He was the Stanley Matthews of his era. A one-trick pony, maybe, but at that one trick he was the best in the world.

His Range of passing, workrate, dead ball specialist, leader... which of these is his one trick?

Top bloke and a Legend.

Probably got us the Olympics as well.

I agree. Makes his omission from the GB Football Squad disgusting treatment considering he travelled the world campaigning for it and he still clearly can cut it (but you still never hear him maoning about it).

And a decent guy for someone who is a very rich and idolised celeb. Somebody on the radio last night pointed out that when there was a campaign a few years ago to get Premiership footballers to donate a week's wages to nurses, only 16 agreed to do it; by contrast, Beckham donated ALL his PSG wages to a Paris childrens' home.

Probably got us the Olympics as well.

He could  afford to, his personal wealth is probably 200 million. I think he was one of the best English players of his generation but no way was he a great player. Fergy got rid of him.

Dead ball. There were others who were as good (or better) at the rest.

Guess many on here are too young to remember the Brazilian Zico. He was A brilliant dead ball specialist. 52 goals in 72 internationals compared to Beckham's 17 in 115 internationals. Zico was not a forward he was an attacking midfield player.

But he's not a 1 trick pony if he is the worlds best at one part of his game and one of the best at others.

He is a good footballer, no doubt, and his professionalism for football was fantastic up to the point wehe decided to retire from it and played in the US.

But how and why people seems convince that he is somehow, a top boke? or a nice guy? From what? Not saying he is a JT but why and what has he done to be labelled as a top bloke?

Captained the national side, appears to give 100% every time he plays, his work for the olympic bid and the games themselves, the way he comes across in interviews, donating his entire salary to charity over the past 6 months, I'm sure there's plenty more.

waddle has claimed he wouldnt get in the top 1k premier league players

i think my judgement of him has changed as ive got older, used to think he was a typical overrated utd player, especially when he scored that goal, thought he was all media darling and was one of many who hated him when he got sent off in 98 (id have been 14) glad he left utd and i could view him differently, got a lot of respect for him, think the thick tag is unfair (he's worth £160m he cant be that thick) been great for english football in comparison to some of the muppets we seem to idolise now, should be knighted very shortly IMO
