Nuclear War (next week?)

People seem to forget that NK always make outrageous statements like this, and they're always for their own people.

They don't actually plan on nuking anyone (they're not that dumb), they just have to keep up the pretences that they're a military power. Show their own people how strong they are. When they inevitably don't get invaded it'll all be down to their military might and threatening destruction on everyone, rather than the reality where people just don't really give a shit about NK.

Don't think DPRK have the capability to hit the US with a missile.

They probably have the ability to hit the western half of Alaska where they might kill a few seals or a polar bear or something.  They don't have the range to hit any place where people live though.   Even if they did fire a missile it would be shot out of the sky by US jets and then Obama would democracy North Korea into oblivion.  I'd imagine the North Korean government know exactly what they are up against if they try to pull some shit against America, sadly it appears their civilians have all been brainwashed into thinking that the DPRK are some kind of superpower. They have no idea how badly they would lose.

The only worry is that they get pushed into a corner and see no way out other than a war with their neighbours.

But the south already have 100x the capabilitys of the north, all the north have is a large military with outdated weapons.

It would probably be best for the people of north Korea if they did get invaded to save them from what i imagine is life of misery, i recommend the book nothing to envy by barbera demmerick to see how they live

One of the biggest problems that the North have is that it kinda suits everybody else to have them in no mans land.  South Koreans probably want reunification, I'd imagine there are plenty of families which got cut in half following the Korean war and the splitting of the country but there is no way South Korea can afford to take on 25 million refugees in one go.

The civilians may have indoctrination forced on them but they are far from brain washed idiots .... Of course i wouldnt expect any "arab spring" type uprising there any tine soon but the population ( of pyongyang at least ) have quite a good inderstanding of whats going on in the world and their place in it , And they even know they lost to Portugal 7-0 in the World Cup in SA

20 years ago the NK's apparently felt obliged to spit and punch at westerner visitors to show loyalty , now you are met with a smile and a wave and they want to engage you in conversation one of them even moved their bags off the seat on the metro so I could sit next to him and have a chat

One of the talks at the DMZ the lady referred to the "surrender " document ( we of course know it as the armistice ) but you could tell she didn't believe it and having followed the line then referred to it as the armistice there on in

Demick :)

Sanctions plays a part in that though surely ?? ... I saw people digging fields with their bare hands , they don't even have simple tools yet alone tractors ... Plus the land is rather arid and not suitable for growing crops

In Pyongyang We were kinda free to wander as long as we stayed in the areas we were allowed to go :) It's weird to describe , it's like we were presented with a Trueman show with a cast of thousands but I did manage to slip away for a while and saw a near riot break out as a store opened with a limited supply of bread ... I also observed people queing up with ration cards at some form of food stall... It's such a surreal place

i have been fascinated with the place since seeing a doc on national geographic years ago, never felt the need to go though with the stuff thats on youtube, you can take there tour of the country whilst sat in your living room.

the book i mentioned (and got the author nearly right) is a good read though, and mentioning NK tractors http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-2127534/Learning-drive-tractor-North-Korea--exactly-rocket-science.html

I can watch porn on the Internet but its not as good as the real thing :)

Ps

I know its the Heil but even so its the sorta general western view of the place that pisses me off

the birthplace of hated former leader Kim Jong Il, who did so much to ensure North Korea remained such a backwater country.

That's because the game was (famously) shown live on TV in North Korea in the wake of their good showing vs Brazil. It was the first time a North Korea game has been shown on TV, was it the last?

Now I'm no expert on the matter, but it looks to me like you have cherry picked the one bit of outside information that we all know that North Korea know about the rest of the world. How many more are there?

I picked that one as it was the one the Sun ? "Famously" ran their story about and thus an antidote people here would be familiar with .....

In theory media is strictly controlled , But overseas radio is easily accessible and TV as well in some areas , even if it may be illegal to do so (presumably )...The US govt have even carried out research and found access to news is increasing.... It's like Facebook is banned in China but in reality you walk down the streets of Beijing and every bugger with a mobile phone is on it ( ok slight exaggeartion but you get the point ) .....you can't stop the flow of information these days ... indeed talking of which Facebook is now accessible in the DPRK in some of the hotels , I'm sure it won't be long before that expands , legally or otherwise !!

But I'm not sure what information / proof you would like me to give tbh ..I mean obviously the people we met were the more informed / maybe even planted as per my Truman show comment. ....but the (April 2012) rocket launch that blew up was public knowledge out there and this had happened the day before we flew in . .....it's a Korean joke that the Americans can't have got to the moon in 69 as clearly Korea would have got there first if it were possible .... Obviously they may not know who won't the Superbowl this year , but would they care ?
