  1. I haven't been active here for quite a number of years, but I'm still a regular reader. I've been following this thread for a while now, and when Ilitch was brought up I felt a need to post.

As a fellow Macedonian I'd be fairly excited for him to take the reigns, although his financial backing may pale in comparison with some of the other names thrown up in here. But what we need is sound management, and if he can provide that I'm all for it.

One of the many reasons I chose Villa years ago (despite having no affiliation with them in any shape or form) was because of our lion symbol, which is also a symbol of Macedonia. Maybe it was my calling all along :P, even though it's been a pretty crap one lately.

  2. Back to back wins, all of a sudden things are looking a lot brighter.

I went with Young for MOTM, thought his work rate was outstanding.

I saw the attendance figures and the match on TV, and I seriously wouldn't be surprised if Villa almost had as many fans there as Wigan.

Great atmosphere all game long, keep it up!

  3. Hey everyone,

Really happy about the result against man city, but I'm disappointed I missed the game. I had my alarm set for 4:20am and it didn't go off, so i slept right through the game.

Usually Foxsports would show a replay but I couldn't find the Villa match in the TV Guide.

Any websites out there that have the full game replay in, at least, decent quality? It's a massive win and I don't want to miss it, so any help would be appreciated.

    Cheers.

  4. The problem with Holte enders in the Sky is you'd be isolating the other 3 stands in the ground. It needs to be a song about aston Villa for all villa supporters not just for those lucky enough to sit in the holte End.

Maybe the chorus could be repeated several times, starting with 'Holte enders in the Sky.'

Then maybe 'Trinity Enders in the Sky,' or 'Ellis Enders in the Sky'

This might encourage the other stands to join in, and in particular, do their part when their stand is mentioned.

  5. As you guys said, the tempo is pretty good. Nevertheless, I was messing around with the music file and slowed it down a touch more.

I think it's good as it is, but perhaps if it were a little slower it would allow others to pick up on it and not get their tongues twisted in a knot.

Not to mention it will go for longer this way, and have more slurs. Just another idea.

  6. Against Everton at the weekend it was sung while the Everton players were on the pitch, not waiting in the Tunnels. They didnt have to stand to attention as such, but why should they wait untill they have finished singing before they kick off? Singing while in the tunnels obviously I get, but as soon as the players hit the pitch it should be time to get started surely?

Was the same against us aswell in December, Villa players on the pitch having to wait untill the end of the song before they could kick off..

Ahh ok, I get you now. I guess they just need to improve the timing, as having the song too early may spoil the atmosphere, and obviously having it too late will result in the opposition players waiting on the field as you said.

It's not always easy striking a balance though.

The last few posts do have a point about the song being too wordy, but don't forget this thread is open to other anthem ideas too.

The more choice we have, the better.

  7. Ive been talking to some guys at work about this at work,

Why are Plop allowed to sing walk alone while the players are lined up? Fair enough anything goes before the teams come out etc, but why does the opposite team have to stand and listen to that crap at attention before every game? Are there any other clubs that do this?

I guess it's their ground, so they ultimately call the shots. I see no problem with it, as long as it doesn't delay kick-off in any way.

Here in Australia, a club anthem is played for both teams before the match as the teams run out onto the field, and the winner's theme is once again played at the conclusion of the match. Mind you, that's Aussie Rules Football.

In regards to another poster, the song isn't plastic at all. In fact, as Rob said, it could only bring about positives. Some may be reluctant to sing during the game, but if everybody sings along to an anthem prior to the match, they are more likely to be comfortable or in a mood to join in on other chants throughout the 90 minutes.

It may take a while to convince the entire crowd to join in, but if the Holte sings as one, they will be more inclined to give it a go.

I live in Australia, so I've never been to a Villa match. But hopefully what I'm saying is close enough to the reality of it all, if not just let me know. :winkold:

Yeah it doesn't hold up the kick off, but I just dont see why the opposite team has to stand there and listen to it. Its good for Liverpool as it could intimidate the other team, just cant see it being allowed for every other team to start doing it. What if our anthem became `November Rain' and we made the other team stand there for 15mins before kick off so we could sing it all.. haha.

To break it down, I dont get why the opposition at Anfield has to come out early to listen to that crap.

Not sure I quite understand what you're trying to say mate.

Just to clarify, are the opposition told to stand to attention as if it were a national anthem or such? Or are you referring to the opposition players waiting in the tunnels?

If so, I agree. The opposition shouldn't be forced to stand and listen, but in a sense it is a chant, so there's is not much you can do.

