  1. The series has ended over here and I thought it was brilliant and very well done. Part 9 is probably my favorite.

About the names - It's probably easy for me to keep track since I'm familiar with the books the series is based on, but they do say each other's names quite a bit. Leckie's buddies generally only go by their nicknames since Leckie didn't use their real names in his memoir.

  2. The episode set in Melbourne was rubbish - portraying these Aussie girls as sluts that would open up for any Yank with a chat-up line. Say it ain't so Nan!

 I don't think it was far off. In Leckie's book he calls their time in Melbourne 'The Great Debauch.'

I'm guessing that Vernon Micheel, a major character in the book, won't feature (carrier dive bomber pilot - I'll bet they don't have the planes).

No, he's not a character. The miniseries was originally planned to have 13 episodes focusing on 5 main characters, one of them a pilot, but they cut it down. You do see some corsairs bomb Bloody Nose Ridge in episode 7, though.

For me, the miniseries started off a bit slow but it's been getting better and better. The Peleliu arc was as good as anything I saw in Band of Brothers, and last night's episode with Basilone and Iwo Jima was very well done too. I love Band of Brothers, but at times it was a bit too romantic, a bit too polished, and had more of a 'Greatest Generation' feel to it. Nothing wrong with that, and they were probably more respectful since a lot of the men depicted were still alive at the time. What I like about The Pacific is that it goes where Band of Brothers wouldn't. They complement each other quite well.

  3. I think the first two episodes are supposed to be the weakest. We don't get to know the characters through their boot camp experience like we did in Band of Brothers. That type of episode probably wouldn't have worked for this as Basilone was already in the military and Sledge hasn't joined yet, but they should've provided a bit more background. We did get a taste of the brutality to come though, and I noticed they got the 'decapitated head with a severed dick shoved in its mouth' scene in pretty quickly.

  4. Having stubble on your face is like having rust on your Porsche. Get rid of that shit. I'm a bit of a shave nazi, though. If shaving irritates your face, the best thing you can do is to get rid of the goo in a can and to start using shave soap or quality cream and a shave brush. Don't try to get rid of it all at once; do a few passes. And don't apply too much pressure on the blade--you'll get razor burn. Also, you don't need a razor that has more than one blade as they do more harm than good. Truth is, most guys have no idea how to get a really good shave.

  5. I thought this was kind of amusing:

The Mets will have a runoff to determine their new eighth-inning sing-along tune.

The organization received 5 million votes on its Web site after inviting fans to choose from among 10 selections to potentially replace Sweet Caroline. An issue arose, however, when FARK.com readers bombarded the Mets with gag votes for a write-in candidate: Rick Astley’s Never Gonna Give You Up.

    The Astley tune actually won.

Rather than commit to that as the new eighth-inning tune since it probably doesn’t reflect the fan base’s wishes, the Mets will play the top six selections once apiece during the first six games of their home stand. The one that draws the largest crowd response will stick.

The other songs that made the cut, in descending order: Livin’ on a Prayer, Bon Jovi; I’m a Believer, The Monkees; Movin’ Out, Billy Joel; Sweet Caroline, Neil Diamond; and Build Me Up Buttercup, The Foundations.

The Mets suggested the Fark tune winning didn’t necessarily result in the runoff, saying the contest rules stipulated Internet voters would “help decide” the outcome.

    Mets avoid getting Rickroll'd

EDIT: Upon further inspection, the New York Mets have, in fact, been Rickroll'd:
