Please Disable Multi Quote!

supernova26

Question

It's driving me (and no doubt many others) having to scroll down walls of text all the time because numpties are using this function needlessly! It's a nightmare for mobile phone and tablet readers! You only need a quote function no a multi quote, the conversation still runs fine without it.

Please disable it as it's making the forum unusable!

:)

I've already broken it

Using IPhone 5 iOS 6.14

Safari and Villatalk lite ( as the full version gives me a bug mentioned previously :) )

http://www.villatalk.com/index.php/topic/9521-online-pornography-to-be-blocked-by-default-pm-to-announce/page-7#entry1021376

I managed it again in the general thread but corrected that one

But it's clearly getting around the 3 quote max .. And ten screwing up the formatting

You've managed to paste the bbcode with the bb editor off. The formatting is fine, but you've done something strange with cut and paste. The site has always let you do that. Your message doesn't contain any quotes as you've mangled it. If you edit it (in the full version and toggle the editor twice (the little button in the top left of the edit panel), then it will be re-interpreted.

all I'm doing is hitting the quote button (like this) and typing in my reply

it appears that when this has exceeded the 3 quote limit  , my replying is posted regardless  , but it is carrying out it's own formatting  .. I.e I'm not doing any editing

Would a far easier option be to for people who feel mutliquote is being abused or used poorly to report those posts to the mods who can tidy/politely request posters to stop as they see fit?

Such a system would meet everyone's needs would it not?

I'm going to be a dissenting voice here. It appears we've decided to compromise the forum's functionality to accommodate people with a poor phone browser or poor scrolling skills. I disagree with that approach and I speak as someone who browses VillaTalk from both an android phone using Opera Classic and a laptop using Firefox.

How do you define poor browser or poor phone scrolling skills? Is there a skill to scrolling walls of endless text you've already read?

Looking around the main forum the threads looks a lot cleaner and easier to read, and the conversation is flowing. There are still people using it needlessly (it's worse when they quote huge posts) but nowhere near as bad as it was before. More and more people will be using tablets/mobile phones so it makes sense to limit it. Ideally I would remove it completely just having a quote button but I'm not sure on the implementation of this.

I tend to duplicate quotes quite  by accident a lot but have managed to spot it and delete one before I post. This is with the desktop and mobile. I don't see how we could avoid it or even why that would happen in the first place. It's as though I'm hitting multiquote and quote instead of just quote. Maybe I'm going insane. I blame doug.

I was on the verge of suggesting this very thing as a 'clean' alternative until I saw it has already been discussed and it was deemed the forum would be 'virtually unuseable' without some form of multi-quote, which is fair enough. FWIW I don't mind being the dissenting voice that ends up being completely ignored :) I just happen not to mind loadsa multi-quoting when it happens, that's all.
