Do they have a browser?

It was this which caught my eye and made me consider them. No ideas how genuine it is or of any other browsers/search engines are as privacy friendly (asking here was the first research I did!).

I tend to use DDG now, but it turns out tracking and building profiles it is part of building a great search engine, because DDG is passable at best. It's good enough, most of the time, but harder work to get results anywhere near as relavant as Google's.

Once you've used Google services for a while and they know who you are, where you are, and the things you usually click on, you don't really need to be very good at using a search engine anymore. DDG is taking some getting used to.

So what you're saying is use Google to find decent porn and DDG for everything else.

So, with Firefox 57 breaking a truckload of good extensions, is anyone going to switch? I checked mine and all but X-notifier will die. Most dev's I've seen will abandon it because 57 will not allow the deep digging they require.

I'm a bit sad frankly. :(

To answer my own question, Waterfox will continue down the XUL/XPCOM trail, so support for addons will continue there. Mine are working at first glance. If the addon-devs will keep up and continue remains to be seen

My Waterfox started behaving badly on some sites, different Google services especially ground to a halt.

Found (inferior) substitues for my extentions on Firefox.

It's bloody fast, I'll give it that.

Well, here we are again, Firefox devs doing their outmost to piss me off. For the last 3 years I've been a happy camper and most stuff works. Now they've added a new UI called Proton and it's....well its not nice. A bookmark junkie like myself was introduced to a lot of spacing between the bookmarks rendering it to a scrollfest.

Time to try waterfox again I guess.

Welcome back to the slowest moving thread on VillaTalk!

I've just downloaded and started using Brave, a Chromium-based browser that doesn't do all the nefarious bits Chrome does.

First impressions are good. Looks like Chrome, uses Chrome extensions, loads very quickly and uses less memory.

Exactly 6 months on, by coincidence, and I'm still using Brave on both my laptop and now my phone.

Top quality.

How much do you pay to content creators out of interest?

I've had it set to auto-contribute since I first started but have just checked and no auto-contributions have been made.  This means I'm currently sitting on $7.42.

It's going to kill all the sites that depend on advertising revenue. Shame.

Of the sites I frequent, most of them are for shopping.  The ones that aren't are either huge (like Twitter and Facebook) or I make voluntary contributions to them (like VT and Futbin).

For once I've got a fairly clear conscience.

I assumed so, I suspect that's not true of most users though.

As of FF 93 you can undo it and get proper spacing of the bookmarks, wohooooooo. (though considered unsupported)

I’ve just upgraded to iOS 15 and it has Safari with the url box at the bottom. It’s really weird but makes sense on a mobile device. It’ll take some getting used to.

There’s an annoying downside to this on VT as the popup notifications which appear at the bottom of the screen are obscured by the url address bar.

@limpid Is there anything that can be done about that?

it'll get fixed at some point by the developers. Surely even Apple aren't so controlling that they won't let you turn it off.

It actually looks like someone somewhere has fixed this already. Notifications now appearing above the url bar
