Inside a Texas Building Where the Government Is Holding Immigrant Children

Quote

Hundreds of immigrant children who have been separated from their parents or family members are being held in dirty, neglectful, and dangerous conditions at Border Patrol facilities in Texas. This week, a team of lawyers interviewed more than fifty children at one of those facilities, in Clint, Texas, in order to monitor government compliance with the Flores settlement, which mandates that children must be held in safe and sanitary conditions and moved out of Border Patrol custody without unnecessary delays. The conditions the lawyers found were shocking: flu and lice outbreaks were going untreated, and children were filthy, sleeping on cold floors, and taking care of each other because of the lack of attention from guards. Some of them had been in the facility for weeks.

...

of course there are certain inherent costs in running a society that will be incurred, but as far as direct care, at the facilities that we have the numbers for, such as the large facilities like Homestead, it costs seven hundred and seventy-five dollars a day to care for these kids. There is no reason for the American taxpayer to have to pay seven hundred and seventy-five dollars a day to care for children who have families who love them, and are here in the United States, and want to take care of them. There are multiple kids that we could put on a plane this week to be with their parents in the United States. Many of them have never spoken with their parents since they got there.

It probably ought to say seven hundred and seventy-five dollars a day not to care.

Remember the pictures of that poor Syrian kid Alan Kurdi who was found drowned and washed ashore on a beach in Turkey trying to reach Greece a few years back

Well now the US and Trump have their own version of a father and his 2 year old daughter who drowned trying to cross the Mexican US border.

Not a pleasant picture.

Spoiler

It's one of those quotes that has done the rounds on the internet for years. Funny, but not true.

As Winston Churchill once said "most quotes on the internet are simply made up".

She was shot during an argument. The state has decided that she initiated and pressed the argument, and the shooter acted in self defence, that this therefore means she is responsible for being shot and therefore is her fault the foetus died.

This is insane.

Wow. So basically a case where they get to rave about the second amendment AND attack women’s rights. GOP porn, in other words.

Sick.

(edit: forgot the obvious point about racism to complete the full GOP porn hat trick.)

Meanwhile, in response to Trump kicking things off last week, the Dems kicked things off in style with the first 10 of their 20 getting at it hardcore... errrr msnbc moderated style.

Media gurus talking about how this could be a record election cycle for them, i.e., $$$$.

Rather depressingly, I overheard 2 students chatting in starbucks (feck off coffee snobs!) yesterday who were talking about careers in politics. They were specifically talking about how it would be a great career choice given the deadlock in Washington, so there'll be many more years of mental election nonsense to come.

Depressing.

Just watched last night’s debate in full. I have to say, perhaps naively, that I like a lot of what Dems are talking about right now. Warren, Booker and Castro were impressive.

I hope they narrow the field soon, though.

Booker is a bought and paid for shill for the pharma (somewhat, marginally understandable given the US med system) and charter school (unforgivable, full stop) industries.

It'll be interesting to see how the media/dems try and blackball Gabbard and Sanders this time around.

The 2nd debate just seemed to have more firepower than the first this week.

I was really really impressed by Buttigieg. Seemed to be very thoughtful and actually took responsibility for a failure unlike a few others.

Everyone's saying that Kamala Harris had great debate and I don't disagree but she didn't really provide much in terms of policies.

Also I wouldn't be surprised if Sanders is finished. Just running on the same platform that he did in 2016 just doesn't do it for me.

Right-wing  Democrats suck so hard:

Good stuff this. It's easy to see how Terri Sewell (to pick one egregious example) is really helping the voters of Alabama's seventh congressional district here

I wonder what could possibly be motivating her?

Could it be money (spoiler alert, it's the money)
