  1. I think that the point of the question has been lost here, which is considering Warnocks alleged behaviour, should we give him another chance at Villa or get rid of him. Whether, given another chance, he is good enough or not is not the question (though the length of the thread and divided opinion suggests that it is a pertinent one).

My answer, therefore, is that every player deserves a second chance, and if the rumours are true it is out of character. He should therefore be given another chance to prove himself at Villa. If he isn't good enough, well that is a different matter. We really need two left backs and for me, Warnock should be one of them. He is experienced and, by all accounts, a very good professional. Good to have at the club and in the squad at least.

  2. Laursen for me - for now. He has produced consistently (though not often enough because of injury) for Villa over 5 years, and Dunne hasn't been here for one season yet. I can't judge anybody on around 20 games, but if Dunne keeps playing the way that he is for another season or two then he'll definitely become a legend in the style of Martin Laursen.

But, is he likely to be up there with Paul McGrath? No, not for me. as much as "Richard Dunne, my Lord" fits in as another verse to the "Paul McGrath my Lord"/"It's your round my Lord"/etc song - and so it should do, to demonstrate our admiration - he will never have that something extra that McGrath did. That perception that let him know where the ball was going to be played before the opposition striker had decided to play it there, or the flair of a midfield maestro to calm a dangerous attack. Paolo Maldini had that as well. Never mind wondering about having Dunne and Laursen togethef, imagine having Dunne or Laursen alongside McGrath!

So, for me it's too early to judge Dunne against Laursen, and in time I think the fact that Dunne will play many more games will make him more valued. Ironically that will make Laursen more of a legend (think about how Luc Nilis is held in high esteem!). But however they are compared, I think that they will always be competing for a place on a short-list for the next-best centre-back to take a place alongside McGrath on Villa's best ever XI

  3. Crouch and Carew can't play together in an O'Neil side, it's not the way that MON plays football. Look at all of his teams from Wycombe to Celtic and Villa, they have all been made up of one big "hold up" guy and another pacey striker. Crouch will compete with Carew, then Gabby and another signing (or maybe Delfonso or if needed Young or Maloney filling the gap) will compete for the pacey spot.

Personally I'd welcome Crouch to our striking rosta, because he's no mug and has improved on the promise that he showed last time he wore Claret and Blue. But if we are as big a club as we hope to be then that should not be at the expense of Barry. I accept that we can't offer Champions League football, but it's the job of MON and Lerner to convince Barry that we will be there soon (and to back up that conviction with quality signings) . If we really aspire to be a top four club then we should be keeping hold of the likes of Barry and also signing the kind of player to compete with the top four.

  4. In this instance though if the announcement is linked to the bids for AVFC the LSE needs to be informed first - By law...... So even if there was movement behind the scenes later tonight, once the LSE closes at 5pm, we wouldn't get any information until after they are informed *I stress if it is related to the takeover and bid/s* - So tomorrow would be the earliest if nothing happens before 5pm at the LSE.

Unless the LSE have already been informed, but the club (as is typical) are slow in announcing today's activities.

  5. They were reporting that they are expecting a statement to be released by the club today.....? Whats all that about then?

My guess is that somebody has made a formal bid. Up until now, there have only been "indicative" offers. Today we might find out that one or more of the consortia are serious.
