  1. I think turning on the attacking mode as a central midfielder is something you can't teach that easily. Players like NRC got the drive naturally (though lacks in other departments). Petrov got it and it works very well for him as he is both techniqual and has a shot on him. Barry on the other hand doesn't have it. Which is very weird cause he is so good on the ball and are able to make the passes. I really don't know whether it's because Barry is to slow or what, but he clearly doesn't have the drive forward, and he nearly never ever takes a shot despite having a pair of cracking feet (in a non-sexual way :) )

  2. Quote:

we have that player in Barry, the player that currently plays that role for OUR national side. If he's good enough to do it for England then he's sure as **** good enough to do it for us

If you think Barry is that sort of player I really wonder if you've seen him play at all. He doesn't do it for England, and he doesn't do it for us.

Plays a quite different role for England alongside either Lampard or Gerrard and compliments those players and generally plays well and is an obvious favorite for Capello. As we know here he plays alongside Petrov, NRC, Sidwell, Gardner or Salifou and has been our most consistant player over the past three years. We will miss him and I would rather Petrov left and we partnered Barry with a better quality player but that looks unlikely.

And that's also why you never see any steel and muscle in the England midfield when it's called for. It's a totally different game in the internationals facing shit opposition. What you want is a Mascherano/Keane/Vieira and Petrov does this for us. And that's something Gareth Barry simply isn't capable of.

  4. Personally I think Petrov offers more both offensively and defensively then Barry ever does. Petrov can make the passes, intercept passes, tackle, dribble, shoot. Barry is a luxury player IMO. Good on the ball, smooth passes, inept at tackling, hardly takes a shot, slow movement forward. Simply isn't aggressive enough going forward to hold the role. Good captain, excellent penalty taker, but all in all he won't be the loss some people claim.

I've got an even better idea. Keep Barry, our England regular and best player and replace Petrov with a class box to box midfielder

Barry cna then do his England role for Villa and we'd be better straight away

Wouldn't work. Barry can't tackle and is quite shit at doing general defensive dirty work. He would be great in a 3 man 4-5-1 midfield, but we won't play that.

  5. Our two best players in terms of ability and consistency are Martin Laursen and Gareth Barry. Then comes Ashely Young but he can drift out of games for 2 months.

If we lose Barry and Laursen I would conclude that we will not be able to sustain the same challenge as this season, no matter who replaces them.

I think MON will never be able to replace the two.

Couldn't agree more. When evaluating O'Neills tenure, Laursen and Barry are the players who have performed the most consistently and have formed the spine of the team

And they both were very average before MON arrived. MON made them into the players people believe they are now.

Gareth Barry, Mr Aston Villa. Gareth Barry who was a nobody for ages. Gareth Barry who tried to jump ship to spurs around year 2000. Gareth Barry who tried to jump ship to pompey. Gareth Barry who was made captain and tried to jump ship to Liverpool at first possible opportunity. Just leave.

  6. That makes no sense. The referee's are there as an authourity figure. They are will have bad days just as any other, but that doesn't excuse the players for their action. It's more or less impossible to go through a match as a referee without making mistakes. This one had a bad day alright, but if you take the players side on this you shit on referees in general.

There are rules to be followed and if you don't there must be consequences. You might feel done by the police at times. Maybe you didn't deserve the fine or the "pipe down speech", but ultimatly it's not accepted by you to verbally harass him. And so it must be.

  7. Action needs to be taken against Ballack, Drogba, Boswinga. It's hard enough finding enough decent ref's these days and it won't get easier when you are allowed to treat referees like this. Lengthy bans and fines should be enforced.

And John Terry shows how much of a captain he is when he stands by it and completely agrees with the outbursts.

Hiddink dropped in my estimation as well. Could done without his petty attack on the ref.

  8. Nah they just got to play on Chelsea's discipline. Keep passing the ball until space is uncovered or a run is made. If they do this they will get chances, they just gotta be able to take them.

Well, they have now gone 135 minutes without really troubling Chelsea so I am not so sure.

Guess you didn't watch the first leg then.

  9. He simply isn't good enough going forward IMO. We need to get a CM with a knack for finding the goal and helping out with runs into the box. You don't see Barry doing this very often, in fact his tri-turn tonight and shot is the first I've seen him do in ages.

Petrov on the other hand is awesome at winning possession. His does his job very well and is superb at tackling. Barry can't tackle for toffee. His pathetic attempt at Kilbane today made me frustrated as ****. It's like he doesn't wanna get his shorts dirty.

If we are going to play 4-5-1 it will be a big blow, but for the 4-4-2 we've seen the last few months he is easy enough to replace.

  10. nope....

have said it since last summer that he could be easily replaced by anyone with a bit of composure, and neat sideways passing...

add some creativity and a bit of pace to the above, and we have improved on him...

if we got anything over 8 mil for him, with a year left on his contract, then we will have mugged whoever is stupid enough to pay it...

Wouldn't really say they have been mugged, but a £ 10 Mill is a good price IMO.

Thing is, I don't think it will be to hard to replace him with someone who can pass the ball, break up play, add more in the attacking game and even possibly be more of a goal threat. Barry is a good player, but not that good.

But we will miss him at penalties and considering the way we play, having a deadly penalty taker is worth it's weight in gold.

The question is how much are we willing to fork out for a replacement?

  11. I found it a bit funny they lost him to injury today. Several Everton forums have said a lot of shit at Laursen and his retirement struggle the last few days. They almost had it coming.
