Isn't it also the basis for part of the carving up of cash? Higher coefficient, more money. One of the obscured changes aimed at shoring up the established 'elite'

The coefficient used in the league stage is the 5 year club coefficient, while the coefficient used for the non-European value pillar (see: https://editorial.uefa.com/resources/028b-1a7880138a24-7a993e2e33d1-1000/20240322_circular_2024_13_en.pdf) is the 10 year club coefficient. But the non-European part is only 25% of the total value pillar, and since our coefficient is very low, we would end up with peanuts.

We should get a good portion of the European value pillar, since I believe England is ranked as number 1 media contributor. That would give us something like €31 millions, only the 3 other English teams will get more than us.

I don’t think that’s true anymore. Almost certain they changed it to being only coefficient based for who is in each pot. Given the pot you’re in doesn’t give you a more favourable draw anymore I guess they figured there was no need to reserve two spots in pot one for the CL and EL winners.

Yes, you are correct, only the CL winner now gets a reserved spot in pot 1.

Still Bayer Leverkusen will overtake Barcelona in the coefficient ranking as long as they don’t lose the EL final after 90 minutes. Meaning Bayer Leverkusen is most likely to end up in pot 1 and Barcelona in pot 2.

There was talk yesterday on a podcast that some Champions League games will be played on a Thursday as well next year due to the new format? I’m guessing due to TV rights etc, they can’t squeeze them all in over two days? Not sure if that talk has any truth to it though.

There will be played Champions League on one Thursday, 19th September. Each of the 3 UEFA completions will have their own special week, where the two other competitions aren’t played. For CL that week is the 17th to 19th September.  The week after 25th to 26th September is for Europa League only. And Conference League get their dedicated week on 19th December.

Thank you for this. Just one quick question, are we 100% sure that we can’t face another Premier League side?

    Short answer: Yes.

The rules for the draw are that teams from the same country cannot be drawn against each other and a team can only be drawn against max two teams from one country. In other word we cannot be drawn against an other English team and we can be drawn against three Spanish teams, as an example.

Then there is a rule that say that if there is a scheduling deadlock, the two previous rules can be overruled and that can result in two teams from the same country getting drawn against each other.

The condition for this is that there are too many teams from the same country in the same pot (think 4 or more teams). In other words it do not apply to England.

If Bayer Leverkusen win the European League final, Germany will have 4 teams in pot 1. That would put some challenges on the draw to avoid scheduling deadlock.

Projected pots. We'd play 2 from each. I'd LOVE Bayern, Barca, Juve, Milan, Sporting, PSV, Monaco and Sturm Graz

Barcelona will end up in pot 2, because the winner of the Europa League final will be moved into pot 1, most likely Bayer Leverkusen.

Our club, 2 years ago our best player sold for 100m how did that turn out?

Months later the manager got sacked, and the club went from mid table to relegation candidate.

UEFA try and avoid it, but it is more likely, as we will have 4 English teams in the competition.

I have looked into this some more, and I’m now 100% certain that we will not be drawn against an other English club.

Most media outlets have reported that there is a small possibility that teams from the same association could be drawn against each other for association with 4 or more teams. What UEFA actually said was that associations with too many teams in one pot could be drawn against each other to avoid scheduling deadlock, and that only apply to associations with four or more teams.

Since England have two teams in pot 1, one team in pot 2 and one team in pot 4, it does not apply to us, we do not have too many teams in a pot.

Germany could potentially end up with 4 teams in pot 1, but even then UEFA believes that they can avoid drawing two German teams against each other.

The rumour mills will link us to all sorts now so we'll see every name under the sun this summer. Hopefully the club keep doing their business quietly and competently.

They even have us bringing back a player from Saudi in tomorrows page.  Might need a serious cut to his current wages 😅

Gabri Veiga; rumour from givemesport.com, so not very reliable. And according to givemesport.com he is more likely to sign for Atletico Madrid.

They have an other rumour on their website, that we are after left back Bradley Locko. I’m considering if having “Locko” on the back of my shirt would be nice.

Yes, according to the below, one of our 8 games in the league phase can be against an English team.

    https://www.espn.co.uk/football/story/_/id/37628341/champions-league-revamp-how-competition-work

Here are the UEFA rules: https://documents.uefa.com/r/Regulations-of-the-UEFA-Champions-League-2024/25/Article-16-Draw-system-league-phase-Online

Article 16.02 - says that in principle we shouldn’t be drawn against an other English team.

