Freddie came on and played on the left against Crewe didn't he?  Might be worth a try at home to play both him and Elmo for games we expect to play on the front foot while Targett is out.

I  was thinking this could be an option too

despite the 3 defeats, it would take a brave man to drop them.....I don't think they are the issue......I think others need to step up......those 2 are trying to carry others and its proving tough.

It’s unfortunate for Lansbury that he is up against those 2, I agree I don’t see smith dropping them. Give Lansbury 20 minutes at least

After calming down enough to come on this site I wanted to offer a point on DL.

One of the reasons I think we didn’t play well was due to his positional play. The number of times he came back to get the ball and ended up between the centre half’s and on occasions behind them gave Palace a numerical advantage in the midfield making it easier to win second balls and build up pressure. He needs to learn to find space in front of Mings and Engles which will ease the pressure. Think in time it will come but we have enough options to swap it around, which I think we should for the next game and give Douglas further time to understand the role we need him to play.

I agree with this, I also think he needs to show for a pass a bit more specifically when our CBs are in possession. Its forcing Mings to either go wide to full backs or hit it long and is also making grealish come far to deep to receive the ball

  4. I thought Sanchez did okay - not great, but I don't think he was bad, he needs to get rid of that extra touch they gave him in Spain - Cleverly made bad decisions on a number of occasions and I think he has much to work on too.

I think we've learned that Grealish isn't ready to start games yet, he's got a lot to work on in terms of the defensive side of his game and he very nearly cost us a fourth goal with a really sloppy bit of positional play midway through the second half. He looks good on the ball and he's going to be a heck of a player, but I think we're using him the right way at the minute.

We'd persuaded ourselves about our invincible defence, and in fairness, with half an hour gone, I think we were starting to convince Arsenal too - they looked to be starting to question themselves - but the minute the first one went in, a bubble went pop, we panicked and they gained a massive boost of confidence - a combination of good play/poor play and circumstance which might actually do us good in the long term.

No complaints from me, they were the better side on the day, and they are a better side in general, but I think we've got something to work with here when everyone is well and fit.

Sorry but I thought that Sanchez was abysmal. The commentators said they had never seen so bad a CM and I would have agree. They even speculated that he was only kept on after that first half to give him a chance to make a slightly better impression and to not rock his confidence too much, but it did not help at all - I really hope he was sick too, because that was bad and it highlighted just how good Westi is.

I agree i havnt seen a worse cm performance for villa in quite a while, nerves? Match fitness? Over hyped? We will see which one I guess

  5. We were due a heavy loss, come a week early imo.. typical how we build abit of momentum then vlaar gets injured and baker gets a stomach bug, that being said arsenal were there for the taking first half hour, the goal woke them up and we should have taken our chances. Not worrying we got ten points on the board and can take a couple losses. UTV

    P.s sanchez? Oh dear...

  6. To be fair these are the teams we need to be beating in order to seriously challenge for the title.

In all seriousness though, we must be the worst team in the league at keeping the ball having said that another outstanding defensive performance and we would have lost that last season... they spanked spurs 3 nil albeit with there best striker but we limited them to 1 shot on target I think. Brilliant stuff! 3 points is what I predicted for all 4 games so happy days.

  7. Fantasic 3 points! I don't care about the lack of possession, seems to be our system away from home the other team can have as much possession as they want because Were one of the best counter attacking teams in the league. However our defence is absolutely dreadful without vlarr, scary infact. Chuffed for delph, what a brilliant goal and he deserves it

  8. Any team outside the big 5 who do there homewok will gladly allow us to play, stopping our only weapon which is counter attacking, we just dont have the creativity to break teams down, so frustrating to see the ball go back to guzan time and time again. Way too narrow teams find us remarkably easy to defend against. Kozak for such a tall bloke won hardly anything in the air n his touch looks woeful.

Positives.. a clean sheet and a point is still a decent result, and delph is really starting to look like a player. He just lacks that creative pass that we lack, if he can find that then this boy will go far.
