Gardner can be AS GOOD as Wilshere but I don't think he'll be better. That's not a knock on Gardner's ability but just how good Wilshere is.
I really do feel though that Gardner can be a massive player for us as he's in the same mould as Gerrard (Not comparing their ability btw). He can influence the game in many different way's in all area's of the pitch. For example DB is a great goalscorer but if other player's are having a crap game and he's not getting the service he won't do much by himself, whereas Gardner could take the game by the scruff of the neck, take the responsibility upon his shoulder's and pull the team through.
Mark my word's he'll be captain one day.
This.
I really do feel though that Gardner can be a massive player for us as he's in the same mould as Gerrard (Not comparing their ability btw)I am. Such is my belief in his talent. Anyone who remembers when Gerrard first broke into the Liverpool first team will remember he didn't shine for his first full season, but everyone connected with Liverpool knew his class was there. He took a bit of time finding his feet at Prem level, but once he got there (and it wasn't until he was 20 or older), he didn't look back.
But no, the people who are saying he should be let go are right. If he was going to step up, he would have by now. I mean, he's been back from his 18 month injury for like a full year.

He was gifted the oppurtunity at cov and did well. Came back to villa and was nowhere near prem standard...i remember someone told me his pass completion rate in one match last season and it was laughable.
As i say im not trying to say hes not a good player because hes an absolute tank in the next gen and was vital last season for them but the Wilshere/ox-lade statement is very extreme.
So much of the reason for that is the respective sides in which each player featured. How many Arsenal players are going to be in a position to receive the ball from Wilshere compared to when Gardner had the ball fizzed at him in a sort of "deal with that, son" way by Collins?
Put my one-footed, skinny self in the Arsenal side and watch me complete a few passes.
The sides in which the two come through count massively, it's like someone mentioned on another thread (Bannan, I think), about how Iniesta wouldn't be super effective in our side last season because last season nobody wanted or moved for the ball.
In short, Gardner is class and will thrive in a side that plays football, like our reserves do (admittedly at reserve level, but they were infinitely better to watch than our first team under 'him').
So wilshire isn't better than gardner its just the media hype and playing at arsenal makes him look good?
I'm excited about the potential player gardner could be but lets be realistic. Currently he is no where near the level that Jack Wilshire is at. Good players stand out no matter what team they are playing in.
Jack wilshire is winning england caps and winning arsenal player of the year over fabregas and RVP. Gardner is still a player who comes off the bench and fails to impress.
I'm not writing gardner off, he needs time and minutes on the pitch to improve and show us his full potential. But there is no way you can argue hes at the same level of jack wilshire.
I'm not saying that at all. As I said elsewhere, Gardner is 18 months (at least) worth of development and playing time behind Wilshere due to his injury. Add in that it's not as easy as picking up where you left off when you come back from said injury, and really you have to look at where they both were in terms of ability before the injury. In my mind, I would say they were pretty even, but Wilshere had London hype and played in a team that allowed him to see more of the ball. Also, once both stepped up to the Seniors, Wilshere got to train/develop with the likes of Van Persie and Fabregas.
All I'm trying to say is I think there could well be a Wilshere-level of player in Gary Gardner and, due to his injury, he definitely deserves a bit of time to be allowed to get there. I believe he's that good.
-
It's worth noting that Gerrard didn't debut for Liverpool until he was 18 (would have certainly been matched or bettered by Gardner had he not been injured for 18 months) and was utter dross for his first few games. Didn't really start to shine and start pulling the strings until he was 20 or so.
Gardner is much more similar to Gerrard than Wilshere in terms of playing style.

He was definitely on a level with the likes of Wilshere before his injury, possibly even rated a little higher. Whether he can get back to that after being out for so long is a different story, but I'm convinced he will. He's the Mutt's Nutts.

Also, it was nice to see Marc Albrighton there supporting the youngsters.
Yeah will defiantly encourage them to try and push on, thats for sure..
He let his Dad pay for his J20, though. The cheek!
-
Yeah, Grealish looked class, we always looked like doing something when he was on the ball.
Everyone looked impressive in that I can't remember anyone being sloppy in possession. My mate (who plays at right back for Boldmere) said he's never been given the run around so much! Let's also not forget that Boldmere actually beat the Villa kids 3-2 last pre-season.
Very early days but pretty encouraging.

Reserves looked very tidy last night. The two full backs really impressed.

