Can’t agree with this. We’ve been monumentally unlucky tonight and we were by miles and miles the better team against Brentford for 75 mins.

on another day we’d be winning the last two games and on a high.

results will come, signings for fine tuning will help.

Maybe im misremembering the Brentford game then because i thought we we're rubbish in that. I dont think you can consistently not take your chances against teams you are dominating and claim bad luck either. We are in serious need of quality in multiple positions imo and i think the last few weeks have proven that.

I really think some people need to rewatch the match and focus on one player because Buendia on the whole was one of our top 5 tonight

I literally just watched the entire game not 30 minutes ago. In my opinion he had 4-5 moments but was pretty poor generally, its fine if you disagree with that but i dont need a rewatch.

  3. Its moments like the half arsed press on Dias for his goal that just makes it hard to like a player. Show some effort ffs. Nothing worse than someone who doesn't look arsed,

I like the cut of his jib. Humble, down to earth considering his prominence in the game. Focussed on improving, asking for more whilst also praising what we have. Very good. The standard of play has improved very quickly, far more organised, more fluidity going forward. The last 6-9 months under Deano we've looked like jigsaw pieces scattered all over whether we win, lose or draw.

He's seemingly very focussed on shapes and having us move as a team. I don't want to jinx things but even if we lose against City, I don't expect it to be absolute savagery. That said, he's also learning and coming up against a better standard of manager now.

Yea i'm not getting carried away with the good start without sounding like a miserable sod but you also get the feeling that he isnt either which is encouraging. Knows theres work to do and still things to prove in the long term.

Maybe! I’d need to see more evidence of that over more games.  We conceded less shots than usual which is a massive positive.  Watching it though I wasn’t convinced we were more disciplined, there was still a few hairy moments that has become common place and a different day would’ve been punished.  I did feel we tried to play more through the middle but I thought our attacking play, especially early second half was far more sloppy than usual as players weren’t on the same page.  The subs made the difference without doubt.

To be honest, it’s difficult to take any analysis from this game.  First game for new manager, players trying to impress which has negatives because over trying and positives because they try harder.  The opposition also has to be taken into account and also half of these players today have only had a couple of days with Gerrard and his coaching team so hardly enough to make too much difference.

We won, a good day at the office and that’s what I’m happy about tonight.  I’ll reflect more on this game after we have played some more games so there is a bigger dataset to look at.

Plus he pretty much stated that the first few games would be temporary tactics to stop the rot before he can impose his ideas or something basically to that effect. Definitely not getting too carried away or downbeat off one game had we lost, need a bigger sample size to see his true impact.

That is mad, i honestly thought he had joined last year 🤨

he has a good 4 years to go of zero appearances and ending up with zero return on investment before thats even a discussion!

Well he's been here 18 months and played about 45 minutes so he's off to a good start atleast.

  8. On the subject of Smith though, dont really know what to expect from him at Norwich, he had a lot of money and did a good job overall here but theres definite question marks over some big chunks of his time here. Really hope Gerrard isnt a disaster and we dont swap places with Norwich leaving Smith looking smug :D

Not a chance mate! A lot of those are level with us or less.  The amount of pull the PL has and money.

Football fans are mental man :D I love Villa as much as anyone but were aren't bigger or even close to most of those teams listed.

I'm all game about clever free kicks and corners but watching Matty Cash run to left wing to take a throwing to the edge of the box is an absolute joke and I hope the new gaffer tells him to pack it in

Agree with this. Good set pieces is obviously very important but we just seemed to go mental with it. Do a long throw once in a while by all means but watching us do it every time we got a throw in anyway near their 3rd was so painful.

When we appointed Smith he hadn't achieved much, no more than plenty of other championship managers have achieved at similar sized Championship clubs, but was still a good fit as there's so much more to take into consideration when selecting a manager.

You could appoint a champions league winning manager and it'd still be a gamble because of so many variables tbf. I dont think its possible to appoint a manager and it not be a risk. Not saying he would have been my first choice but its atleast an interesting gamble. You also have to remember its a huge gamble for him too so hes obviously not afraid of a challenge.
