New TV advice

I think I have decided on a LG 55" for the living room and a 42" for the bedroom wall. Hoping Xmas sales brings the prices down

Getting a good quality TV is mainly about the panel/screen quality. I have two, a 42 inch and a 40 inch, both Samsung. The 42 inch is a 6 series from 2010 if I remember correctly, the 40 inch is a 6 series from last year. The 42 inch is still going strong and although getting slightly outdated it is a great TV.

I honestly couldn't recommend the new 6 series more, fantastic screen and with built-in WiFi I can run Netflix as well as use the TV's built in DLNA support, so I can stream films or TV programs from my computer. It did set me back £800, although I think you could probably get one cheaper now. Size seems bigger than 40 inches as the bezel is extremely slim. Initially I wanted even bigger, maybe a 47 inch, but now I'm glad I didn't. I'd wait till after Xmas definitely, but I wouldn't ever budge from a Samsung now I don't think.

Not bad for the price but I guess the hint is in the name of that page. 'Budget' is exactly what it is - 2 HDMI ports and an outdated SCART port, no mention of anything else like optical audio out and so on. The best part I'd say is that it comes with a Wi-Fi dongle.

Personally I'd try and get a 32 inch with a better panel for around about the same price. Are you adamant about the size?

I'd recommend a Samsung F5500 if not. 2013 model with built-in Wi-Fi for your Netflix, iPlayer and such. Links below, £329:

40 inch version of the F5500 is £429, so a bit more than the one you posted:

Just got this 60" for a room we've done as a sort of home cinema:

So far seems like a quality bit of kit.

Looks nice that.  Have you had someone round to calibrate it?

Pacific Rim is a great disc for showing off a telly. Film itself is no classic but dumb fun, but it looks so good. Both 3d and 2d pictures are near flawless and blacks and neons. Makes for a great spectacle.

OLED is potentially brilliant tech - talk of all the benefits of plasma with less drawbacks, etc etc.

The curved thing they're doing, however, is entirely cosmetic - they've only done it to show off the ability of the technology, and it actually makes the screen less flexible for use in the home - you can't wall mount it, for example. But a couple of generations down the line, OLED might be a fabulous no brainer option.

Will be fantastic for soundbar manufacturers as well, OLED screens can be so thin that a speaker would be beyond shit (even worse than the LED screens we already have).

I think it likely that manufacturers will look at distributed mode technology again.

I own a pair of NXT speakers. They are picture frames and have a pair of prints in them. They worked really well for what I bought them for and had sound much better than you'd expect from flat speakers.
