured - which means we either have to stick with Wesley for the next four or five games until we get to the window - or we have to find a system that doesn't need a striker - neither of those things sound like a good idea to me. It's a big problem.

It was a strange game - I thought in some ways the 4-1 scoreline flattered them, but then it's also true that they could have scored another two or three quite easily - if we'd made anything of our huff and puff it could have been different - but we didn't and more worryingly perhaps we can't.

Their fans were very good on a strangely quiet day at Villa Park - they were very respectful of the applause for Ron Saunders at the start of the game and earned the right to be annoying at the end, it's a great time for them and they're enjoying it. They're really well organised and whilst Brendan Rodgers is a weirdo who you wouldn't leave alone in your house, he's proving a very good football manager. Good luck to em.

We got a bundle of things wrong, tactically and in our play and we were punished. On top of that we've further exposed a massive glaring weakness that we don't have the ability in our squad to address. It's been a difficult day. I don't think we need to panic, thankfully we're now through a very tough group of fixtures with a much friendlier looking set of games ahead of us; I still think we'll be fine this season.

Leicester will make the Champions league on this showing, we'll stay up reasonably comfortably I think - but to make this game different next season we're going to need reinforcements at the business end, because today was pat-a-cake against a dagger.

    Summed up to perfection 👏

  9. I think a lot of this one comes down to belief, we have an abysmal record at Old Trafford (much like most teams I would imagine, but ours is painfully bad), but this isn't a United side with Keane, Beckham, Giggs ETC...

It will be a massive occasion for a number of our players in front of 70,000 + home fans and we need to show that we have what it takes to perform on a big stage - if we do that then I firmly believe we have the players to bring home a positive result.

They have a decent front free which will probably cause us problems but have others have alluded to we have a better midfield (I wouldn't swap any of ours for theirs!) and they can definitely be got at at the back.

I know Smith likes to play either (or both) of Nakamba and Luiz against teams he feels we wont get as much of the ball, but the way we play, Utd play and the performance of Conor on Monday it would be extreely harsh to drop him therefore I think he should stick with the same eleven and go all out for plenty of possession and ultimately 3 points. I'd possibly switch Nakamba for Luiz but would be happy with either.

If we believe in ourselves and start well then I think we can nick this 1-2. UTV.

  10. His performances have definitely dipped since the England call up, that said the quality of opposition also increased (prior to Newcastle), but hopefully it is just a blip and he puts in star performance in the next 3 matches - which to get some positive results we will need him to do.

He was poor against Newcastle until probably the last 20 minutes then he started to play like the player we've all grown to love.

No way he should be dropped, but I think it's a real positive sign that people would even consider that and shows how well Engels and now Konsa have done this season - Competition for places is what it is all about.

  11. I mentioned after the Brighton match that Jack was a nailed on member of the next England squad so I take full responsibility, so sorry lads and er.... sorry Jack 😓

But on a serious note, I think we all thought that this was his time for selection and I am pretty baffled that Southgate has decided to overlook him again even after watching some of his fine recent performances.

The injury he sustained last time out would have been the only reason for the England manager leaving him out.. IMO, though it could be a bit of a blessing in disguise (from a Villa perspective) that he can now rest up after the Wolves game.

It is ridiculous to compare him to Delph who is a completely different player, but the question for me is do we really need Delph in this squad for these up and coming games, when we have Rice and Henderson - It was the prefect opportunity to have a look at Jack on the International stage and see what he can bring to the party - which as Villa fans, we all know - The ability to carry the ball, glide past players nonchalantly, pick a pass, draw fouls ETC... He really is different to practically every other player in the squad bar possibly Maddison.

I may be biased, well there is no maybe about it, I AM biased, we probably all are on this topic, but he would be one of the first names in the squad for me, behind the obvious ones in Sterling and Kane - he just would give us something extra to our play.

As for Southgate, I think he has done a decent job overall, blending in younger players and trying a decent style of football but I am not one of these that would get carried away with being World Cup Semi Finalists, in 90 minutes we beat Tunisia (last minute), Panama and Sweden! Any decent opposition and we came up short, therefore Jury still out!

Back to Jack - A nice goal and victory at Molineux would be just the tonic!

So if the this season pans out as we hope and we survive in the Prem, how would people feel if he left after this season?

    1) Will he have done his 'duty' by staying with the club that helped establish his talents on the big stage and be let go with best wishes.

    2) Should really give us another year to see if the club can match his ambition and if not go at the end of next season when he's 25 going on 26

    3) Never leave. What's better than captaining your home town club,  being close to your family and being paid very well for it.

    This for me.

I said that if we didn't get promotion last season (which for a long time was looking unlikely) we would lose Jack at the end of the season so what a relief for us all that we managed to achieve promotion and nothing can take away the fact he led us back to the Premier League.

I sincerely hope we stay up this season and our owners / management show serious ambition in the summer transfer window and Jack feels like there is a real chance of success staying at his boyhood club, but I would respect his decision to leave should he go to another club such as Liverpool, Man City ETC - as horrible as it would be!

