Isn't this the Barry Bannan Bonanza???? - after this match, his value will soar and he'll be off to sunnier climes.

I think it's a shite time to have a 'friendly' - 3 days before the Premier League kicks off?!?!?! WTF

Waste of time IMO

It's quite telling that two of our worst players can make it into the Scotland squad. Truly a dark era for Scottish football.

is it as bad as Emile HEskey picking up 60 caps or players like Jake Livermore or Jonjo Shelvey getting caps

Not in a long shot. England may not be great and we've got a particularly poor generation of players at the moment but we're not that bad.

Anyway, it's not like Ireland are doing that well either are they?

It's somewhere between Paul McShane getting 30(!  ) and those two you listed.  ;)

Hoping Bannan some how scores a tap in from 1 yard from a knock on in the penalty area so his stock rises higher than that of a hamster turd

We might have a chance of selling him then

Hodgson is going to get two chances to beat Scotland:

England boss Roy Hodgson is to take charge of the country's under-21 side for one match as the search continues for Stuart Pearce's successor.

Hodgson will lead the under-21s against Scotland at Bramall Lane on 13 August.

"There is an opportunity while the recruitment process goes on to work with this squad and it is something I very much wanted to do," said Hodgson.

Pearce's contract was not extended after England lost all three games in June's European Under-21 Championship.

Hodgson will take charge of the England senior side against Scotland the evening after at Wembley as usual.

The Football Association are advertising for a "proven leader with a wealth of coaching experience"  to replace Pearce with former Portsmouth, Blackpool and Blackburn manager Michael Appleton, the FA's former head of elite development Gareth Southgate and England Under-20 coach Peter Taylor all linked to the post.

The FA expect to fill the position before the European Championship qualifier against Moldova on 5 September.

The meeting with Scotland, which is part of the 20th anniversary celebrations of anti-racism campaign Kick It Out, is England's only match before then.

"I watch the under-21 fixtures and I was in Israel for the European Championship but, as a coach, nothing can beat the training field and the team hotel for getting to know players properly," added Hodgson.

"In a World Cup year it makes absolute sense while there is the chance to do it."

Pearce claimed his side's poor performance in the European Championship was down to the players, with goalkeeper Jack Butland agreeing.

However the Football Association opted not to renew their agreement with the former Manchester City boss, ending his six-year stint in charge of the side.

To be fair, its a big game for us scots, a chance to beat you lot is always fun.

We had a good result against croatia and we will be up for it.  Meanwhile your boys will think you just have to turn up to win.

Looking forward to it.

With it being only a few days before the Prem season starts I doubt we even put out a half decent team through 'injuries and withdrawals'

It's a farcical time to have a 'friendly'

It's a bit like a pre-season friendly between Villa and Coventry. Villa fans really couldn't give a s**t about it, Coventry would be all excited about the prospect of potentially getting one over on their rival (in their mind).

Growing ticketing concern as England v Scotland struggles to sell out

The Football Association has defended its ticketing policy for England’s first meeting with Scotland for 14 years after it emerged the game was in danger of not selling out.

The FA had been confident of a full house when it decided to allow only England supporters who had previously attended the side’s matches to apply for the Aug 14 game, which was arranged to mark the governing body’s 150th anniversary.

A spokesman said last month the FA expected the game to sell out “fairly quickly” but, with less than two weeks to go, there are still around 10,000 tickets remaining.

The FA is refusing to release those for general sale, having admitted one of the reasons for limiting applications to England fans who had attended previous games was to prevent Scotland supporters buying seats in the home end.

It also has no plans to increase the allocation of 20,000 tickets given to the Scottish Football Association in an attempt to limit those travelling to official supporters groups.

The FA spokesman said: “I don’t think we should be ashamed of that and suddenly change a ticketing strategy to sell a remaining 6,000-7,000 if that is still the case by this time next week.

“The benefits don’t outweigh the benefits of keeping it among a closed group for both our fans and Scotland fans. Is it enough of a benefit to have them sold and not know who is buying them?”

Mark Perryman, convener of LondonEnglandFans, claimed the FA’s failure to sell out the Scotland game exposed a wider problem. He said: “The support has been in decline since 2010, because the team is playing poorly and other sports are doing considerably better.”

Doesn't surprise me.   Too many international friendlies, and they are still seen as meaningless games by huge sections of England fans. Even though it was a decade ago I genuinely think the days of Sven making 8-10 substitutions during a friendly cheapened the game to the point where it will take years for people to start caring again.  FIFA actually had to change the rules (imposing a limit of six substitutions in a friendly) because of that, but people still remember years of ridiculous fixtures that were over as a spectacle after 55 minutes.  Still, some of us did get to see Chris Powell in an England shirt.

Friendlies within confederation make no sense to me. Do clubs in the same league play friendlies against each other (aside from foreign adventures, but that's a whole other beast... England/Scotland might well sell more tickets elsewhere in the former Empire than at Wembley)?

With UEFA centralizing the TV rights for qualifiers and expanding the Euros to the point that nobody but the biggest five or six countries can seriously try to host, why not replace the Euros and World Cup qualifiers with a three-year long league? They're already almost halfway there.

53 members of UEFA ... Two upper divisions of 18 and a third division of 17.

First division (top 10 qualify for World Cup, bottom 8 relegated) [to make it a little more concrete, I'm going on the Elo ratings]

Spain, Germany, Netherlands, England, Italy, Portugal, Russia, Croatia, France, Sweden, Belgium, Switzerland, Bosnia, Greece, Ukraine, Czech Rep, Ireland, Romania

Second division (top 2 qualify for World Cup, top 8 promoted, bottom 10 relegated)

Denmark, Norway, Bulgaria, Hungary, Serbia, Poland, Israel, Finland, Turkey, Scotland, Montenegro, Austria, Slovenia, Wales, Belarus, Slovakia, Albania, Armenia

Third division (winner qualifies for World Cup, top 10 promoted)

Macedonia, Georgia, Estonia, Iceland, Latvia, Lithuania, Cyprus, Northern Ireland, Azerbaijan, Moldova, Kazakhstan, Malta, Faroe Islands, Liechtenstein, Luxembourg, Andorra, San Marino