Alistair Campbell just tweeted:
Apologies to Sunday Mail Glasgow. Was given wrong info re Stiliyan Petrov. Treatment going well but not yet in remission @beatbloodcancerPretty fuming about this. Surely you'd make absolutely sure that you had this correct before putting the news out there?

Love that we sent a private jet to bring Solskjaer in. The Blues board told Hughton "Catch the 45 and get off at the Man On The Moon"

They were fashionable weren't they, the 1990s?

I would imagine he is talking about cameron from what I saw last night. He had an excellent fist half last night, as did Carruthers. For me Cameron though will struggle when he comes against a full back who is as quick as him as I don't believe he is that skillful. Carruthers is the more skillfull out of the two but he just got kicked for most of the night.
DJ had a solid game and looked like he wanted to get the ball down and play football, and was quick to break going forwards.
Gardner didn't do too much last night except score the goals, reminded me of Frank Lampard in that respect.
Graham when he came on looked good and did the best skill of the night in the last minute when he skinned about 4 ajax players and was through on goal before unbelievably the ref brought it back for a foul on him instead of playing the advantage. the Ref got rightly booed by the fans for that.
Our two centre backs looked solid and assured and Neslon-Addy also looked good. Kinsella struggled for me, but he might have just been nervous in front of the fans.
all in all it was a very good performance.
I agree with almost all of this, though I thought Gardner grew into and influenced the game (beyond his goals) more and more as it went on. He always wanted the ball and he tracked back well, too. Johnson was class, really strong performance, but what I liked in terms of shap was that he and Gardner were never both abandoning the middle of the park if one burst forwards; it felt weird to watch a Villa side that had such a strong midfield prescence, actually!
I thought Kinsella did alright against their no. 7 who looked a threat in the first half, but got exposed a few times.
Agreed about Cameron - superb last night but a lot of it was down to pace. Not to worry, though, with how young these are.
The ref pulling the game back after Graham's superb play was outrageous! He seemed a bit of a jobsworth though, constantly calling for free kicks to be re-taken over a matter of a yard etc.
One of the things that I liked was how often we just wanted to play the ball short and keep on going when we won a free kick. It was a nice little indication of how these are being coached to play. Though, as my mate said, you've got to make sure you're all on the same page with that kind of play, as we played it short from one free kick in the second half just as one of our centre backs had began to get himself into the area!
If anything disappointed me, it was Ajax. Undoubted ability in the team, but they just seemed to want to kick us once we got our noses in front. As a team,I was so impressed with how we didn't give them space to play.
Superb night, superb tonic after watching the first team.
-
Gardner grew into the game tonight after his first goal and was superb. The third goal he made pretty much all by himself. He always wants the ball, rarely loses it and he tracked back very well, too - helping our defence when were caught outnumbered on more than one occasion.
-
Can't wait! Perfect tonic after last night. Watch the kids play with heart and watch them play under staff who encourage them to actually play a bit of football.
-
He'll be playing in the NextGen tomorrow I imagine, so I doubt he'll be in the squad tonight.
-
I would imagine so, but I think it's just the lower Trinity Road that is open so there's a chance it will sell out.
-
Cheers Hogso. No idea where I got that information from, but I was all set to head down there this evening!
-
It is, £3 for ST Holders, £4 if not. Absolute bargain. Villa's promising youth aside, there's always a chance that watching the Ajax youngsters, you could be watching a few players who can on to really make it.
-
7pm KO tonight, try and get down there and support the next generation if you can!

Don't know if this is related, but apparently Gabby was set upon by about 5 lads recently, on his way to the Mailbox from the Arcadian. Got his face bashed up a bit apparently. My Dad's mate works the Mailbox security and reckons the Police used their CCTV so he's seen some of the footage.
-
Can they still qualify with a good result against Ajax?
-
To Aston Villa, Gabby is priceless. I honestly wouldn't swap him with Messi. My favourite Villa player since Merson and I cannot praise him highly enough.
OBE hit the nail on the head. He used to just have raw pace and a decent finish but every season he has added somnething else to his game through hard work on the training ground.
If he could improve his consistancy and further improve his touch and vision, the sky is the limit for him. And he's Villa, just like all of us.
This all day long. Absolute hero.
-
Gabby was absolutely out of this world.
-
The youth really do look exceptional. The hope is that we can one day get that final step right of integrating a lot of them into the first team, like Barcelona (not to be confused with "We will be as good as Barcelona")
Can't wait for the Ajax game.

My Dad's mate taught me that a couple of years ago, I love it.
