  1. Why on earth anyone would want Hoddle or Benitez to manage Villa is beyond me.

Hoddle has done nothing in management and has been out of the game for so long now he'll be completely out of touch, as well as being a fruit loop. Absolute disaster if we get him.

Benitez fluked a European Cup with Liverpool and delivered naff all after that with a load of money wasted to boot. What would he do at Vila in the current situation?

Surely we’ve got to be looking at some one of the level of Lambert, Poyet, Martinez or Rodgers who are used to getting the best out of average players which will be supplemented by a couple of decent signings.

    lolololol

Fluked his way to two European Cup finals and the highest points total not to win the PL title?

    wow.

I actually feel sorry for Benitez, the English media really have **** his reputation which leads to comments like this. ^

  2. **** no, no Martinez the Relegation Battle Expert.

I don't understand this way of thinking at all. He had done a fantastic job at Wigan with a around £3.5m profit on transfers since he's been there. Not to mention Rodgers is getting all of the accolades from the foundations RM put in place at Swansea. What do you expect him to do at Wigan exactly?

    - Guardiola had no experience and was promoted from the B team.

    - Benitez had a pretty poor CV, sacked from his 1st job with 2 wins in 30 or something like that. Valencia, who had reached back-to-back CL finals, took a punt on him from a lowly club in tenerife.

    - Klopp, shite at Mainz then went on to win 2 titles with Dortmund.

Plenty more examples too. Doesn't matter where they come from, the character and football philosophy is what matters and at just 38, I think Martinez could be a top manager.

  3. Some interesting articles on Benitez...

    http://tomkinstimes.com/2010/02/lucky-rafa/

    http://tomkinstimes.com/2009/10/some-rafa-facts/

    http://tomkinstimes.com/2009/10/the-benitez-myths-series/

Also he had a net spend of around 78m in 6 seasons, about £13m a year. Two Champions League fianls and 4 points of the title and some would want Brendan **** Rodgers first. :D

Whilst I agree that Benitez did a good job, there was a pretty good squad to start with. Has he ever had to start the building job? I don't know, so it's a genuine question

    From one of the articles...

With some revisionism (see Charlie Nicholas’ comments as one example), it seems that Benítez actually inherited a really good squad; not least because he himself worked miracles with it.

Of course, his critics slate him for selling Michael Owen, when in truth, the only reliable (up to that point) goalscorer on the books was intent on leaving. Lucky Rafa managed to get given only £8m after Rick Parry’s negotiations, on account of the player’s contract having run down prior to his arrival.

And Heskey, who could have provided Benítez with someone to hold the ball up for goalscoring midfielders in the manager’s preferred system, was already sold. (I was a big critic of Heskey’s during the final Houllier years, but I said during 2004/05 that he would have been better in the new system, even if only for a year or two until someone more reliable was sought.)

The main problem for Lucky Rafa was that Houllier’s best signings would only present a short-term legacy. Had Didi Hamann and Sami Hyypia been 25 in 2004, then they’d probably still be at the club, and money spent on their replacements would have been invested elsewhere. But they were already 30, as was Stephane Henchoz, who was a clearly fading force.

That’s not Houllier’s fault, as these were successful buys; but their age didn’t help Benítez.

Let’s also remember that Jamie Carragher became a really top-class player only after Benítez arrived and switched him to centre-back on a permanent basis, and that Steven Gerrard averaged six goals a season under Houllier, before becoming a 20-a-season man. So while these two were the best of Rafa’s inheritance, he also reshaped their game. Steve Finnan was another who found his best form under Benítez.

Meanwhile, the young Academy graduates were way below the required standard. There were some other decent-enough kids, but even the promising Sinama-Pongolle only scored nine goals in 64 games; compare that with the much-less-heralded and less-expensive David N’Gog, who can play the lone-striker role and already has 10 in 42, and is still only 20.

Then there were the keepers: Dudek had a great debut season in 2001/02, but had been making ricks ever since. Kirkland, meanwhile, had the bone density of a baby sparrow with osteoporosis (and although a good shot-stopper, was terrible at ‘sweeping’ – slow across the ground and awful at kicking).

