In fairness, had we gone for the win we'd probably have ended up with no points. A point is a small step forward. I don't think points are enough, but I'm not expecting miracles either.

Garde, and the team, are making steps in the right direction, although they are small steps. I've accepted he won't be able to keep us up now, so credible draws or going all out for wins is all academic really.

Me too we are down as far as I can see. However be nice to go down fighting. You can say let's build on the point but look what happened after the point vs city. Battered and back to square one with no confidence etc. It could be a very embarrassing season with records all broken for all the wrong reasons

Sanchez was the worst player on the pitch by far, IMO.

Lots of passes directly to Southampton players, and he should have been watching his man for their goal. I can only assume he won MotM for services to comedy in football.

Totally agree his passing is Sunday league at best and his man scored for goal. Go 442 and **** him off

  3. Mistake again for Guzan who has cost us several times now. And bad luck. But we're still not showing enough going forward for me we have no width beyond a full back. Gil is more like a no10 than a wide man. If we play gestede we need width and we didn't have it again! Managers poor tactics again.

  4. Don't get it. Play a guy whose not played at all. Play a new formation that clearly isn't gonna work. Not play any creative players. Times running out for Tim and I don't really want him to stay but we keep sacking managers and then getting another and then sacking them, something clearly isn't right at our beloved AVFC.

  5. No blame on Tim from me, we did easily enough to win. Just didn't score (enough).

Richards is so good, I love him. Feel so sorry he didn't score, he would've deserved it.

Sanchez was very good aswell. He made one mistake, got to the wrong side of his man, and boom it's a goal.

Ciaran, I'm sorry to say this but you need some time off. Come back stronger.

Sinclair, Hutton, Amavi, Gana, Westwood all did well.

We need a goal scorer, as we all know. Adama would've won us the game, but we ahould've won it anyway.

I think Grealish would have done more than Adama to win the game, they defended deep so guile would have been more likely to "unlock" them than pace
Jack or Adama. Both in their own way.

Totally agree here. Clark has to wipe the ball and man out when lens takes that touch.

  6. Had enough chances to win the game. Defensively poor again especially first ten mins of each half. Rudy struggled for a big lad. Sinclair Richards and Sanchez all had good games. Sometimes wonder if Sherwood can change it tactically at times as our only width comes from the full backs. 2 points dropped but at least we didn't lose. Must be winning more games at home to stay in the league UTV

  7. Would have taken a point before game but it should certainly have been 3 on Weimanns chance.  We got saints on an off day.  Those of you expecting great football then think again not with the players we have and injuries at mo.  However the points come right now doesnt matter.

Clark/Okore/Hutton decent.  A good positive to take is welcome back Okore.

Be nice to see us play 4-4-2 really dont no whats happened to Charlie, didnt look interested again. UTV

  8. Actually fancy us to get a win here, it's purely law of averages stuff.

We're at home, we are due some kind of performance and they are seriously overdue either a bad performance or bad result. Yes they are much better than us but even the best teams slip up an they are certainly not on man city or Chelsea's level.

Since when have we been good at home???

2 first choice centre backs out then baker. Okore hardly been on bench.

Can only see one result here and it be one for the team in red and white stripes!!

  9.

    Guzan: A brilliant, vital signing

Bowery: A shockingly bad player who cost nothing.

Sylla: A defensive midfielder when we needed one. Speculative purchase, hasn't worked out, didn't cost much.

Westwood: A semi-speculative purchase, has worked out very well, didn't cost much.

Bacuna: Another speculative purchase, has been excellent at times, poor at other times, didn't cost much.

Luna: A speculative purchase when we needed a LB to cover for the developing Bennett, didn't cost much.

Bennett: A speculative purchase, young and promising LB, hasn't worked out so far, but didn't cost much.

Lowton: A RB when we needed one, can't defend too well, but otherwise excellent, didn't cost much.

Steer: A backup goalie when we needed one, cost nothing.

Benteke: Hang on, what's this??? More than 5 million to spend??? Okay, we'll get this guy. A reasonable success?

Vlaar: Wait! a bit more money to spend? Not a fortune. Yes let's get this one too. Success!

Okore: Four million for a defender who was very highly rated and performed brilliantly in pre-season and before his injury. A proper signing coup by Lambert.

Westwood: Hang on, haven't we seen you somewhere before?

El alhmadi: A successful signing for the money we paid, I don't think anyone can really argue with that.

Kozak: Backup striker, 1 in 3 record for us so far: Cost either 7 million (in which case it's a qualified success) or 4 million, (in which case it's a brilliant signing)

    Holt: Loan: Success.

Tonev: A speculative purchase, young and promising winger, hasn't worked out so far, but didn't cost much.

    Bertrand: Loan: Success

Helenius: A speculative purchase, young and promising striker, injured recently, hasn't worked out so far, but he's young and didn't cost much.

    Edited with summary of players.

