Young won't be playing RM. God love him, he's got no dynamism on the ball anymore.

Absolutely zero chance of him beating a man over 5 yards

Didn't see him beat Son over 5 yards then?

I have. It wasn't very powerful and it was nowhere near "Just inside the post"

Nakamba was decent. I don't think he should be taking penalties but I agree with the point that the coaching staff know better than us. There's probably a reason he was taking them. Maybe he's good at them in training. Maybe nobody else volunteered. Who knows

But let's not pretend that was a good penalty. it wasn't.

If Kapa goes the wrong way Marv scores.  Maybe you're not one of the clowns saying Nakamba should never take penalty's, but you must agree - it was a Much better effort than Young's, or Chilwell's....? Edit- Just watched them again - It was also better than Mount's and Emi Buendia's - certainly harder and better placed.

Annoyed that Smith had Nakamba take a pen. Ruins the evening that. A player you know has no chance of scoring takes the 2nd pen

You think you know better than the Manager and highly qualified coaching staff. who watch  the players take penalties in training, who can and can't hit a good spot kick?  Unbelievable!!

My 10 year old daughter absolutely idolises Jack, she even has a signed luke away shirt on her bedroom wall.

Having broke the news of Jack possibly leaving us last week she was devastated.

This morning I have told her it looks like today is the day

Her response "meh, you're either Villa or you're not"

She said she will take his shirt off the wall when it has been confirmed.

Better attitude than most commenters on here yesterday for sure!  You've raised a bright kid there mate - congratulations.....

  5. I suspect that Smith has known since the last match that Jack could well be out. I'm sure there will be a game plan in place that the squad have been working on all week, and that Dean has picked what he feels is the best team available to him, in order to attempt to execute that plan....  I'm looking forward to watching, hopeful that we can put in a good performance and get something out of the game.  It's actually looked to me to be a bit of a problem in the last few games that nearly everything seems to go through Jack, if only because teams are now doubling up on him. -  Time to see if the rest of the squad can step up to this massive challenge, against a really good team, without him. Almost forgot Engels existed he's injured that often, or completely unfavoured?

There's no note of an injury to my knowledge but when we're down to bare bones there's still no sight of him.

He had a Calf injury, but he's been on the bench since the Man City game I think..... Not today though - In fact NO CBs!!

Where’s all the moaning gone on this thread. We all knew Watkins was coming anyway.

He just seemed to stop posting very suddenly  (after giving me the mother of all headaches!),  was he kicked out or something??

No, you've taken me entirely out of context.  If anything, a fan feels more than a supporter, due the implied fanaticism / obessession connotation, and if you don't see that, then there isnt anything , i or anyone else, can do for you, as the definitions are clearly different.

One implies a moral or financial backing (supporter) whilst the other implies a following devoid of negative conontations (fanatic).  If you do not see that, then i feel sorry for you, as you clearly lack a firm grasp of the english language.

This is the last post i will make on the subject, as anyone who does does not see the difference between the two words lacks a basic undetstanding of the english language, to such an extent, that debate is pointless.

If you do not grasp the distinction that fanactic implies, you have my sympathy.  But do not get me wrong, contrary to Tro's description, i'd argue that a fan experiences emotional distress to a greater degree than a supporter, due to the fact that a fanatic gives unconditionally positive backing, whereas as a supporter does not.

    But each to their own.

Just to note, that my wofe, who has a Phd in this field agrees with my synopsis.  Wether you agree, or disagree, is irrelevant.

Invent your own meanings for words if you insist buddy. It's  just that communication would be simpler and much more effective  if we all stick to the actual dictionary definitions. Also - for future reference, it is entirely unconvincing to try to win arguments by attempting to pull rank on others by  claiming to possess  qualifications you so obviously don't. Anyone who actually knows how to spell and use correct grammar and punctuation will see through your utter bullshit immediately.

    Hoping Dean springs a surprise as we have virtually nothing to lose;

    My team would be:

                             Nyland

    Guilbert    Engels    Mings     Hause

    Elmo        Luiz    Nakamba   Targett

                         Jack

                   Samatta

Jack in a free role, elmo and Targett to get forward on break and whip in crosses for Samatta and Jack running in.

We can but dream but at least we should keep the score down as full backs wont get caught upfield and mid 2 can just sit in to close KDB

I had similar thoughts in terms of formation with slightly different personnel...   I think we need to press them high as a team and try to force mistakes then hit them fast on the counter when we gain possession- only one of the full backs venturing forward at any one time. Nothing to be gained by being too defensive and inviting City on to us...

I didn't use the word etymology as i didn't think it was accessible enough for everyone to know what it meant.

So, for giggles, theres the dictionary definition for fan

    Fan 1

    And for supporter:

    Supporter

Similar, but certainly not the same.  Also, notice in the definition for Fan, it notes the word is short for fanatic, so heres that definition as well

    Fan 2

So, even looking at the dictionary definition, its still abundently clear the words do not mean the same thing.  Fan implies a degree of obsession that is not implied by the word supporter.

I agree, dictionary definitions and etymology do not dictate the colloquial or common usage, but then, i didn't start the dictionary definition argument, i'm merely pointing out that the assertion that the dictionary definitions of the 2 words are not the same.

