  1. Someone mentioned on here last night that McLeish may have been a necessary evil, that they were never going to back him financially, they just needed someone to come in and cut costs but have enough grit about them to keep us up. I won't suggest that it worked out great but maybe just maybe with the ugly first step achieved we can look ahead to a brighter second step.

    I might have agreed with you. But if we were after someone to just keep us up, then why did we pay so much to small heath for him and put him on ridiculous wages when Curbishley was available for free. I'm sorry, but I actually believe Randy thought he would do well here.

  2. I hope Delia says no and we we turn our attentions to somebody better than Lambert

    Name some names then. Give us your ideas on who is better. AVB and Rafa might be better, but will they realistically come here?

    who knows if they would come. I doubt they have even been asked, Martinez is way above Lambert IMO and so to is Quique Sanchez Flores. Rafa is a good shout but it depends on Lerners backing.

    Lambert is a bit meh to me and I cant say im over keen to watch his style of play. I am also concerned that defensivly Norwich were awful and conceeded a whopping 66 goals. I also find that Lambert comes across as a bit of an arse in his interviews and I can some personality clashes happening if he was to join. He reminds me of Peter Grant which is never a good thing.

    If Lambert joins, he'll either whip us in to some military style shape and come Christmas we'll be having a pretty solid season sat in 6th or 7th, playing as a team and with some real steel....Or, the personality clashes will be fully in motion, we'll be languishing in 19th after conceding 45 goals, halftime riots in the dressing room led by Dunne and Collins while Bent, Zog and Ireland all hand in transfer requests on the 1st of January. I just can't make my mind up about this guy.

  3. Martinez is credited with overhauling the clubs he has been involved with. I understand that he takes a great deal of time to ensure the reserves/youth play the same style of football so they can be moved seemlessly into the first team.

    Villa have been crying out for this for some time now. I think he'd be a great manager....

    ... but he will need time to turn the club around. Still, it can't be any worse than this season - could it?

    The only thing that could be worse than last season....is administration. It wasn't just the flirtation with relegation, it was the garbage on the pitch we had to endure week in week out. For gods sake, give us a manger that, at the very least provides us with some entertainment.

    I hear you Bladerunner,the Villa faithfull hear you and Randy Lerner can hear you ,i hope.

    Amen to that. I don't think I could take another season of.....once a fortnight, leaving VP feeling like a broken man, only to arrive home, switch on the TV, to watch an interview of an impostor pretending to be our manager tell me that he thought we had played well. Thank god the season ended when it did. Another month of it and I'd have been in therapy.

  5. I am not entirely convinced that the propaganda around Martinez is really justified but surely if he is that good he will talk to who he pleases and Whelan can just **** off. I though he had not signed a new contract with Wigan anyway.

    Just been looking and it seems he did sign a new 3 year contract, so we'll have to pay for him if Randy wants him. Another chance for Whelan to fleece us. Maybe all this Liverpool talk from Whelan is a smoke screen to ramp up the price for him. If there's one thing Whelan knows how to do, it's make money.

    Wigan owner Dave Whelan said to ESPN: "I was actually with Roberto when our chief executive called to tell him that Liverpool have made their approach. I told Roberto that he had my permission to speak with Liverpool.

    "I knew that the day would come when this happened, so it wasn't unexpected, he is a good manager so I am not surprised a club like Liverpool want him.

    "You have got to regard Liverpool as a big club, so I told Roberto that I wouldn't stand in his way, it was up to him to decide, and I shall await his decision. It is up to him and Liverpool now.

    "I can imagine he will want to manage such a big club but I would willingly keep him if I could. He only signed a new three-year contract three months ago, so yes I would be due compensation, but I would rather have Roberto than the compensation."

  6. Am I alone in thinking Martinez needs to grow some bollocks? His Victorian father aka Dave Whelan has deigned to allow him to talk to Liverpool. How gracious ffs.

    All in all I am rapidly going off Martinez, big fish in a small sea and happy to be so.

    Mind you if he took the Liverpool job I would give him 12 months maximum. The Liverpool fans are so utterly deluded they think a simple change of manager will deliver the CL so they will give him no time at all.

    Liverpool are miles off the top four and are living on past dreams.

    I actually think Martinez could be the big looser in all this. Since he has been allowed to speak to liverpool he has come under closer scrutinity and the media have picked up on what I have thought all along:-

    1.He kept wigan up by a single goal season before last

    2.Lambert and Rodgers have done better than him this season

    3. Steve Bruce did better before him

    Every pool fan and every WBA fan doesn't want him. Much as I wish he would get the liverpool job - I sense they will find him out - just in time.

    I don't want him as villa boss - but the scenario could be - he doesn't land the liverpool job - so either goes back to Wigan with his tail between his legs - or makes it known he wants the Villa or WBA job.

    I hope its not him - but if wants the Villa job - with OGS waiting in the wings - the roles are very much reversed this time.

    I think the test for Lambert and Rodgers is next season. Many teams coming up do well in their first season. Jewell got Wigan to 10th in their first season and Coppell got Reading to 8th. Their respective following seasons, Wigan scraped up in 17th and Reading were relegated.

  7. shame he only does it final 1/4 of the season though

    Yes but what a final 1/4. Wigan won 7 of their last 9 games and beat 3 of the top 5 in the process taking an average of 2.33 points per game. That's Champions League form. When we played them at their place they looked absolute dross, and I had them as certs to go down. You have to credit Martinez with the turn around. He changed their tactics and formation and turned them into a decent side. That's what I want here at Villa. A manger who is tactically astute, and will change things when necessary. MON and Mcleish had their set tactics and that was that. Hell, we could all set our watches by MON's substitutions. If Martinez doesn't get the Pool job, we should definitely go for him. OGS is a bit of an unknown quantity. At least Martinez has 3 years Prem management experience under his belt. Whelan sounded today like he was already reserved to losing him. I think we should test the water again.

    On a side note, looking at that final 1/4 table, it makes me wonder how the hell we managed to stay up. Out of our last 10 games, we won none, failed to score in 5 of them, and gained an almighty 1/2 a point average per game. I just hope to god Randy gets it right this time. I don't think I could cope with another season like the last one. Martinez for me.

    CS=Clean sheets

    FtS=Failed to score

    PPG=Points per game

  8. I can see Norwich playing real hardball for Lambert. They are on a high after a 12th place finish on their first season back up. They'll want to keep as many of their playing and management staff as possible and may just point blank refuse to let us speak to Lambert. Whereas Whelan seems willing to deal with anybody if the price is right.

  9. Lamberts odds are tiny. I wouldn't even get a chomp bar from £10.

    I would be very happy.

    I think Lambert's odds have come in for us due to a flood of money on Martinez for the Pool job. But I actually think Lambert might be more suited to the Pool job than Martinez.
