This Too Shall Pass

I have to agree with the OP, This, too, shall pass is one I've said to myself many a time.

Otherwise...

This post has had my brain tied up for a good 20 minutes trying to remember where I'd heard it.

Think i'm right in saying that it's a lyric in Metallica's St Anger.

Nah its from Frank Sinatra's  My Way

This too shall pass is a good one. Never heard it before.

i've always tried to live up to the following, which might be a bit different in english as I'm doing a rough translation:

"Everyone is the maker of their own luck."

Sometimes it's hard to believe in and live by, but most of the time I believe in that and try to live by it.

Works in English. "You make your own luck". Hear it all the time.

Of course it is. :blush: Why do I always have to make things harder? Thanks. :)

"From this distant vantage point, the Earth might not seem of any particular interest. But for us, it's different. Consider again that dot. That's here. That's home. That's us. On it everyone you love, everyone you know, everyone you ever heard of, every human being who ever was, lived out their lives. The aggregate of our joy and suffering, thousands of confident religions, ideologies, and economic doctrines, every hunter and forager, every hero and coward, every creator and destroyer of civilization, every king and peasant, every young couple in love, every mother and father, hopeful child, inventor and explorer, every teacher of morals, every corrupt politician, every "superstar," every "supreme leader," every saint and sinner in the history of our species lived there – on a mote of dust suspended in a sunbeam."

Damage Inc. & St. Anger

Damage Inc., verse 3:

"Damage jackals ripping right through you

Sight and smell of this, it gets me going

Know just how to get just what we want

Tear it from your soul in nightly hunt

**** it all and **** no regrets

Never happy endings on these dark sets

All's fair for Damage Inc. you see

Step a little closer if you please"

St. Anger chorus:

"**** it all and no regrets

I hit the lights on these dark sets

I'll tie a noose, I hang myself

St. Anger 'round my neck"

Arguably as clear a sign as any of how lyrically terrible St. Anger was...

Branch Rickey put it best: "Luck is the residue of design." I'm pretty sure that Fleming lifted it for one of the Bond novels (maybe On Her Majesty's Secret Service?)

The more I practise the luckier I get

shit or bust!

Don't let the bastards...

If you don't ask, you don't get.

It's only a game.

Keep on keepin' on.

yeah I'd say all of the above have been a bit of a mantra of late and have been quite useful, if a little cliched

IF you can keep your head when all about you

Are losing theirs and blaming it on you,

If you can trust yourself when all men doubt you,

But make allowance for their doubting too;

If you can wait and not be tired by waiting,

Or being lied about, don't deal in lies,

Or being hated, don't give way to hating,

And yet don't look too good, nor talk too wise:

If you can dream - and not make dreams your master;

If you can think - and not make thoughts your aim;

If you can meet with Triumph and Disaster

And treat those two impostors just the same;

If you can bear to hear the truth you've spoken

Twisted by knaves to make a trap for fools,

Or watch the things you gave your life to, broken,

And stoop and build 'em up with worn-out tools:

If you can make one heap of all your winnings

And risk it on one turn of pitch-and-toss,

And lose, and start again at your beginnings

And never breathe a word about your loss;

If you can force your heart and nerve and sinew

To serve your turn long after they are gone,

And so hold on when there is nothing in you

Except the Will which says to them: 'Hold on!'

If you can talk with crowds and keep your virtue,

Or walk with Kings - nor lose the common touch,

If neither foes nor loving friends can hurt you,

If all men count with you, but none too much;

If you can fill the unforgiving minute

With sixty seconds' worth of distance run,

Yours is the Earth and everything that's in it,

And - which is more - you'll be a Man, my son!

All men dream, but not equally. Those who dream by night in the dusty recesses of their minds, wake in the day to find that it was vanity: but the dreamers of the day are dangerous men, for they may act on their dreams with open eyes, to make them possible.

Well, I just lifted it randomly off the internet.

Now I know that, I've gone right off it.

laughter is always the best medicine, so I turn to Jack Donaghy of 30 Rock for life lessons.

“I believe that when you have a problem, you talk it over with your priest, or your tailor, or the mute elevator porter at your men’s club. Then you take that problem and you crush it with your mind vice. But for lesser beings, like curly haired men and people who need glasses, therapy can help.”

"The Italians have a saying, Lemon: 'Keep your friends close and your enemies closer.' And, although they've never won a war or mass-produced a decent car, in this area they are correct."

or, the incomparable Tracy Jordan from the same show:

"I believe that the moon does not exist. I believe that vampires are the world’s greatest golfers but their curse is they never get a chance to prove it. I believe that there are 31 letters in the white alphabet. Wait… what was the question?”