We can look at common usage, as urban dictionary is a useful tool foe this

    Supporter 2

    Fan 3

    Still not the same.

Mate, nothing quoted in any of your links actually supports your claim of any difference, in terms of meaning between the two words i'm afraid.  They effectively mean the same thing within  the context of following a sport or a team. You merely evoke - (unverified) implications of obsession, that are actually your own imaginings. The original argument / debate  stems from someone else (TRO?) claiming that a fan was an armchair observer, while a supporter was someone who actually forks out for tickets and goes to games.  Clearly no such distinction exists. That is what I and others objected to as it has no basis in fact, and  people felt it implied the superiority of a supporter over a mere fan. Anyway - I hope to God the team we all follow and love obsessively - (whether fan or supporter), show the same amount of fight as you and TRO have done here, when they play at Wembley this afternoon 🙂  UTV

I'd love for you to post links to where you 'interpreted' that 'fan' and 'supporter' have the same meaning, because quite simply they do not.  It seems like what you looked at was a list of synonyms.  Synonyms have similar meanings or can be used in the same context - this does not mean they carry the same meaning.

I've a degree in lineage of words and can tell you in no uncertain terms that 'fan' , being short for 'fanatic', implies a degree of obsession, whereas a 'supporter' carries no such connotation.

I'm not going to get into 'which is better' as that's open to interpretation.  But to say the two words mean the same thing just can't be further from the truth.

Nah! - I'm not wearing it. If you truly possessed the qualification you claim, you would know that the word Lineage pertains to peoples ancestry.  The word you were looking for is 'Etymology'. If you really had a degree in etymology, then you should know that the origin of a word often has little to do with its current, commonly accepted meaning. You should also know that a dictionary is a useful place to look up the actual DEFINITION of any word. You ought to get yourself one maybe, and look up the words; - Lineage, etymology, definition, fan and Supporter.

but there wasn't an insistence...its was just my opinion (responded to anothers post on the matter)and I have heard it said elsewhere....but why chase down my opinion, just give yours.

I have no insistence, it was just a suggested opinion to anothers post, who asked the question.

but many things can vary slightly from a dictionary, depending on context and when interpreted in a colloquial manner.....and thats all it is my interpretation.....like you have yours, which is fine.

Maybe  it would have been more appropriate for you to answer your version of the distinction between fan & Supporter to the original poster, as opposed to trying to trump mine....its my opinion mate, nothing more nothing less.

Mate, there is no distinction. Words have clearly laid down meanings. Fan and supporter mean exactly the same thing in the context of a sport or team. We don't get to have our own opinions on the definition of  words, just like we don't get an opinion  on the FACT that 2 + 2 = 4, or  that  Copper is a metal. (well we do - but any other opinions than the known facts are demonstrably wrong - sorry)  UTV

yes one goes to the games, the other just follows out of interest.

Just for clarity - If you look up the words 'Fan' and 'Supporter' in a dictionary they have effectively identical definitions. You could also use the words follower, adherent, or disciple to mean the same thing. Your Insistence they have different meanings based on actual attendance at matches is your own invention and i'm afraid factually incorrect.

Would love to see Nakamba’s pass success rate, be shocked if it’s anything over 20%.

Neil Taylor continues to steal a living.

Nyland looked more than capable of being number 1 until the end of the season, at least.

Grealish just head and shoulders above all others, if we could just get two more players on the pitch on his wavelength we’d be unreal.

    85% according to whoscored.com

I was highly delighted we didn't lose 5-0......losing 2-1 in the manner we did was disappointing, but more importantly, retains confidence for future games.

getting a mullering affects confidence.....we avoided that, thankfully.

Very true, and don't forget the little matter of 'goal difference'   which could relegate us if things are tight at the end of the season....

I have watched the game back twice now. I only managed to watch the first 15 minutes and last 5 minutes live as it happend.

    - I thought we were pretty bright for the first 15 or 20 minutes. Controlled the ball and dictated play without creating too much. My issue was we kept looking for the diagonal and both Trez and Jota did well with what they were given but then lacked the final ball. I am not sure after using Wesley so much at Everton why we chose to ignore him for most of the first half.

    - After this period we were awful. Palace created more and wanted it more. However, I could visibly see how pissed off we were with the yellow cards, especially Grealish and McGinn. It shouldn't but I think it seriously impacted our players.

    - Second half - again we controlled the first 10 minutes or so but then a silly challenge by Trez ruined all that good work.

    - Until Davis came on we were backs against the wall and it looked like a matter of time. I thought it was a really good positive change by Smith and we managed to get hold of the ball more and tried to make something happen without threatning. If anything Palace scored against the run of play slightly as Grealish was beginning to get more of the ball. I actually think Grealish played really well and was probably our only stand out player along with Heaton.

    - They then scored and we faltered a bit for 10 minutes. Then we tried again for the last 10 minutes but didn't really do anything. What a great run by Grealish at the end and a travesty it wasn't rewarded with an assist and a goal for Lansbury.

The referred ruined the game both in terms of the goal and also the needless yellow cards which impacted our players. I know everyone makes mistakes but he definitely had an agenda that day.

where did you watch it back?  any chance of a link please?