Elsewhere, Murphy and Warnock might have been kept on for longer (although Warnock had yet to play for the Reds, aged 22, before Rafa arrived), and Riise was certainly a good, if limited player. Smicer was talented, but ageing and rarely fit; ditto Harry Kewell, who should have been one of the real jewels handed over by Houllier, but whose body could no longer cope with Premier League football.

But Traore, Diao, Cheyrou, Diouf, Le Tallec, Baros and Biscan will always been viewed as deeply flawed players, even if some were capable of the occasional inspired game, as seen in the run to Istanbul. Worse still, most had precious little resale value.

Oh, and throw in Djibril Cissé, an erratic talent (who twice badly broke his leg; lucky Rafa) who, by today’s prices, cost the equivalent of £28m (which lucky Rafa often gets credited with paying), and the squad of 2004 contained little more than a handful of talents capable of offering any kind of service to Benítez beyond the first year or two

Surprisingly poor squad left by Houllier, in hindsight.

  4. villa can't afford to buy 50 players in the hope 4 will be world class like Rafa did.

I think we have to face up to the fact, Martinez and Lambert are unlikely to come to Villa, we also have no idea who is on our wanted list.

Everything out there is pure press and fan invented speculation, the only thing concrete was OGS and that was leaked.

We have to be patient rather than believing what the press are dredging up to fill column inches and **** twitter crap!

I expect the manager to not be anyone obvious that the press is lazily linking us with. I hope it is someone fresh young and unexpected rather than the obvious newbies who were are placing way too much praise and hope on, and the tired old guard of managers who should have been shot years ago. But i know nothing, this time tomorrow we could have Lionel Hutz in place.

Torres, Reina, Agger, Skrtel, Johnson, Mascherano, Alonso, Arbeloa, Kuyt, Luis Garcia, Bellamy, Lucas.

    ^^^

A lot of wordclass players in that list, not to mention some bargains like Rodriguez for £1m. He bought some crap but what manager doesn't? A lot of players he turned a profit on btw...something that could be crucial for us.

  5. cannot believe people would turn down Rafa Benitez.....

inspired one of the greatest come backs in european football....

has won trophies across Europe but nah who gives a **** coz he bought David Ngog...

we are an average premier league club and we think we are better than Benitez?

unbelievable...i'd give my right bollock to have that winner managing us

This is so true. Not to mention he bought a lot of these players, like N'gog, to sell them on for more £££ because of a lack of funds towards the end. Even more impressive really.

  6. What part of he handed in a transfer request do you not understand? **** me, not difficult this. Do keep up. It's not £19, it's £18.5m. Possibly rising to £20m.

Ok, lets start off with....where did their owner say he'll be spending 100m??

    The Sun 12/11/2011

"Kenny will Stew on £100m spree"

Tailed in other newspapers also on that day.

Birmingham Evening Mail article about the price being £25M...

ASTON Villa have told Liverpool to stop wasting their time on Stewart Downing – as Alex McLeish focuses instead on raiding Blues this weekend for his potential new assistant boss Peter Grant.

It has emerged that Kenny Dalglish’s side originally had a £12 million offer for Downing rejected out of hand three weeks ago before returning with an improved £15 million bid on Tuesday.

Villa are insulted by the Anfield giants’ valuations of Downing, particularly the opening gambit which was the amount Villa originally paid for the winger when he was injured two years ago.

A mooted third bid predicted to be around the £18 million mark has not materialised and the claret and blues are keen for Liverpool to now divert their attentions away from the England wideman.

Randy Lerner, Paul Faulkner and McLeish are adamant there is no need or desire to sell the former Middlesbrough favourite who still has two years on his contract despite rejecting a new deal.

Even if Downing attempts to force the issue with a formal transfer request Villa are prepared to stick to their stance and keep him against his wishes, unless Kenny Dalglish returns with an irresistible offer, possibly as high as £25 million.

    B'ham Mail July 9th

You said the owner publicly stated he'll be backing Kenny with £100m, that is an article which adds up the fees Liverpool may have paid, not taking into consideration Torres £££ I might add. The owner said nothing.

Why are you believing the the Birmingham Mail about the POSSIBLE, POSSIBLE £25m bid the other day, yet when tonights actually says a £20m fee, you dismiss it???

  7. Where have I ignored something?.. I've answered every point you've raised!

I've been posting on VT for long enough now for people to know that I don't spout tosh.

No wonder people don't bother posting ITK stuff anymore.

You don't know what is going to come out in the next week or so, who is going to sign... or what McCleish is going to say to the fans

The same person who told me Downing was going for definite had agreed terms in fact ALSO told me Milner wanted to come back

for definite at the same time. Which is why I thought he was wrong!!

You've dodged pretty much everything, going off on one, taking the convo onto other irrelevant things.

I very much doubt that and as I said before the Downing to Liverpool story was EVERYWHERE weeks ago. So much for ITK. :winkold:

The player agreed terms, do you mean?

  8. Transfer request handed in YESTERDAY.

I think you'll find that SD had been told he was wasting his time handing one in unless the right bid came in for him.

Whats that got to do with it? Your theory has just been exposed as bullshit unfortunately. He handed in a transfer request Tuesday and the third and successful bid came in Wednesday night. Then the right bid did come in and guess what? A £20m deal agreed. :winkold:

Villa want to make this deal look as good as possible, if a 'huge' offer had come in like you suggested (for some reason), the club would want that to be out in the public. :winkold:

Villa don't normally disclose fees. Like I said I was told 2 weeks ago it was a done deal but only if it was the right price.

Can I just ask why winkolds appear after every sentence in your posts?

    Do you have a tick?

Move over Ricky Gervais, COMEDY GOLD this stuff. :winkold:

Really?? 2 weeks ago?? Shocking stuff this. It was common knowledge, all over the papers etc, so lets not even go there.

Who said anything about disclosing fees?? If they wanted the HUGE fee to be in the public domain, they could leak it. Simples. £20m. Accept it.

You seem to make grand statements...then when you get quizzed further, you either ignore it or found to be talking gash. :? :winkold: :winkold: :winkold:

  9. Transfer request handed in YESTERDAY.

  10. Also my dear Watson ... just read Paul Faulkner's statement again from B'ham Mail...

"Villa chief executive Paul Falkner told the Mail: "I can confirm that we have reached an agreement with Liverpool following an improved offer received earlier today and the submission of a formal transfer request by Stewart Downing and have subsequently given them permission to speak to the player."

    Now read it again.

What came first in that... the transfer request from Downing or the bid from Liverpool?

I would suggest that the quotes imply that the bid from Liverpool came in first and Downing submitted a formal transfer request once he was informed of the bid.

So by a means of dedcution...surely The bid in itself however much it was......was obviously enough to tempt Villa into selling this time.

Sorry if I'm doing my Miss Marple impression but wanted to make the point that the fee I think you'll find is higher than is being reported, but I would suspect both clubs would like it undisclosed.

    Transfer request handed in YESTERDAY.

The fee is £18.5m rising to £20m by all accounts. I'd imagine Villa would put it out there if the fee was higher if that was the case, to placate the fans.

  11. Apparently it's £18.5 rising to £20m with add ons.

Not very much more than £15M though is it really? Don't forget they advertised they were going to spend £100M

the idiots and spent £20M on Henderson?!!!

So the fee for Downing agreed is less??!!... I think not!

Have Liverpool said how much the fee is at all? Liverpool who had to pay how much to get Andy Carroll off Newcastle?

Where did they advertise they were going to spend £100m?

As someone else has pointed out, I think you fancy yourself as abit of an ITK. Stop passing Kendricks tweets and articles off as some sort of inside info. :winkold:

  12. Seems Huge bid came in today for him. Far bigger than what's been touted.

I think you'll find McCleish will intimate the bid sealed the deal - NOT Downing's transfer request. That just made it more tempting.

Will be interesting to see what AM says about all this.

Apparently it's £18.5 rising to £20m with add ons.

