  1. I remember the first time I saw a guardiola team play in the late noughties. It was like watching football from the future. Teams like ferguson’s united, mourinho’s Chelsea (albeit under Grant) and wenger’s arsenal, who were used to bullying PL teams, were thoroughly bullied by a Barca team that gave them no time on the ball and dominated in all areas of the pitch.

Now admittedly, the City side we played last night were not as good as that Barca side, not least cause of the number of injuries. But it still blows my mind to think that we completely dominated them last night

  2. He’s a bit overrated isn’t he. Dont get me wrong the stats don’t lie and he is an unbelievable goal scorer. But if you asked the average city fan if they’d rather he was suspended or Rodri for tonight’s game they’d have said haaland

  3. I’d completely written him off and clearly wasn’t the only one. His improvement in performances over the last couple of months might be the most dramatic I’ve seen of any Villa player

Only just seen MOTD 2, but I thought the same - totally hypocritical!
Also, Jenas complaining afterwards that the VAR was unduly influencing the ref by telling him to specifically look at the feet for contact: Surely that's what the technology is FOR - showing the referee something they may have missed in real-time. Personally I think that Milner did take out Mudryk's ankles as well as shoving him so it should be a penalty, regardless of whether Steele was likely to get to the ball first or not. I know that officiating is in a bad way, but all the discussion now seems to start from the perspective of 'VAR is 100% bad for the game - prove me wrong'. I don't think it's helping the situation.

Yeah this whole section was bizarre. They were also blasting VAR for having the temerity to show the clip in slow motion. Shock horror

We were 8 points behind the leader Man U in week 25, unfortunately that was a high point, and by week 25 we were 13 points behind. We slipped further away in the coming weeks (21 points behind by Week 32), and finished the season 27 points behind Man U, who won.

So that means united finished with 89 points which would only be 11 points higher than our implied end season standing this year based on 2.1 ppg so far. With a 78 points total, which we’re on course for at this rate under emery, we’d have comfortably finished 4th that year (actual finish was 6th)

We were 3rd in the league after 25 games in 08/09.

You might not classify that as an abortive title challenge (I would), but it's still patently better than being 4th after 14 games.

Selective memory doesn't come into it - merely facts.

This is not the best season in living memory and you are the one with the defective memory if you think so. Laughable.

How many points did we have at that point? Genuine question as I can’t find the stats.

i looked at the final standings and we had 62 points after 38 games which is 1.6 ppg vs 2.1ppg so far this season. If we continue that form we finish the season with 78 points. How’s your maths? Does that sound good enough for you?

More generally, I’ve no problem with you thinking 08/09 was the time of your life- you go for it mate. But don’t piss on other people on this forum’s parade for having the temerity to enjoy what’s going on under emery. Maybe you an I will meet one day in 10 years and you’ll tell me glowingly how amazing life was under O’Neill and I’ll argue that it was better under emery. Who knows who will be right but I have a suspicion it won’t be you

Yes, living memory was OTT obviously  - I meant recent memory. My complaint about the reactions thread is that virtually everyone was saying the same thing, about how “poor” we were.. I was trying to put a different perspective.

Don’t apologise mate- some people think it’s a crime to be positive on these forums

The best season in living memory? What are you, 10 years old?

We've finished top 2 in my lifetime. Top 4 more recently. We've won cups. Mounted (albeit abortive and unlikely) title challenges until January time under Gregory and O'Neill.

Unai is undoubtedly a fantastic manager that we're lucky to have, and there is plenty to be positive about. But telling people who are disappointed with today's performance that it's the best season in living memory, on the 3rd of December after 14 matches, the day of a 2-2 draw with Bournemouth, is pathetic.

We never mounted “title challenges” under O’Neill so your memory is very much selective.

Im 32 and this is the best season in my living memory so far- sorry if that offends you

If it wasn't sourced I wouldn't post, I doubt many would.

    Sky Sports News this morning!

Very true but as we’ve seen from this thread, the source can vary in quality from SSN to some guy hanging out in the priory’s bathroom

Southgate is by a million miles the best England manager in my life time and I'm an old bugger. His success in moving England to the very fringes of winning major trophies deserves respect.

As for Maguire, no matter how poor he is at United, he never lets England down and is not only a rock at the back but our biggest aerial threat from set pieces.

Some links for your consideration in case you need help with the definition of “letting England down”:

  11. Luton was my first game at VP and he impressed me the most- better than expected in person. Classy on the ball but also noticeable how many individual fuels he won as well which was more surprising

  12. If I’m calculating right (excuse the pun) the only right footed signing emery has made so far has been tielemans - and he was on a free so clearly we don’t like paying money for right footers(!)

Spurs flatter to please - they’ve had a very favourable fixture list and kept injury free. The Arsenal win was impressive, but the real tests will come.

They drew with arsenal. And they were very lucky to beat Liverpool given the wrongly disallowed Luiz goal and Liverpool only conceding in the last minute. Lose that game and they’re basically bang in line with us in the table having played significantly easier fixtures
