Yes. His goals this season have directly earned Spuds 8 points. Without those points they are 10th
What a stupid argument.
You don't just take out his goals and say 'this is where they'd be'....it doesn't work like that.
-
Why? He has scored eight goals in the cups. Well done him. They still win football matches.
4 goals against Port Vale, Milton Keynes and Southend...
...SIGN HIM UP!!!!
-
i disagree, i think you can't really judge a players goal/games because defoe has come on for the last 10 minutes quite a few times this season and it's hardly fair to expect him to score.
You might not like it, but it's how all players are judged. It's always done on how many goals have been scored in a total amount of appearances.
-
What about considering who earned the penalties?
What about a striker with 24 goals all season, all penalties and all 1-0 wins?
Are they not effective?
Would you want to sign a striker who only scored penalties in a season?
-
Id be delighted if we managed to qualify for Europe or champions league.
You trying to imply that he's the reason Spurs are in europe?
What if he scored 10 in 34? And the three penalties earned us the 9 points needed for Champions league qualification.
Good god, sense of perspective required
I don't think he'd take penalties at Villa for a start.
And then if he matched his tally from open play at Spurs and scored 7 for us, I'd be disappointed. Gabby has 9 goals and he's played on the right wing for most of the season!
-
WTF.
And two of those 7 were tap ins, and 3 of the remaining 5 should have been offside and the remaining two he fouled the defender on the run in.
Goals scored are goals scored I am afraid not matter how he gets them, you cannot discount them for being penalties.
We've got Barry to take penalties.
If Defoe came here for big money and scored 7 goals in 34 appearances, I'd be very. very disappointed.
-
If I can move the goalposts a bit...
3 of Defoe's 10 goals have been penalties..
Only 7 goals from open play in 34 appearances.....
-
It's 10 goals in 34.
No strikers record has ever been goals/starts.
You do it based on overall appearances, let's not move the goalposts to make Defoe look better than he is.

Makelele's probably available for a club of the stature of Villa now. He's slowly been pushed out of the Chelsea team.
Much like when it was unthinkable Davids would ever join a club like Spurs, age took it's toll and then it became viable.
-
We won't play with an anchor like Makelele.
We don't have the players in front of him to it beneficial. And I think picking Makelele almost forces the hand in terms of 4 - 5 - 1, which I don't want to see us play.
I'd rather see us sign a better aged, box to box midfielder than a declining holding midfielder.
-
Yes, he gives you the luxury of controlling the midfield.
No, he gives you the luxury of letting your world class players do their thing.
He'd be wasted in the same way Mascherano was at West Ham.
-
Makelele is a luxury player.
We can't have luxury players.

Dinamo Bucharest! If he can score against a european powerhouse like that, he must be good.
I think his goal against Sevilla was after he come on as a sub. Appearances as sub don't count, so goals as a sub don't count either. :winkold:
