U.S. Politics

Nice to see the US come out and confess to murdering 10 innocent people in order to provide a distraction from Biden's political disaster that was the Afghan imbroglio. Weeks later though, so shame on me for not leaving this well alone down the memory hole.

It's all ok though... because it was a "tragic mistake".

WASHINGTON, Sept 17 (Reuters) - A drone strike in Kabul last month killed as many as 10 civilians, including seven children, the U.S. military said on Friday, apologizing for what it called a "tragic mistake".

Poor old Joe and his plans for the "people". Lots of posturing regarding the human infrastructure bill and of course plenty of mouthing to the nearest microphone, at least from the congressional critters. Joe is somewhat awol as per usual.

""The only way the vote happens (Thursday) is if we have the votes to pass the bill," Representative Dan Kildee, House Democrats' chief deputy whip, told reporters."

No government shutdown with the Senate behaving like adults for once. The debt ceiling game continues and so does the Dem infighting, with Nancy holding the neo-lib line.

So much positioning for the midterms happening right now, with arguments both for and against a failure to pass the human infrastructure bill being a benefit for the Dems.

Ok, thanks for the update.

You are very welcome. Any thoughts on how these negotiations are going? That would be the one that blew up this afternoon after Biden got involved and resulted in no change to anyone's position and all sorts of interesting tidbits leaking from the Dem meeting this afternoon,.

Idaho is an extremely funny state. There are basically no Democrats there at all, so all political contestation is between 'mainstream' Republicans (reluctantly supported by the handful of Democrats) and much more right-wing Republicans.

This dynamic can lead to some amusing situations, such as the one detailed in this tweet:

The back story here is that Brad Little is a very right-wing governor, but nevertheless a mainstream Republican, and so a leftist squish by the standards of Idaho politics. In common with lots of other Republicans, he has travelled to the southern border to angrily denounce the Biden administration for letting too many brown people in (you might look at a map and wonder why the governor of Idaho would care about this, but this is what the team are doing these days so there you are). Part of Brad Little's lefty squishiness is that he has taken some extremely minimal measures to tackle covid - Idaho currently has the highest per-capita death rate in the country.

However, his Lieutenant Governor is much further to the right, and she has seized on the opportunity of him being out of state on his little junket to pass an executive order:

With Little out of state, McGeachin issues order banning COVID-19 testing, vaccination at schools

'While serving as acting governor on Tuesday, Lt. Gov. Janice McGeachin issued a new executive order banning public schools and the State Department of Education from requiring COVID-19 testing or vaccinations.

McGeachin issued the executive order while Gov. Brad Little was out of state traveling to Texas to visit the U.S. border with Mexico along with nine other governors from the West.

The Idaho Constitution states that the lieutenant governor serves as acting governor while the governor is out of state.

McGeachin also unsuccessfully attempted to deploy Idaho National Guard troops to the country’s southern border, the Associated Press reported.

[...]

In May, while Little was out of state on a different trip, McGeachin issued an executive order banning mask mandates — even though the state never has had a mask mandate in place. Little responded the next day by rescinding the executive order retroactively and calling McGechin’s actions a “irresponsible, self-serving political stunt.”

In 2019, during yet a different instance where Little was out of state, McGeachin presided over a rally of the Real 3%ers of Idaho militia group and administered an oath to the group’s members.'

Fantastic stuff, never stop entertaining me Idaho!

Is minting a $1 trillion platinum coin the answer to the debt limit crisis?

Could a $1 trillion platinum coin be the solution to the U.S. government's debt limit crisis?

Before reaching a short-term deal to end a standoff and avert a U.S. default, some senators and other proponents renewed talk of the improbable idea.

The U.S. government was set to run out of money to pay its bills, including salaries of federal employees and to pay Social Security benefits, which the White House and experts say would have had grave economic effects and could trigger a recession.

Legislation enacted in 2001 allows the treasury to mint platinum coins of any value without congressional approval. Under that law, the coin's value could be anything, but it would have to be platinum, not gold or silver, nickel, bronze or copper, which are under Congress' control.

So, in theory, President Joe Biden could order Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen to have a coin with the value of $1 trillion be minted and deposited into the Treasury, giving the government an extra trillion dollars to cover debts and prevent default.

The idea was floated before in 2011 when the government faced another debt ceiling crisis. Former President Barack Obama said in 2017, on the podcast "Pod Save America," that he and his advisers discussed use of a trillion dollar coin as a safety valve.

"There were all kind of wacky ideas about how potentially you could .... have this massive coin." Obama said in the 2017 interview. "I mean ... it was some primitive -- it was like out of the Stone Age or something and I pictured rolling in some coin."

Trump suggests Haitian migrants heading for US ‘probably have AIDS

Former President Donald Trump suggested without evidence Thursday night that thousands of Haitian migrants who are reported to be heading for the US-Mexico border are afflicted by AIDS.

“We have hundreds of thousands of people flowing in from Haiti,” Trump told Fox News’ Sean Hannity. “Haiti has a tremendous AIDS problem. AIDS is a step beyond. AIDS is a real bad problem.

“So hundreds of thousands of people are coming into our country that if you look at the stats, if you look at the numbers, if you look at – just take a look at what’s happening in Haiti, a tremendous problem with AIDS,” the former president added. “Many of those people will probably have AIDS and they’re coming into our country and we don’t do anything about it. We let everybody come in. Sean, it’s like a death wish. It’s like a death wish for our country.”