  9. Here are the lyrics to the entire song:

An old cowboy went riding out one dark and windy day

Upon a ridge he rested as he went along his way

When all at once a mighty herd of red eyed cows he saw

A-plowing through the ragged sky and up the cloudy draw

Their brands were still on fire and their hooves were made of steel

Their horns were black and shiny and their hot breath he could feel

A bolt of fear went through him as they thundered through the sky

For he saw the Riders coming hard and he heard their mournful cry

    Yippie yi Ohhhhh

    Yippie yi yaaaaay

    Ghost Riders in the sky

Their faces gaunt, their eyes were blurred, their shirts all soaked with sweat

He's riding hard to catch that herd, but he ain't caught 'em yet

'Cause they've got to ride forever on that range up in the sky

    On horses snorting fire

As they ride on hear their cry

As the riders loped on by him he heard one call his name

If you want to save your soul from Hell a-riding on our range

Then cowboy change your ways today or with us you will ride

Trying to catch the Devil's herd, across these endless skies

    Yippie yi Ohhhhh

    Yippie yi Yaaaaay

    Ghost Riders in the sky

    Ghost Riders in the sky

    Ghost Riders in the sky

Would the whole song be sung or just the first verse? The first verse is definitely the best one in my opinion, as many of you would agree, but I thought I might as well post the whole song so people can have a look.

  10. I think thats a very good idea.

Verse is pretty long but I guess thats the idea of a club anthem.

    Holte Enders in the sky

Is there a google translate for football chants?

If everybody can learn the lyrics and sing that perfect... Surely has to be

'Holte Enders In The Sky ?'

Yeh, I think changing 'Riders' to 'Enders' or 'Villans/Villa' would sound better, and the last line too. But as others said, the song needs to stay in its original form, bar maybe those few words mentioned above.

  11. Sounds great, would the final line 'Ghost Riders in the sky,' be altered to 'Holte enders in the sky' as others have suggested...or would the entirety of the song be kept in its original form?

This is a top suggestion, but maybe launching a competition to get some more people involved and aware of what we are trying to achieve would also assist. I know this would be a hard song to top, but bringing everyones ideas together might even make for some new chants during the 90 minutes of the game.

Aston Villa's facebook group would be the best place to start, as well as a sticky on VT and possibly a link on Villa's homepage? Easier said than done though, of course.

  12. I was watching Liverpool vs Everton yesterday after the Villa match and I gotta say that 'You'll never walk alone' anthem before the game sounds great.

It has probably been said time and time again, but it would be great if Villa had a pre-game anthem like this, something slow and meaningful where the whole crowd can join in.

    Agree

I personally think we need to use 'oh when the Villa go marching in' but the slow version that builds up over about two verses then goes into the normal version. It's very apt to sing that just before the players are walking out and can you imagine the whole ground singing it?

    ohhhh whenn the villaaaaaaaaaaa

    go marching innnnnnnnnnnnnnnnn

ohhh whenn the viiillllaaaa goooo maaarrcchhhiiing iinnnn

i wannnaaa beeeeeeee innnnn theee numbeerrrrr

ohhhh when the villlaaaaa goooo marrrching innnnnnnnn

Yeh, that would sound great sung slowly...a slower pace chant not only lasts longer, but has a different kind of effect, so who knows why so many of them are rushed through nowadays.

Here's the spurs version of that chant sung slowly to begin with and gradually gaining momentum.

Stealing straight from the yiddos? Cringe....

We can come up with something better. I'll come back when I've thought of something, you do the same!

That's true, we can come up with something more original, despite that chant being used pretty much all over the world.

In a sense you want something unique. I'll have a search around tomorrow mate and see what I can find. :)

    Agree

I do agree, but YNWA is obviously engraved into the culture of Liverpool FC, the fans sing it with passion because it means something to all of them.

If we introduced something, it'd just be a pre game sing along.

You're right about the fact that it would at first be only a pre game sing along, but say 15-20 years down the track, it too could become apart of the Villa culture and meaning.

The song just has to be appropriate and meaningful, and with time it will develop into a club anthem in which the entire crowd can sing along with passionately.

It is at least worth a try, as it would definitely add to the atmosphere as is seen with Liverpool's pre-game anthem. It would take some considerable effort to develop, but with the right support it is surely something to consider.

  15. Boom Boom Boom let me hear you say Makoun, Makoun. . .

    ha what a tune

    Lol, love this one.

  16. A good game, plenty of chances at both ends, think we shaded it though. Would of been a good advert for the second city if there weren't so many empty seats.

    SHA fans are a joke.

I laughed when I saw their attendance figures at 22,000.

I don't know the capacity at saint andrews, but for a derby it is pretty pissweak.
