I would have to go for Palace West Ham and Cardiff as things stand but I change my mind all the time. It really is such a close call between so many clubs. I think we have enough in us with more performances like yesterday.

Very pleased with the performance. In all honesty they scored with there only chance in the first half and it took a dive from Suarez for the equaliser. It is hard to critiscise the ref for the pen though as he was clearly conned and my first thought was penalty as well.

I would of taken a point before the game based on both teams form. The performance was good first half, Liverpool did not look like a top 4 team. 2nd half we stood strong after that penalty. I'm sure if we got given a penalty like that we would be saying it was. Personally think Suarez made the contact and went down. Smart play or cheat I say cheat.
Ex pros are deeming it clever play now, can't wait to see lineker and shearer when Suarez does it against England.
That's a great point and I'm sure they will change there tune then

The referee gets one chance so you can not blame him and I have to admit I thought penalty at first but having seen replays I am certain he dives.

See what fans of other clubs don't realise is that Villa fans are the finest in the land.
Let me tell you why. We are a shit club. Not really shit, but generally we get beat by the teams we're supposed to get beat by and rarely cause any sort of excitement for the fans.
We haven't played anything approaching attractive football for absolutely years, decades even.Even though they are mostly shit, the likes of your Newcastles and Spurs put together an entertaining team now and then. .
We 'nearly' do well on occasion, but don't really have much to brag about. I mean, we can brag about the European cup, but even tinpot Chelsea have won that now. We humour fans of successful clubs, who think they know more about football because their club are successful. We know what it is really about. Oh yes.
Pain and suffering.
Feeling like you've wasted your time and money, repeatedly.
Whatever a rival fan can say about our club, we say much, much worse. It's like being a victim of domestic abuse. We know deep down that we absolutely love our club, and yet they beat us repeatedly with a belt and tell us that we're ugly. We always come crawling back though.
We know what football is really like and we...love it?
100% spot on.

Lost there best striker in my opinion but not a bad fee considering he was nearing end of his contract.

Try and stay positive mate. Hope everything comes good.

This lad certainly looks to have a good future, definitely a good idea to see out the season at Notts County and then come back stronger with valuable first team experience under his belt.

Gary Gardner is a strange one. He was so highly rated but Lambert seems reluctant to give him a chance. I know he has not long returned from injury but surely he needs games now, if it's not here then maybe a month's loan elsewhere would be beneficial to everyone. Personally I would give him a chance just to try and give the midfield a different option.

The problem is when we spend big the player has to be a success, when if you compare to the likes Man City and Man Uniteds of this world they can flop. All managers will get it wrong at times.
-
Quite surprised by this, certainly didn't think we'd get a LB this window. Shrewd signing, and who knows, if Chelsea get Luke Shaw in the summer, we could certainly get Bertrand on a permanent deal.
This was one of my first thoughts.

I have to admit I just dont know where to stand on Lerner. I understand the cutbacks but did they need to be so drastic that we cant compete with the lesser clubs in the transfer market? I'm sure it has already been said numerous times but Lerner really needs to let the fans know what the plans are for OUR club.

