Salty Bet's Dream Cast Casino

Recommended Posts

Copy pasta time, because this guy says it better than I ever could:

This is blatantly stolen from gaf, all credit to a poster on there for this.

Brief explanation, it's a site that streams mugen fights 24/7, alongside a chatroom that allows you to bet (fictional) money on the outcome. The game picks random fighters from a vast pool, gives you a brief stare off while you ponder the odds, before they fight with their AI.  The amazingness comes from many places. Lots of the fighters are ridiculous, broken, some even drawn in MSpaint and completely stupid. The fights can be utter annhilation, or tense evenly balanced affairs. Some fighters are beyond all levels of the absurd, literally all shapes and sizes from an inch high to screen filling dinosaurs.

I've witnessed bouts that lasted all of 15 seconds for 3 rounds, (A black Strider Hiryu vs a tiny Waifu from some obscure japanese anime - bloodbath), or fighters from Capcom's Cyberbots kicking the **** out of the Simba from SNES Lion King. The term salt comes from an Americanism for bitterness as far as I can tell. As in crying salty tears when you lose.

The chatroom itself is hilarious, not a COD style bunch of idiots, more like a load of funny Otakus lamenting their misplaced wagers, as a 7 foot gigantic piece of corn destroys SF Alpha 3 Akuma and costs them the last of their cash. A final and brilliant bonus is that alongside all of this ridiculousness is a constant streaming jukebox of the most random assed music ever, often brilliantly complimenting the fights in ways you couldnt think possible.  Everything from Pink Floyd, to FFX battle music, crazy jazz, recognisable SF2 background tunes, bizarre Japanese soft rock with endless guitar solos.

I've already spent hours watching/listening to this stuff and ive not even participated in the betting yet. It's something that you could show to a non gamer, or a parent, or partner, and they;d just not comprehend half of the language, the action, or its reason to even exist. Yet it's hypnotic, addictive as hell, often hilarious and an amazing time waster.

Been playing it for a few days, it's a good way to waste time. Most money I made was Robocop against some tentacle robot thing, most people bet on the thing.

MUGEN! Man, there were a bunch of us who used to have a lot of fun with that when at uni. It is truly a nerds wet dream. I've just had a look on the elecbyte website, adn they've just released a new beta yesterday. Virtual betting is a wonderful way to use it though, cudos to the guy who thought that up.

I've been stopping by SaltyBets for the past few days, since Jeff Gerstmann tweeted about it. It's crazy how something so stupid can be so fascinating and chew up so much time. As someone too gutless, poor, overly cautious and easily addicted to ever bother with real online gambling, a fake money betting website based on stupid absurd robots fighting eachother is perfect for me.

When you sign up you get 400 'Salty Bucks'. I did quite well with a bunch of stupid random bets and got to about $1500. At that stage I went all in on a huge guy called 'The Blob' who lost 3 rounds straight, in 1 hit each time. Getting back out of the mines is tough, I only just broke triple digits again.

I just lost $50 betting on Antman because he was beaten by some cutsey anime witch... all whilst listening to the Ghostbusters theme.

This is truly amazing. I'm addicted.

I love Mugen.

I just watched Green Arrow face off against some Ryu hack.

Green Arrow will be missed. From the getgo Ryu-hack was machinegunning hadukens and launching into insane hurricane kick combos, absolute obliteration.

I suck at it, Ilose a good 80% of the time it seems... I'm down to $100. So much fun though and so very addictive. I just saw a character from DBZ fight Spongebob Squarepants.

Just won $600 by betting on this guy.  He has the maddest moves I've ever seen, including a belly bounce attack which is powered by a lit fart.  His win animation is cool too. :)

Yeah that does happen a lot.

Also, tiny little anime girls who look like they couldn't beat up an ant, often seem to win.
