To be fair to Bournemouth, they had a deal with Villa whereby we had to match the highest bidder to get Mings. They're probably holding out on a bidding war in order to ramp his price up before letting him go.
I had a similar chat with my old man earlier...seems most likely to me they are asking for a fee Villa deem too high, trying to take advantage of the fact they know our fans desperately want him, and it could cause friction if we don’t get him. They are now our rivals after all. I think later in the window they will soften their stance if no one bids what they want.

For me it was all down to Richards. My memory is of him being out of position for a huge number of goals. Never a CB. What a disaster. Worst signing ever along with the other dozen...
Replacing Benteke with Gestede didn't help either. What a terrible idea.
When the right side of your defence is Richards and Hutton, you kinda have to expect significant positioning issues! I couldn’t bare to watch us that season, so so bad

Guess there must be a really sense of pride playing for them. Like representing your Nation.
Yeah it is a bit like that with Athletic. Not everyone sticks around of course but the vast majority wouldn’t leave unless they had to

He has a €88m release clause and Liverpool rumored to be after him
We won't be after him but he is who i think other chap was talking about earlier on due to our Spanish connection we have.
Anyone suggesting Inaki Williams is going anywhere does not know a great deal about Inaki Williams. He’s an Athletic Club lifer, won’t leave and as said as such multiple times

A friend of mine is Uruguayan, and I sent him a text about Villa's purported interest in Gomez and his response was simply "do it now because they won't be able to afford him in a few more years."
Yeah sounds about right! He’s the type of player who can do everything. I doubt we will get him but if we did I’d be so impressed

Maxi Gomez is a football manager superstar so guaranteed fan madness around this one! He has also been a clearly gifted player in La liga last couple of seasons too so anyone who watches Spanish football on the regular will be excited, but I wouldn’t consider his reputation one england to be that wide ranging...eg he’s not really played the national team or English clubs in European competition in recent years for people to really know much about him.
for me personally, I play FM largely with Spanish clubs and also watch highlights each week and live games fairly often so I’ve seen him a fair bit across both! Right attributes for the premier league for sure, very exciting link but I considered him beyond us...if the link is true, regardless of whether we get him or not, it shows the level we are looking at is very high

Don't all players in Spain have a buy-out clause written into their contracts by law? Wonder what his is....
A slightly random aside as it’s very unusual, but it’s actually possible the player can choose not to have a release clause, although it’s rare. A few Athletic Club players have done this in the past 12 months to show their loyalty to the club

Maxi Gomez the first properly exciting transfer link I’ve seen thus far. This would be a massive statement of intent

Imagine this will be announced today, seems like they will have spend the weekend working on the media side of things.
More likely the media team will have had the weekend doing weekend things and not working! Or I hope so anyway for their sake.

Absolutely. I'm not sure we'd have gone up if we had kept Nyland in goal.
There certainly would have been a lot of uncertainty dealing with crosses but I did think Nyland was looking better prior to his injury. Equally Kalinic, who I really thought would do well wasn’t really an improvement. Steer did great coming down the stretch but not sold on him as premier league keeper, but thought he did well enough to deserve a shot, with Kalinic hopefully coming good.
If there’s a bigger issue with Kalinic perhaps, eg not settling or a personal issue, perhaps moving things now makes more sense

I would have thought that would be a lower priority! Hard to imagine we would do that unless we get money back on Nyland or Kalinic

Hey there,
Long time lurker, finally decided to create a log in and start contributing. Born and raised in Birmingham just a short distance from Villa Park, I now live in the South Island of New Zealand supporting Villa from afar, I'm 33 now and have lived here for 13 years for the most part, but still get down to VP at any opportunity when visiting family in the UK.
Massive football fan generally but of course Villa is my passion - I grew up with a season ticket in the Holte for most of my youth, but work took me far away. Now I have to settle for watching on the TV or by whatever other means I can manage, which often includes staying up through the night.
Can't wait for the new season to start to be able to enjoy watching us on MOTD again, and being able to get easier access to our games! When in the Championship, it's definitely tough supporting from overseas.
Look forward to getting involved on the forum.