A View From the Opposition
Arsenal fan in peace, just wanted to give my view on the game.
Even though we've had a pretty decent record at VP over the last 15 years, the games we've had against Villa recently have been very difficult and this proved to be the case yet again last night.
Lambert changing the formation to a 3-5-2 worked well in terms of stifling our play, apart from the minute of craziness which led to us capitalising on your defensive lapses in concentration.
The game started off very slowly and, even before the unfortunate injury to Baker, Arsenal had the lion's share of possession but I never felt we were truly threatening your defence enough. We only had one good chance in the opening 5 minutes, which Giroud should have scored from, from Sagna's cross but for most of the half, I felt Villa coped with us relatively well. You congested the middle and gave us a little more room out wide which actually looked to be working well for you. And as always, when you did get the ball, the pace of Agbonlahor, who gave us a torrid time at The Emirates, proved to be deadly on the counter, as exemplified with Monreal getting booked for a cynical foul on him when his turn of pace proved to be too much for the Spaniard.
Ozil's passing was easy on the eye, but I still question his influence in certain games but I felt it was a quiet night from the German overall. Cazorla, who I felt was our worst player by a mile, was gifting away possession and was frequently forced back due to the pressure from your midfield and closing down his options. Wilshere, in my view, was our best midfield player, as he was the only one in our midfield with the drive and energy to get at Villa and play forward passes to try and penetrate your defence.
Everything was looking comfortable for Villa despite all of the ball we had, but then Lowton had a lapse in concentration when Ozil played an incisive through ball to Monreal whose precise cross was buried into the net by Wilshere. Not the cleanest strike but was accurate enough to go into the bottom corner. The groans around Villa Park said it all and the players seemed to a little shaken up. Arsenal took advantage of Villa seemingly feeling sorry for themselves straight from the kick off, as Wilshere caught Delph dilly-dallying on the ball and played a lofted ball over the top for Giroud to latch onto. The Frenchman's first touch was impeccable, a lucky second touch with the bounce of the knee and a very composed finish to make it 2-0 and made it his 9th of the season, 12 in all competitions.
Villa's hard work to stop us from playing our quick passing game was undone within the space of a minute. Unfortunately for Villa, teams like Arsenal will punish you if you make rookie mistakes.
The second half, Arsenal, as has been an all too familiar story, tried to rest on the 2-0 goal lead and Villa, much to my surprise, tried to give it their all. In certain games this season, Villa have crumbled when they've conceded first, but this didn't look to be the case against the league title contenders. It appeared that Arsenal tried to conserve their energy and see the game out which tends to be our tactic after building a two-goal cushion, but we sat deeper in our own half and we seemed far too casual with our passing which, from our perspective, wasn't professional enough. We didn't play with enough vigour and we weren't pressing your midfield. However, for all of Villa's effort, Szczesny was a spectator for most of the game and it was only where Cazorla's over elegance cost us, as his stray pass was intercepted with ease and Lowton whipped in an inch perfect ball for Benteke to head in from close range. His 6th of the season and a goal which will hopefully do his confidence a world of good, hopefully going into the game against Liverpool at Anfield this week!
From then on, for the final 20 minutes, Villa could smell blood and they searched for an equaliser. Were it not for the composed Koscielny and the height of Mertesacker preventing Benteke on two occasions from scoring taps-ins, Villa surely would have got a point which would have rewarded their hard work.
In the end, it proved to be too little, too late but a chorus of boos at Villa Park was not the case. It was a round of applause for the team spirit to get back into the game.
Villa can take a lot of encouragement from the second half and I have no doubt in my mind that if they can perform like they did in the second half against us for the rest of the season, they will not be near the relegation zone. However, despite having a young side, my own opinion is you need another experienced head at the back. Vlaar was superb (your best player in my opinion) and another central defender with a bit more experience to partner him would really sort out your defensive woes. Lescott, perhaps?
Best of luck for the rest of the season Villa!
This is why I don't mind Arsenal compared to Spurs

A poor midfieder playing in a very poor midfield unfortunately.
-
It is only a loan signing and he did well under Lambert at Norwich. If he comes in, does a job and works hard for our club I have no problem with this short term move.
-
The defeat at the sty and then the follow up at home. Truly depressing as it just had never seemed possible.
-
He looked like a big weight had been lifted from his shoulders when he scored. Such a shame he didn't equalise at the end with that chance.
-
It is hardly an inspiring signing but its just a loan and in his one season under Lambert he did well. I just hope to god this isn't where our business ends.

Put a great ball in for Benteke's goal but has to do better defensively.
-
A lot better in the second half. There was at glimpses of fight within our side. Its such a pity it took us to be 2 down and a whole half of just admiring Arsenal before we had a go.

Ok, second try at this. I am obviously not gary shaw, my name is Steve and I am a life long fan born and raised in our fine city of Birmingham. I have been a season ticket holder for nearly 30 years and probably shouldnt be joining here as it will give me chance to talk about Aston Villa even more than I do already. I hope this is good enough this time and I look forward to contributing to the site. If not I may give up but regardless Up The Villa
