I don't often open this particular thread as I don't watch Premier League football and I must say, I am amazed at how many non Man United or Liverpool fans actually give a **** what happens when they play each other.

Because many people are football fans and like to watch football?

Well in that case why do they need to have any one particular game rammed down our throats by the media? That Merseyside v Manchester crap made me feel sick every time I saw it. Surely if people were going to watch it they'd just watch it.

Anyway. I won't be watching that plastic nonsense anytime soon.

People that wanted to watch it,, did watch it. You seem to be under the impression that these people work for the media or something? The United game wasn't actually talked about much on here, the Everton-City game was almost strictly post schadenfreude on Guardiola.

I don't think it was rammed down anyone's throats on here. You didn't want it anyway, so what's the problem?

I'm talking about the constant advertising of it on Sky. Not on here.

OK but no need to aggressive mate. I'm a Villa fan and don't give two ***** about either Liverpool or Man United and I find the fawning over them in the media irritating. And then I wonder why so many fans of other clubs care so much about the likes of Man United and Liverpool and it bemuses me.

If you don't get that line of thinking then I can't help...

Some people are total marks for the Sky bullshit, they can't be saved unfortunately.

He's broken the record, but I don't think anyone would seriously suggest he's our greatest ever striker. Certainly nobody has said that here. It's an accomplishment nevertheless though.

Linekar stands out for me, but how many people saw the likes of Greaves or Charlton play? They were tremendous players for their time, but who knows how good they'd be in the modern game. It's impossible to really compare players across eras, so much has changed.

Rooney might just about make it into the top 5. Maybe.

its difficult to compare eras. Charlton was more of an attacking midfield player really. But for me its about when you score the goals as much as the quantity. Greaves missed out on a  world cup winners medal. Linekar produced it when it mattered in the big games so I'd just give him the edge over Shearer, Owen, Rooney and Greaves.

Manchester United say they are the first sports club in England to appoint a full-time counter-terrorism manager.

The post has been filled by a former inspector from Greater Manchester Police's specialist search unit.

The appointment, revealed at a recent club forum, comes amid significant additional security measures introduced at Old Trafford on matchdays.

Vehicles are now routinely checked as they enter car parks, and supporters are searched at turnstiles.

United's Premier League game against Bournemouth in May was postponed when the stadium was evacuated after what turned out to be a fake bomb was found in a toilet.

It had been left behind in error following an exercise earlier in the week.

In November, two supporters on a stadium tour hid in an Old Trafford toilet in the hope of seeing United's Premier League game against Arsenal. They were eventually found and handed over to police.

Last year, security expert Baroness Ruth Henig called for licensing laws to be changed to force entertainment venues around the UK to undergo counter-terror training.

I doubt that advertising is aimed at the fanbase

In fairness they're a target as all high profile sports events are now.

Didn't a group try to get into the Stade de France during the Paris attacks? I believe they couldn't get into the ground but set off the explosives outside which were actually audible on TV. The idea was that those bombs were meant for the crowd.

depends on your definition on "fanbase"....do i think plop + united have a bunch of fans if never heard about the game wouldnt watch it....sure. But those same fans would still class themselves as part of fanbase.... Keep shoving it down their throats and theyll watch

And also biging a game like that it just 101 advertisement for a product right? Seen everywhere in world?

i just get little confused on the Sky hate for advertising their product.

Dramatic over the top shit sells. (basically clickbait articles  for the football world) its odd...but it sells and gets viewers

@OFTR. sorry usually drunk posting so i apologize if aggressive posting. :)    But im not a fan but i care about two of the biggest teams  in country playing against each other same way i care about barca vs madrid in la liga. Its exciting...there is good players...and theres plenty of funny moments if one team loses

advertisement is super important to me tbh...i havent watched a single FNF game because advertisement doesnt hit me from Tuesday-Friday.. But shoving a game down my throat for monday over weekend...makes me watch it all the time. Its same for other games on sunday  etc really. If i had sky constant shoving a big weekend..(or mainly friday) .ill be sure to check it out

Agreed with all of this.

I don't really know the Premier League fixture list since we're not in it anymore, so I wouldn't have known which games were on if not for the advertising. Sure, it was a bit much, but they have to cast a wide net so they make sure they catch everyone. Sometimes I've seen Sunday games advertised and decided not to bother. But I decided to sit in and watch these games and they were worth it IMO.

It was generally a good advert for the Premier League as well.

Wayne Rooney, you could argue that he has never achieved what he should've in the game based on his level as a youth; but to break BC's record for Man Utd is still an incredible achievement.

Really? Surely being England and Manchester United's record scorer is above anything they'd have thought he'd achieve as a kid.

I think as a kid he had the potential to be like Ronaldo and Messi; be right up there in the top echelons of best players in the world. Never quite hit those heights.

He was never that good and certainly never had the dedication of me professionalism of those two.

Rooney was a very very good player but no more than that, his records for club and country are as much about longevity as they are ability.

Rooney isn't even in the top two strikers I've seen in an England shirt. Both Shearer and Owen were better strikers than Rooney, they just suffered far more with injuries and didn't have the same longevity, they even managed to score in tournaments!

I think his records are also about pandering to him and building teams around him, especially with England and to the detriment of the team (but you're not allowed to talk about that) no doubt someone will turn the position change in to a defence of him but it's because of his own selfish style, if he actually played as a 9 or a 10 then I think he'd be a very special player but he doesn't he plays as Roy of the rovers
