not really though. would paying 6 million less for a title winning french international who hasnt reached his prime, not better than paying big money for an injury prone player like Arteta

It's made out like Newcastle unearthed a gem, reality he was a french international playing in a lille team with the likes of Eden hazard, all those clubs that were scouting hazard never noticed the guy along side him?

Its rare that teams 'unearth gems' like Wenger used to do, when he was successful, now that everyone knows most of the young talent, Wenger hasn't got any advantage in the transfer market apart from the fact that Arsenal are in the champions league.

Forgetting about the players of the past for a minute and returning to the present, Arsenal have just announced half year profits of £17.8m for six months up to the end of November.

Arsenal have announced half-yearly profits of £17.8million for the six months up to the end of November last year.

The profit figures, largely funded by the sale of Robin van Persiespacer.gifto Manchester United, spacer.gif accompany an increased figure of £123.3m in cash reserves, which are up £7m.

The club's financial report states: "The club has no short-term debt and continues to have a robust financial platform.

"The figures show a profit before tax of £17.8 million. This was driven primarily by player sales of £42.5 million.

"Football turnover dropped from £113.5 million to £106 million as a result of four fewer home fixtures compared to the same period last year.

"However, overall operating profits from the club's property operation increased to £1.9 million versus £0.5 million in 2011."

The figures may anger some Arsenalspacer.gif fans, who feel Arsene Wengerspacer.gif needs to spend more on players if the club are to end their trophy drought, which looks set to reach eight seasons.

But Arsenal chairman Peter Hill-Wood said: "Our ability to compete at the top of the game here and in Europe is underpinned by our financial performance, which gives the club strength and independence.

"Our desire is to make everyone connected with Arsenal proud of the club. We know that comes through winning trophies but also through the way we do things and that will remain our constant guide."

And the financial report pointed out that "the accounts also show an investment of £40.9million in signing new players - Lukas Podolski, spacer.gif Santi Cazorla and Olivier Giroud - and the extension of contracts for existing players.

"The club has extended contracts for Jack Wilshere, spacer.gif Theo Walcott, spacer.gif Kieran Gibbs, Aaron Ramsey, spacer.gif Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain and Carl Jenkinson. More recently, the club has signed Nacho Monreal from Malaga.spacer.gif"

Hill-Wood thinks the agreement by the Premier League clubs to bring in financial fair play-style spending controls will help Arsenal.

"These new rules will be good for us, good for the Premier League and good for the game as a whole," he said.

"It is important that we maintain the quality and level of competition if the game is to continue being a compelling spectacle, and we believe the introduction of tighter financial regulation will assist all clubs to compete, while remaining financially responsible."

Anelka was another, definitely.  You can make up your own mind about how known a quantity players like Overmars, Pires, Ljungberg & Petit were. They all had fairly big reputations prior to coming to England though.

For me, Wenger's early success at Arsenal is because he was ahead of the game. He brought English football kicking and screaming into the 21st century by doing things like stopping players going out on the piss every night and have them live like athletes instead. He had a decent overseas scouting network.  Having that at a time when the rest of the league didnt was a recipe for success. Sadly for Wenger now everybody else is doing the things he introduced to the game and his advantage has gone. He has turned Arsenal into a major European power, and the new stadium was bought with prize money that his teams won but I cant see Arsenal winning the title again with Wenger in charge.

Yep that's how I see it.. When he first arrived he was so different and revolutionised English football, extending Adams' career in the process.. He was the first to introduce sports psychology and sports science.. Now that everyone else is doing the same his advantage has gone and can't see them challenging for titles... Still think if the FA were serious about transforming the future of English football they should have broke the bank and got wenger in charge of not only the England team but the entire development from grass roots up. It may have taken a few yrs but the technical ability if the youth players would be so much better than now. Edited by mikeyp102
