We’ve got to get a home draw. We always seem to get drawn away.
-
Does not matter who we draw. We are winning it this year. It’s time.

As would every player in world football.
Your logic is beyond backwards, if you can't see that Emi has the raw attributes to be a top player, and Emery is the best manager we are going to get to make that happen, then I am unable to help you.
I hope you’re right but I really don’t think that you are. We’ll just have to wait and see. He isn’t strong, he isn’t fast, he doesn’t hit the ball particularly hard, he’s small and he gives the ball away a lot. He’s decent (not great) in tight spaces but he doesn’t have the pace to break away and often when he does find space he loses possession anyway.
I would be much less shocked if Coutinho starts to flourish under Unai, than I would if Emi does. Hopefully they both will. -

You just wanted to sell a £40m asset for half his value after he's had absolutely no time with a world class manager whatsoever. This is after making an uninformed decision on his ability level based on 1 year with the managerial equivalent of a breeze block.
The problem is. If he now has a year with a top manager and he’s still not very good, then his value will have plummeted. I don’t know how you can value him as a £40m asset. We paid less than that for him and he has been poor. I too would take £20m for him. I want him to prove me wrong but he doesn’t appear to have the raw attributes to justify his price tag.

Our record of buying GK’s is utterly woeful! Goodness knows how we managed to stumble across Emi. Even a broken clock gets it right twice a day I suppose.

I really foresaw us winning this trophy in Unai’s first season. Disappointed we didn’t go big in this game tbh.
Anyway hopefully he will realise our squad outside of about 7 players is immensely weak.
He’s gonna win the FA cup instead!

He will have learnt a lot from seeing some of our squad players tonight.I agree. It was a worthwhile evening from that point of view. Unai cannot work miracles. We have players who just implode under the smallest amount of pressure. He will get it right but we must be patient.

Poor old Unai saw the real villa tonight. 11 goals conceded in last three away matches! Shudder!
He needs to fix our away form fast. A point or more at Brighton on Sunday would be a great start.
-
I thought he was decent tonight. His goal was top class.

Anonymous again. I just don’t get him I’m afraid.

Not a great day at the office for Ty! He was all over the place.

I actually enjoyed that. Tactically we have been spot on. They look fairly devoid of ideas and we are growing into the game.

Poor old John just can’t find any form. He looks totally lost out there tonight. I hope he can turn it around but it’s seeming to look less and less likely. A goal would do him the world of good.

Under Gerrard, both wing backs were pushing forward, same for McGinn and Ramsey, that means it wasn’t really anyone to pass to at the back, and we had to go long.
Under Emery, the back four, Martinez, Luiz, Dendoncker were available on our half, made it impossible for ManU to press them all, meaning there were always somebody available to pass to.
That Man Utd team that was selected on Sunday was never going to be that effective in the press. It will be really interesting to see how we cope against Brighton next weekend as they press very well. They will certainly test us much more than Utd did.

Couldn't agree more. This is why I will be turning up in my normal suit, tie and bowler hat, Daily Telegraph stuffed under one arm.
Nice to hear you’re still going strong Mr Benn. How’s the shopkeeper? (One for the kids!)

Mate, I've got to ask - what are you basing this lack of patience on? People keep bringing it up. SG? Deano? Tony Xia?
And the bit in bold - do you actually believe that or are you using hyperbole for effect? I'm fine with the latter, otherwise that's going to need a bit more detail.
I genuinely think that the only manager afforded any patience in probably the last 20 years was Dean. Gerrard had his dissenters from the very first day as did Bruce, Di Matteo, McLeish, Houllier to name just a few.
I know that this is partly due to really poor appointments and also a depressed period of pretty awful form but we, I include myself in that, can be very impatient. We all think we know better than the bloke qualified to do the job and whom spends every day with the players. We are all guilty of thinking that the bloke who’s not getting picked is much better than the incumbent.
We have had a rough trot over the past 15 years or so. I understand why people are impatient but it really is totally counter productive. We are basically self harming!

This is a key moment for our football club. I have supported Villa for nearly 40 years. Emery is easily the best qualified manager that we have hired during that time. He is absolutely levels above any manager that we have had for decades. He also appears to be a really good guy.
It really has to be now for us. If this guy can’t get us going, then it is completely broken. Hopefully the fans will recognise this and get right behind him. I actually think that our supporters could be the biggest barrier to success. He will be backed by the board and he will evolve the squad appropriately but if the supporters aren’t patient, there’s a chance that things won’t work out.For what it’s worth, I really get a feeling that this is going to be a success. It will take time and this season in particular is going to continue to be frustrating. We may have to wait a while for his first win but we have to remain focused on the bigger picture. This guy improves football teams. This guy wins trophies. This guy knows more than any one of us fans. Let’s get behind him and play our part.

I actually think that the result yesterday was helpful to Unai. People were getting carried away after Brentford and yesterday really helped to reset the expectation levels. It will hopefully buy him more time with even the most impatient of fans recognising the enormity of the task.
Unai will also look at yesterday and see lots of quick fixes. Lots of things that can be introduced quickly and easily and will improve things from the off. He will also change things in game to try and reverse momentum. I don’t think that this is something that Dean or Gerrard were particularly effective at.
The rest of this season is going to be a bit of a roller coaster but in time, through coaching and effective recruitment, we will get a more consistent level of performance. We will need to be patient though. Effective change will take time.

He is a prime example of how our transfer system is floored. We seem to look for bargain players who we think we can improve but ultimately they have floors in their game that we cannot address.
Cash and Watkins are fine athletes. They are strong, relatively quick and they can run all day. They do however have massive technical floors to their game. The opposition do not have to work hard at all to get the ball back from them. It’s like taking sweets from a young child. So often the ball gets played out to Cash and he is instantly pressured by one/two players and we lose possession. Even when he takes the ball in space, his distribution is poor, as is his decision making.
We then have other players like Emi/Phil/Ings/Bailey who are technically good enough but do not have the physical capability to be effective in the league.
I read someone else on another thread suggesting that Chambers may get selected at right back ahead of Cash. I would also pick Young ahead of him at the moment. He is a championship winger trying to make it at a big PL club. You can’t fault his effort but he is out of his depth.