Hope he is fit for Sunday, if he is then a definite starter for me.

Engels played well all season, Konsa looks good against lesser opposition, I know let’s pick Konsa against the league leaders, solid decision bound to get a result.

I detect a lot of sarcasm in this post.

You're right, Engels has looked pretty solid this season and will probably start tomorrow but I don't think it's ludacris to suggest a) Konsa might be better suited to nullify Liverpool's front three or b) playing Konsa would automatically mean we are defeated 🙄

My side would be: (feel free to criticise or obliterate even)

    Heaton

    Guilbert Engels Mings Targett

    McGinn Nakamba Luiz

Trezeguet Wesley Grealish (if fit, if not El Ghazi)

Bench: Steer, Elmohamady, Konsa, Taylor, Lansbury, El Ghazi (if Grealish is fit) Davis

Liverpool are a great side and should be respected but not feared, they are the current European champions. If we play like we did against Man City, particularly during the first half, we will have a chance. Personally, I think anyone can beat anyone on any given day, it should be a great spectacle :)

Might have been easier saying 'same team as the one that played City' 😉

Davis won't be on bench he's injured, King Kodge will be though 👍

Don’t rate him, never have and don’t think I ever will.

Has he shagged your missus Trent? 👀😉

On a serious note I have noticed that you are clearly not a fan of him, which is fair enough, I agree his Villa performances haven't been great and I know you wasn't a fan when he was at Forest so you've probably seen him a lot more than me.

I thought he was ok last night and his pass for the first goal was sublime - I think he has more talent than you give him credit for to be honest.

I think DS will stick with the team that turned out last weekend, he'll prefer Trez's work rate against good opposition even though he's provides less threat of a goal that AEG. No chance Elmo is getting in ahead of Guilbert. Konsa is the future but Engels for now I think.

I think you're probably right that he will more than likely go with the same side as the one that played Ci£y, I wouldn't have a problem with that, it will be a tough game regardless of what team we put out but hopefully we can give a good account of ourselves.

  17. Assuming Jack has recovered in time for this one and going on the performances of the fringe players last night, I think the main decisions Smith is faced with are the following;

Elmo or Guilbert - Elmo played well against Wolves and got a goal to boot,  but against a pacy Liverpool strike force I think Guilbert is better suited.

Horuihane or Lansbury for either Luiz or Nakamba - Lansbury was better than Conor but I think neither will start on Saturday - If Jack doesn't make it, possibly Henri would get a chance.

El Ghazi or Trezeguet - Anwar was the better of the two I think and at the moment more likely to pop up with a goal so I'd side with him for this one.

Konsa or Engels - Ezri looked assured last night albeit against weaker opposition whereas Engels hasn't done a lot wrong since he joined, I don't expect many would agree, but I would be tempted to start with Konsa for this, again maybe better suited to the opposition.

    The rest pick themselves.

What was Liverpools lineup yesterday? If they played their reserves then they should be asked to play their reserves in the quarter final to allow their seniors to play in the world club thingy. if so then I don't see how it's any different to resting players for the weekend game that usually follows a midweek cup game.

Gomez, Milner, Ox, Lallana, Keita, and Origi all started last night - I would envisage all these players would be in their squad for the Club World Cup.

  19. I think best (realistic) scenario would be a semi final line up of us, Everton, Man City and Man Utd with the latter two playing each other in the semi final and us facing Utd in a one-off final.

Having said that, I think a Villa v Leicester semi would be great games!

  20. Positives.

Through to the Quarter Finals which basically is all that matters.

Luiz - controlled middle of park. Would have been my MOTM but for concedeing possession for the equaliser.

Lansbury with 2 assists, first one was a delightful pass - which shows he does have something regardless of his haters.

Elmo with a goal and a solid performance. Decent back up player.

Konsa and Hause looked unflustered - maybe it was the level of performance of opposition.

Davis looked handy at linking up play as we know he can.

    Negatives.

Davis injury. Hope it's not too bad.

Taylor was erm.. Taylor. Nearly cost us with that back pass and like many have alluded to, he just kills our momentum.

Inconsistencies with our wide men. I ain't writing either off, but I want to see more over the course of the season.

Hopefully a kind draw in the next round and who knows what could happen. Fingers crossed.

  21. If all fit I think Smith will go for;

Steer, Elmo, Konsa, Hause, Targett, El Ghazi, McGinn, Hourihane, Lansbury, Trezeguet, Davis

The ones in bold I believe are definite ones to start IMO.

    Then for me it's a choice between;

Hause / Mings or Engels or a lesser extent Chester.

    Taylor / Targett.

    McGinn / Luiz or Nakamba.

I personally would try keep the back four as strong as possible, regardless of what side they put out they will be capable of punishing a weakened defence. Give Mings / McGinn 60 minutes and let's get off to a flying start! Think the front 3 picks itself tonight unless Kodje is somewhere very lose fitness wise.
