Villa pre-season results not important?

I agree we need a winning mentality but I rather the players get their fitness up and take it easy in the first few preseason games then we go out all guns blazing and we pick up some serious injuries.

Pre season is just as much about identifying weak spots in the team as well as fitness and making the team gel.

I've not seen the game yesterday, but by conceding a goal will have Lambert with the boys out on the training pitch trying to ensure we don't concede in that manner again.

Seeing what work and trying new things, formations, tactics without any recourse is what pre season is all about.

Their goal was a 30yrd free kick into the corner - pretty decent strike!

Mods; if better placed elsewhere, please feel free to remove, merge or whatever.

I see lots of VT'ers proclaiming that pre-season results are not important and that pre-season is "all about fitness". Obviously, I agree that it is important, but it is not everything. In my opinion, results do matter - quite simply because it could say quite a bit about a winning mentality. To me, it does not matter whether we are pre-season, off-season or playing a PL match, the ultimate goal of every game should be to win. Villa have for years, again in my opinion, been troubled by an attitude that, "it does not really matter", "at least we got a good run out and improved our fitness", we got close" etc. This applies not only to pre-season but in general. We as fans and the Club as such have in my view become used to being mediocre. Where is the winning mentality? We hardly see ManU or Chelsea loosing, or even drawing, many  pre-season games, do we? (do not bother finding examples of where they have lost - you know what I mean). Why? Well, I am sure it is partly because they have for years have a mentality where mediocrity is not accepted. You play to win, that's it.

Now, I am not predicting the end of the world because we fail to beat a 5th Level German team. No reason to panic based on one result, and no reason to describe me as a drama queen etc. Today was not just a one-off result - we are too often also in competitive matches losing or drawing where we really should have won. Again; the mentality and approach have been not good enough on too many instances. How many times have we been knocked out of "easy" European games (Rapid Wien is not a very good team, trust me). Bradford anyone? Doncaster? Losing at home in PL to bottom of the League teams? it has been going on for years. In order to change this, it has to start in pre-season, really instilling a winning mentality and an attitude that only winning is good enough. Thus, I do not buy into this "results do not matter stuff". They do, and to us they should matter more than to others because we are behind a lot of teams with respect to having the right mentality. And, as for today's game;  Lederhosen SV or whatever should be a team which we should comfortably beat, even if all Villa players were called off the beach with one day's notice. It's 5th Level FFS, 1-1 is simply not good enough, pre-season or not. And, they are in pre-season too. We need to be much more focused on results.

Most concerning thing was that once again we only held the lead for around 20 minutes. It still seems the opposition (not matter what level) can score against us when they really need to. For all the fuss about Bentekke - it will be the other end of the pitch that costs us next season.

Remember that season we hammered Inter MIlan, one of the best teams in Europe at the time, 3-0 in pre season and went on to win the league?

Pre season results are only good for one thing. To use as ammunition to whatever argument you want to peddle. If you're overly positive, you'll use a win (or a good draw) in pre season to back up your argument that we're going places.

If you're overly negative you'll use a loss, (or a bad draw) to back up your argument that we're doomed to years of failure under this shit manager/chairman/captain/defence (delete as appropriate)

The rest of us sit in the middle, safe in the knowledge that pre season results mean more or less jack shit in the grand scheme of things.

These results aren't too important - especially the first match back and fielding two different teams either half.

Also, there's been a lot of changes within the squad already, 6 new players in and cast-offs not included. It will take a little time for the squad to blend and adjust.

From the limited highlights on AVTV yesterday looked like a good workout - there were plenty of positives for sure but still obvious we lack that one player who can open up a defence (but at least the club are also aware and if rumours are to be believed its a position were looking to sign a player in)

I'll be more worried if we start getting tanked a few weeks prior to kick off in the Prem but have no worries that that will happen.

if people are complaining now i dread to think what it's going ot be like in here after the first half a dozen games of the season. we've got an incredibly tough start so people worrying abotu preseason results are going to prabably shit the bed then.

It's pre-season FFS.