So about 8 million of the alleged 40 million has been badly spent. Any manager with an 80% success rate in the transfer market deserves a medal, especially when you consider that cheap players are likely to be more of a gamble than expensive ones.

I applaud your positivity but to suggest that Lambert deserves a medal for his transfer dealings really only serves to discredit your wider point. Lamberts signings have been largely appalling and I am seriously worried that we will see more Tonevs and Bennets than Bentekes and Guzans in the next window. I am a Lambert fan but i worry about him in the transfer market. SYLLA FFS!!

I agree you positivity is great but even KEA isnt that good.  Benteke and bertrand for me are good, Westy who I know from school is getting there but even he isnt exactly amazing. Majority signings been made on shoe string budget and thats our problem.  Majority of signing poor. Tonev and Sylla FFS they are terrible.

Could you be more specific about what you actually disagree with?

You can't hang Lambert for three signings when he's signed 18. For a supposed 40 million. That isn't enough money per player for a Premier League side, although we needed numbers as well as quality. Lambert has had to gamble. In some cases he's gambled and lost, as any manager does.

Yes he has lost but he does not learn from these gambles sometimes.  Bennett was terrible last year and Luna came in and was ahead of him, yet hes playing bennett again now!!!!!  Were lacking in senoir players with premier league experience and some serious creativity too.

  11. The injury list again: Benteke; Okore; Delph; Gabby; Kozak; KEA; N'Zogbia.

Every single one arguably a starter. Get a grip everyone.

I agree with you here but there is also the consistent bad home form no matter what team we play and our lack of ability to defend.  Squad and home form needs to be adressed in a massive way if we stay up.

  12. My thoughts today

Started well and yet again lost. According to a book I have just read called the 'Numbers Game' if your side scores first you should almost be guaranteed at least a point. I guess Villa likes to be a bit different. We also seem to have a inverse relationship between the greater possession we have the more likely we drop or lose points. This is a strange side.

Vlaar had a poor game today- if he plays badly we play poorly. He is our most valuable player. Bacuna is good going forwards but can't really defend. Yewunited took their chances and we didn't. We had 10 shots but only 1 on target. Football is a simple game- if you are more efficient in taking your chances than your opponents you win the game- no matter what the football hipsters, sabermetrics geeks and wannabe peps may say.

United are nowhere near a top 4 side and we are nowhere near the top half. We both deserve to be where we are in the table. I would say if we play like this versus Fulham we should win but we all know we will play crap and draw 1-1. Now time to sit in the garden and cool off....

Totally agree here.  We do not show enough consitency in games for defending, scoring and form.  We will prob draw with fulham then rack in 4 goals versus someone we dont expect.  One more win should be enough.

  13. It has to be said, some of our fans are absolute rocket polishers of the highest order. We're 4-1 up and what do some of our fans want to do? Abuse our OWN player Grant Holt by singing a variety of disgraceful and embarrassing songs alluding to the theory that he is fat. I hope to god he didn't hear any of these chants.

    Let's get one thing straight:

GRANT HOLT IS NOT EVEN FAT!!!

    1490410309.jpg

If Grant Holt is fat then 90% of the UK must be obese.

Thick morons. You're better off down the Blues if you have that mentality...

    It's **** cringe-worthy.

Do you think he's in the kind of shape now? He looks fat. And can barely control a football.
a few lads round me were singing it. To be honest we are one of the most cringe worthy fans around. Absolute terrible atmosphere again today even though we won 4.1. Can't stand the holte end anymore

Yet when were away were class! Holt is a waste of space and should never have been signed along with a few others and this is half the fans frustrations and why songs like this are sung I'm afraid

  14. Well that was great fun.

Just wish we'd hurry up bringing in safe standing for some choice of who one gets stuck with - at least on here people only moan at their keyboards it does my head in when it is during the game...........

Clear as day that when we just play we are a decent footballing side, but for some reason - likely nerves and confidence - we too often lump it up to CB.

As soon as we had a little confidence we were away, and the same type of thing - without necessarily as good outcomes- has happened quite a lot this season.

Thought KEA had his best perfromance at VP today.

Totally agree with all have that. Very good point made about when we play we play well. It's must be down to nerves and confidence like u say.

  15. Great 3 points at a much needed time. Thank god we have Benteke. Once we took the lead we actually controlled the game and saw it out which was all we needed to do. Shame we have big teams next but you never know. Hope lambert doesn't mess about with the team now and plays the same team again.

  16. Tactically Lambert got it spot on against Liverpool so I'm unsure why some think he is weak in this area?

Because we rarely play like we did against Liverpool.
And he changed it vs Everton and got it totally wrong!!!! He is forever doing this!!
  17. Our lack of creativity is just frightening and out stats on chances etc is just embarrassing at times. Thomas Ince was a perfect target to get in Jan aswell as another cb. But we didn't and when we don't have vlaar we have no chance it's a simple as that. I like Paul Lambert but at times he gets it so right but then so terribly wrong tactics wise. Were in a scrap again when 3 points today would have kept us just out of it. #pray4villa