Article 16.03 - says that UEFA can change the draw rules if they decide it is needed.

My take it is that it is very very unlikely we will be drawn against an other English team. I would expect that if a deadlock occurred, it is more likely that we would see two Italian or German team drawn against each other, since they have 5 teams in the competition.

The way I understand the draw will take place, is that a person will pick a ball with the name of a team, then a computer software will take over and select the opponent’s for that team. I’m sure that the software will be built to avoid deadlocks that could result in two teams from the same league are drawn against each other. However, this is the first time they are doing this complex draw, and 16.03 is just there if things get too messed up.

I'd like Real Madrid, PSG, Benfica and Brugge away.

Celtic, Sturm Graz, Galatasaray and Copenhagen at home.

It's going to be a great ride that's for sure.

Not possible. One team from each of the 4 pots at home and a different team from each of the 4 pots away.

We could have PSG at home and Real Madrid away, since both teams are in pot 1, but we cannot have both teams away.

How does the new league phase work? And how are our chances of facing an elite side? E.g. Real/Bayern/PSG.

There will be 4 pots of 9 teams, ranked by the UEFA club coefficient.

Each team will be drawn against two teams in each pot, and play one of them at home and one away.

The teams in pot 1 are all what could be called elite sides, meaning we will at least playing two elite sides.

Same again but less teams. Might only be six if Man. United win the FA cup.

There will be 7 English teams. If ManU win the FA cup they will get a spot in the Europa League together with Spurs and 6th in the League get Conference League.

Seeing the Spurs fan celebrating the City goals was baffling to me. It seems so petty and pathetic. I know it wasn't all Spurs fans (just a small minority) but it's a terrible look on the club.

Let’s hope that we never get into a situation where a Villa win would hand the title to Birmingham.

No one is doing the job for us.

Every team played every team. The table doesn't lie. If we qualify it's because of what we've done, not another team doing us a favour.

We've beaten Man City. If Spurs what to finish ahead of us they've got to do the same.

They've got to try and match what we've already done. City aren't helping us, we helped ourselves.

You aren’t wrong, but you are writing this in most popular tread on VillaTalk at the moment, and the tread have nothing to with Villa, except it’s all about an other team doing us a favour.

You see Bailey (and others) playing though the pain barrier and then this guy going off at any given opportunity.

    Levels.

Not all players are like Bert Trautmann.
But seriously, there are different level of injuries some minor injuries would allow a player to continue to play without risking further complications. Other injuries means a player has to heal the injury before playing again.
What is your view on Mings? Is he unprofessional and not committed to Villa since he have taken the year off?

A draw doesn't really change anything other than to rule-out the goal-difference element, which is very unlikely after they stuttered past Burnley.

We have to put everything into this.

We can do it if VP is rocking.

A draw do change the following:

    1. Spurs need to win both remaining matches, a draw and a win + overcome goal difference would no longer be enough.
    2. We would still be at +20 goal difference, meaning Spurs still needs to improve their goal difference with 8 goals.
    3. If Spurs beat ManC, an other draw against Crystal Palace could be enough to keep 4th, depending on goal difference.

But since ManC would trash Spurs, you are right our results wouldn’t change anything.

  19. We have 3 opportunities to qualify for Champions League before the last game of the season;

    Saturday: Burnley to beat Spurs

    Monday: Us to beat Liverpool

Tuesday: ManC to beat Spurs, in addition if Spurs drew against Burnley an other draw against ManC will see us in 4th spot.

In addition if we draw against Liverpool, we will qualify if Spurs don’t win both matches against Burnley and ManC.

I’m pretty confident we have qualified before we play Crystal Palace.

Most likely it will be Burnley that brings us over the line, the blueprint on how to beat Spurs is now well known, giving Burnley an excellent chance to get a vital result in their relegation battle.

Spurs really should be better than they are right now. It's not like they have genuine reasons to be struggling like us

Our most used players have played 10-20 games more than the most used Spurs players, in that sense you are right.

However, Spurs play a high intensity tactic with a high press, while we have a more low/medium intensity tactic.

The result seems to be that both set of players are burned out at this stage in the season.

Next season with Spurs in Europe, their players will be burned out at an earlier stage in the season, expect them to be mid table.

We need to recruit well in the summer, because it is not sustainable that our best players play 50+ matches in a season. Both because burn out at the end of the season and also to avoid injuries because of fatigue and tiredness.