  13. What behaviour? Wanting to get the most of his career?

He hasn't said or done anything out of order, he hasn't demanded a move or bitched to the press.

All he has done is go back on previous statements, which given the situation changed is understandable. His first set of comments were when it looked like we were going into a 2nd season under Houllier, then things changed and once again we were starting again.

Now don't get me wrong I'm still delighted that Houllier went even if I'm not happy with who replaced him but the simple fact is things changed and so it seems did Downings views.

Now that might well also have been changed because of people whispering in his ear or because of a confirmed offer who knows but the reality for me is this.

The team and the club that Downing finds himself a part of now is not the same team and club with which he signed not so long ago. He joined us from Boro because we were ambitious, progressive and trying to achieve something, we aren't that club any more and if Downing had any doubt about this the proof was provided for him by the arrival of McLeish.

The landscape at the club has changed it is understandable therefore if players attitudes to the club have changed.

I think Downing owes the club a little more after they signed him injured but in reality he probably felt he had that debt to O'Neill rather than the club. It is also unrealistic to expect a player to stay for this reason alone and lets be honest we as a club aren't giving him many other reasons to want to stay are we.

If Downing wants out he is doing nothing different to what 99% of players would do in his circumstances. We can bitch and moan about it all we want, we can call him all the names we want but it isn't going to change anything especially as the problem here and the real issue isn't Downing its those people running the club who have frankly made quite appalling decisions over the last 12 months and arguably for quite a bit longer than that.

Most of us don't think we are going anywhere as a club so I'm struggling to think why people are lambasting a player for thinking the same in the face of offers to move to clubs that are.

If people really think that players, any players are going to put the feelings of fans and the wishes of clubs ahead of their own careers, goals, ambitions and wealth then they are kidding themselves.

Downing is no more a villain than any other footballer out there, they are all the same and the truth is if we were in their shoes we would all likely do the same. If I were playing for a club that held no emotional attachment to me that had gone through the 12 months we have and I had the chance to go to Arsenal or Liverpool I would likely want to take it.

    Top post.

owners that don't, IMO, really understand football and are trying to make money out of it

    What makes you say this?

  14. Your living in the past mate..

Try looking at recent history of the 2 clubs in all areas.

Villa have a better ground, better training facilities, more modern and up to date in every area, more kids coming through, better finacially, richer owner and better players running deeper..

Liverpool are a good/average side in and around 6th place, just like we are.

We finished above them last but one season ago and last season we had massive injuries and in house problems, yet still we started to get it together towards the end of the season beating them and climbing the table...

Liverpool as a global brand? You mean Asia buying their shirts? Try looking at how many City,Man U ansd Chelsea shirts are bought there last year and how fast they are growing globaly in comparison.. The world fan base changes with success..Liverpool "need" to win the league and quickly if they want to remain a big club...The pressure is far more on their shoulders than ours. We are growing very steadily and have a better infrastucture in place at this time.

Liverpool are living off their past which is slowly getting forgotten about with the emergence of the big boys.

What recent history makes us better?

Villa Park maybe more modern but Anfield has a bigger capacity...which is more important? As others have pointed out, their ground is one of the most iconic in the whole of sport.

How do you know we have better training facilities, or more to the point, who cares?

How do you know we have more kids coming through, haven’t pool got something like 8 of the England U17 squad at the World Cup atm? (Sterling looks like a potential super star) Some cracking young lads in the first team at the end of the season too I thought

Better financially? Based on? I don’t see us splashing the cash like them...

Richer owner? If you or anyone follows Baseball, their owners are fantastic at the Red Sox...

Better players? Really? How many of our players would get in their side?

Didn’t Liverpool sign the biggest £££ shirt sponsor in the world not long ago?

You go anywhere in the world and Liverpool will be amongst the top 5 clubs in world football. Thats just the way it is and we can’t compete with that. Sad but true.

It’s a little delusional to think otherwise really, we all want Downing to stay but come on! Although saying that and getting back on topic, if we were to swap Downing for N’zogbia and Foster, that would improve the team overall imo. Be the smart thing to do considering he looks as though he’s had his head turned.
