  1. I'd like to see Harry Redknapp given the job.

Taken Pompey from being a mid-table Championship outfit (Then Division One), to an established Premiership side challenging for europe. Constructed a tidy squad along the way. And although it doesn't really matter that much, but he's English aswell, i reckon he's the kind of manager players would want to play for, and someone that could bring back the passion, show them prima donnas what it means to represent your country..

The problem with 'Arry, as has been highlighted elsewhere, is one of his major strengths is wheeling and dealing in the transfer market and making stars out of relatively unknown foreigners. He won't have either of those opportunities with the England team.

He also doesn't have top managerial experience, which could go against him, but Van Basten and Klinsmann have proven it's not an absolute requirement. In saying this however, I think our gambling days are over, at least for the time being. We (and the FA) cannot afford to take anybody else on other than someone with a proven track record at the highest level in our current situation. I think if they hired Redknapp (or anybody with a similar track record) the backlash from failure would be even more immense next time if it all went pear shaped, and you would probably see some resignations. Barwick and Co. simply cannot take the risk if they have any desire to keep their jobs.

  2. It gets better and better...

According to the Evening Mail they've just approached Marcelo Lippi. Surprisingly, he's turned them down. :

    Indeed, utterly hilarious:

No Lippi service for ambitious Blues

Italy's World Cup-winning coach Marcello Lippi has rejected the chance to replace Steve Bruce as manager of Birmingham City.

Blues co-owner David Sullivan confirmed Blues had spoken with Lippi who enjoyed great success at club level with Juventus before leading Italy to football's ultimate prize in 2006.

Sullivan has been true to his word after claiming City would attempt to bring in "a top foreign coach" and not many have greater credentials than Lippi who is currently taking a break from the game.

Sullivan told the Birmingham Mail: "We made an approach and Lippi turned it down. This is not a stunt. It's genuine.

"He is available at the moment and we are looking at bringing in a manager of his stature and calibre, if at all possible. He was one of the first we went to but unfortunately nothing materialised.

"Of course, you get knock-backs. That's football. But if you do not try you will never know. It was the same with Martin Jol. It made sense for us to approach him.

"We are juggling other balls in the air at the moment and we will see which ones land. I want to stress to our supporters that we are working very, very hard to bring in the right man.

"Until you get to meet them and speak to them, you can never be quite sure. But it won't be for a lack of trying, believe me. We are determined to find a manager who would create a bit of a stir and excite people."

Sullivan is determined to bring in a new manager within the next 10 days with Bruce's number two Eric Black acting as caretaker for Saturday's game with Portsmouth.

And he also admitted the Black "had a chance" of becoming Bruce's successor.

Sullivan said: "We will resolve the issue of a new manager within 10 days. Eric Black has taken temporary charge and that might only be for one game.

"The agreement is that he will stay up to three weeks if necessary as we can't have the club ripped apart by Steve taking everyone with him.

"It is a very difficult situation for Eric. We understand he has a massive allegiance to Steve and we also respect that he is staying behind and will do a professional job for us.

"Has he got a chance of becoming manager? Yes, he has. We will just have to wait and see what develops."

What the hell are they doing?

  3. Andy Gray is apparently still a Villa fan:

The weekend's other derby at St. Andrew's is one in which I have a vested interest. I live in a mostly Blues area and a lot of my pals are Birmingham fans so I don't want Villa to lose because that leads to yours truly getting a fair bit of stick.

Two seasons ago Villa came out on top twice, but that followed a a fair few years of some poor results - partly because Birmingham always seemed to bully Villa out of the game. But this is a different Villa side with quite a tough defence that's a bit more up for a battle.

Villa will certainly fancy their chances - with Gaby Agbonlahor and Ashley Young capable of doing some real damage with their pace. The only real worry with this Villa side is that there aren't many goals - there's nobody likely to grab 20 this season.

But all they might need on Sunday is one goal and nobody will care how that goes in or where it comes from. It's all about the result and the bragging rights. And I for one would rather they went to the fans wearing claret and blue.

  4. I don't mind smoke in pubs too much, as long as the ventilation is adequate. Unfortunately, some places completely disregard this and you wake up smelling like you went to a Marlboro convention the night before.

They don't have the ban yet in France, but apparently it's on the cards. I can see it being a REALLY unpopular move over here, though.

But, the smoking ban does work pretty well from my experience. When I was in Sweden earlier this year, they enforce the no-smoking rule in pubs and clubs (at least all the ones I went to), and there's usually a designated balcony area or similar for people to go out and have a cig. Definitely a pleasant experience, and it was so nice not to be smelling of smoke each morning after.

  5. O`NEILL COOLS INTEREST IN BELLAMY

    Posted 31/05/07 13:51EmailPrintSave

Martin O'Neill is cooling his interest in signing Liverpool striker Craig Bellamy after learning he would have to pay between £10-12million for his signature.

Bellamy could become surplus to requirements at Anfield after just one season with the Merseysiders and he was only a substitute for the Champions League final.

O'Neill worked successfully with Bellamy during a loan spell at Celtic two years ago but is not prepared to pay significantly over the odds for the Wales international.

He will instead seek better value for money elsewhere unless the Reds drop their price.

West Brom full-back Paul Robinson is being monitored by O'Neill following the Baggies' failure to regain their top-flight status.

Robinson has two years left of his contract and, although remaining committed to the Baggies, he also expressed a desire to play in the Premiership again after the play-off final defeat by Derby on Monday.

Wilfred Bouma filled the left-back role for most of last season but the departure of Jlloyd Samuel to Bolton leaves him short of cover and competition in that department.

O'Neill's summer targets are being bankrolled by club owner Randy Lerner but the fact other clubs, including West Ham and Newcastle, have financial muscle could make his task more difficult.

He said: "It won't be easy, but that's the beauty of it. I'm not sure it's the case we're all going for the same players. But one thing is for sure, we're going to to try to improve and we have our own priorities.

"West Ham made their intentions very clear in January and they have made them clear now so I expect them to be (signing) very big players in the transfer market in the summer.

"They have got renewed life from staying up and there's no doubt that, if they were already making inroads in January, they are certainly going to go for it now as well.

"Newcastle will be giving it a big go now as well - as they always do."

  6. As for RB, I reckon Heitinga is worth a punt. Might take some to prise him from Ajax now that they're in the CL next season though. Sonic needs to put in a few words for us with him and his mate Wesley ;)
Bouma will be on the plane to Thailand tomorrow with the Dutch squad handing out brochures of Bodymoor Heath and giving a carefully rehearsed sales pitch on behalf of Mon and Aston Villa.

We will then sign the whole of the Dutch national team in the next ten days.

    Sorted!

Sounds good, on the proviso that Boulahrouz misses the plane :crylaugh:
