Lots of speculation that we’re signing him for 12m.

Seems a strange one for a 32 year old but they obviously see him as first choice LB for 2/3 seasons.

    Or its bollocks.

There isn't lots of speculation. There's very little really and it's your standard rehash speculation because he recently spoke about nearly joining Villa last summer. So it jumps back into the news cycle.

Many others have answered this much better than I can already - but for what it's worth....

Being 20th in anything in the league doesn't mean we're the worst, it just means we a lot different in our approach to other teams, and with respect, teams we've probably beaten this season.

There's a widely "expected" way for the top clubs to play, and although I think most of what we do is similar, there's also a lot different. Klopp's Liverpool have always been high intensity, high pressing. City similar but a lot of possession play too. Arsenal I haven't seen enough of. But Unai doesn't have just one way to play, every game there are subtle nuances to match the opposition we're playing.

At the end of the day, I'd be quite happy being 20th in all the stats and finishing 4th, than being top of all the stats and finishing 17th.

The stats just describe how we play.

We do not press in the final third we move to a mid block and force opponents wide and that triggers our press in mid third. We have a very high line which compresses the filed and means there is less ground to cover, so no high press and very high line means short distances between players and less running. Hence we are low on distance covered. The aim is to win possession back via offside or via pressing in mid third when opponents try play through us. When in low block the team focus on keeping structure and the spaces between the players and not try to press to get the ball back as that opens up space.

It's clearly visible this is our tactical approach and it worked very well. What is really interesting is how we adapt tactically for the opposition, for example at home to City we had a high press game which caught them out. Emery knew we can't allow city free time to build up as they will control the game and pick us apart eventually. Then for Bournemouth who go man to man press we sat much deeper so as to draw them onto us and create space behind them to counter through via direct and quick play.

This is Emery, have a team capable of different tactical game plans depending on situations and opponent. What he needs to execute it is a deep squad with the different attributes and profiles. We need those players to remain fit also as our form dropped off last season as our injuries mounted.

I think we will see more high press added to the game plan next season with the right personnel added. It is the added skill needed to control and dominate the lower teams more than we have last season.

I can't wait to see Emery next tactical evolution. I think we might see us adding more attacking width and we will need to improve our defensive approach also.

They might be able to renegotiate Phil's contract so his salary is reduced to the amount Vasco can afford then we loan him to them with agreement that they will pay 100% of his wages. That would potentially avoid the FFP hit.

That's what Coutinho did to join us. He took a wages cut. I think we'll negotiate something similar where we fund maybe £1m of wages Vasco cover £4m and he takes £2m cut himself.

It does do something for PSR/FFP. The permitted loses of 35 mill per year are permitted only if they are funded in that way. If they are not funded by owner equity injection, the story changes, IIRC.

This is correct, allowable loss is £5m per year but £35m if owners find the £30m via capital injection

OK, I'm not an accountant but I don't think there's anything wrong with the below scenario:

Our accounting period was extended to 30th June, but sale of season tickets for 24/25 starts as usual on 1st of June which is now still in this accounting period. What stops us from booking this revenue in this accounting period? The product is sold now, does it matter when it's "consumed"?

If this is allowed, we could add this June's revenue to last June's season ticket revenue thus giving us an one off boost for PSR purposes.

This is perfectly allowable. It's why PSR is over 3 years as you take from one period to give to another.

Unless he is so desperate to play for Vasco and so is also prepared to terminate the current contract.  In which case we take an £8.5m loss on his book value but save £7m in wages.  Suddenly a £1.5m loss doesn't seem so bad.  We could even give him 3 months pay and it still be a very satisfactory outcome.

Well the season just gone his wages were covered and so only cost us 4.25m. We could find a Loan for him where his wages are again covered (or he agrees to lower them). Then we agree at the end of that his contract terminated by mutual consent. Structure it like that.

  7. I think an outright termination is unlikely as the FFP hit will be too much.

He's 8.5m left in book value so that would be booked as a loss instead of 4.25m and 4.25m in the following season.

His salary is £7m per season and he would want some financial settlement on that also.

Wonder if he's considered he'll be behind Nkunku and Jackson at Chelsea.

He won't be. He'll be able to get ahead of Jackson and Nkunku isnt a 9. He's played 12 times in his career as CF

Quite a big ask to sell 300,000 shirts per season. Think we sold around 175,000 in 22/23. Obviously increased exposure due to CL will boost sales, plus Adidas it a big pull in itself.

Shirts available much wider now with Adidas stores and distribution

Not sure about that, but either way, I think he is referring to the rumoured threshold we need to meet to get bonus payment of up to 10 mill per year from Adidas.

    Allegedley 300,000 shirts

Bonus payment might be true. But in general it's not that we make X per shirt sold. That's not how the deals are structured.

Pretty much this.  Players of Duran's age grew up with Chelsea being one of the very best teams in the world for a long time, it's why the like of Caicedo went there instead of Liverpool.

Duran wants to play football. It's that simple and he's not happy being stuck behind a player like Watkins who is always fit, always in form and never seems to even tire.

Chelsea plan is to sign the best young players on long contracts and allow them all to grow together into a top side. He fits that mould

  12. I've a feeling we might take a risk this window in how we get our players in. We'll sign players early which push us over PSR next season and back ourselves to shift the players we need to balance the books. We always have break glass in case of emergency players like JJ and Luiz who we can sell in August or next June to stay under PSR.

We can always sell Bodymoor heath to ourselves to avoid any points penalty of it came to it.

I'd go hot into the season and look to bring funds in Jan or next June

His woek rate is phenomenal ans he ran the show at VP.

Id definitely take him and cundy reckons he will be sold. But i cant see us signing him and barkley. Its one or the other.

    Chelsea will want about 50-60m

Id personally sell them duran if it means we can get gallagher

I disagree I think we absolutely need two CMs. We've lost Kamara, we're selling Donk and Tim. Two is an absolute must as we use McGinn and Tielemans in non CM positions and we've overused the CMs we've got.

Gallagher will probably cost 10 times that much and probably triple or quadruple the wages.

We need two CMs added. Kamara is out and no idea level he can perform at in the first few months back. In planning terms we are planning as if we don't have him for next season

Luiz, Tielemans, Barkley, Gallagher, McGinn that works as a group of CMs. Especially as a few of them can play Second Striker and one of the wide midfielders who become a narrow 10.

That much?? I wouldnt bother. Id rather sell a player and try get gallagher instead

It won't be that much or anywhere near it. It'll be a nominal fee like £1m or less.

  16. The way I always view this is through the financial cost / benefit. We have literally a set squad cost and every player has an annual cost which takes a piece of the squad cost pie.

A player like Dendonker costs us about £8m per season in amortisation + wages. Chambers costs us around £2.6m.

If we double Barkley's wage he'll cost us ~ £3.1 a season. I am sure the club know plenty about his attitude and he must've been a positive presence in the dressing room last time and I'm sure he was a big influence at Luton.

So when you see a player like this available, knows the League, knows the club and half our first team, has shown high level and the data backs it all up. Cost is small so downside is small. It makes a lot of sense.

I think the club correctly have the view, yes we can take experienced older players but they need to be on free transfers or small fee's.
