On the verge of an England call up a few times since he's been here.

Best player on the pitch in various games.

Talked about as England's natural replacement for Carrick.

None of that has ever happened.

That's actually quite sad :(

Yeah, I got a pang of pity there too... he's just a human like we are. We don't boo opposition players like some fans have booed Westwood. Not his biggest fan, and actually think he's pretty poor, but what do we as fans have to gain by booing one of our players?

The 'Boo' sound can carry and be quite loud, so it probably isn't many people to make quite a bit of boo noise... ?

Times were we used to berate and hate the opposition, now we take it out on our own. That's so wrong.

Yes please. I remember him saying he likes to play like Carrick but people saying he was his successor and was on the verge of a call up. Who are these people? He is a shit footballer and has been out his depth since the day he signed....and still is today!

Sherwood said it, I think. So meaningless really.

Seriously? Just because it doesn't fit in with your agenda doesn't mean it didn't happen. These things aren't hard to verify and if you say things like 'none of that has ever happened' you need to be pretty sure it didn't.

Sherwood:

http://www.90min.com/posts/2489148-is-the-in-form-ashley-westwood-a-dark-horse-for-an-england-call-up-this-season

"Last season, Westwood made more tackles than the likes of John Stones (Everton), more interceptions than Branislav Ivanovic (Chelsea), and is hitting form while England are short on long-term central midfield options."

http://www.express.co.uk/sport/football/599325/Aston-Villa-England-Man-Utd-Michael-Carrick-Ashley-Westwood-Tim-Sherwood

"I will be very surprised if Ashley doesn't play for England this season," Sherwood said. "He's as good as that.

Lambert before Sherwood:

http://www.skysports.com/football/news/11677/9471596/premier-league-aston-villa-boss-paul-lambert-backs-ashley-westwood-for-england-call

Lambert believes Westwood also has plenty to offer the national team.

“Westy’s a very clever player,” he told reporters. “He goes unnoticed, but it’s up to the England manager.

Not just Villa managers either. Adrian Durham:

http://www.sport.net/tom-huddlestone-mark-noble-and-ashley-westwood-would-fit-england-but-not-lee-cattermole_250348

"I’ve been an admirer of Aston Villa’s Ashley Westwood for a long time and I definitely see him as an option at the base of a diamond for England. His ability from set-pieces is one of his main strengths, but he has so much more. He can read the game, his defensive work off the ball isn’t always obvious on TV but is a stand-out feature when you watch him live, and he keeps things simple. He gets the ball, and gives it to a team-mate - keeping possession is his main objective, and once again that is something England haven’t always been good at. I’m amazed a player so good on the ball has not had any international recognition at any level. He admits he bases his style on what Michael Carrick has been doing for Manchester United for many successful years. I just hope that Westwood doesn’t suffer the same fate at international level where Carrick was shamefully ignored during his peak years."

As for best player on the pitch, it's quite subjective. In various places in this thread it'll be there. I've certainly had him as my MOTM previously and I certainly haven't been alone.

Even Micah Richards, who visibly slacks off during games and clearly couldn't give a shit doesn't get booed during matches. I honestly can't remember the last time one of our own players got booed without a certain negative incident happening beforehand.

Westwood has been a model professional and nothing but respectful of our club during his time here, and being booed while wearing the Villa colours for no other crime than not living up to some people's subjective standards on players is seriously one of the most embarrassing things I've witnessed from our fans.

Bacuna was picked on for a comment he made in an interview

Scott Sinclair gave the ball away constantly. Never heard him get booed. Guess he is 'fashionable' and has a hot wife.

Oh look, more stuff that never happened. He was never MOTM apparently

"Surprised this didn't get bumped. Our best player tonight. "

"Agree he was MOTM for me"

"As I saw it, it was a toss up between Westwood & Amavi for MOTM"

"Motm last night, played some great balls and put in some great set pieces"

"My MOTM. Well done lad."

"Bossed it tonight. MOTM."

Here you, there are loads. All pretty easy to find https://www.villatalk.com/search/?&q=motm&type=forums_topic&page=1&item=7124

Here's another one: https://www.villatalk.com/search/?q=best+player&type=forums_topic&item=7124

Search is a wonderful thing. It allows you to find out facts rather than your own revisionist opinion.

@rodders0223 enough evidence or are you still to be convinced about him being on the verge of an England callup, being talked about as a replacement for Carrick, or being the best player on the pitch in various games?

That's how I saw (heard?) it too.

If he is getting booed purely for coming onto the pitch then that's ridiculous. Can't stand the guy and want him gone ASAP but booing him for the sake of it is only going to have a negative effect on the team.

So two managers bigged up their player (shock). He never on the verge of an England call up.

BTW Durham is an utter clown. I think he once called Jack Colback the ginger Pirlo. So call up for Italy any day now then.

FFS did neither of you even read what I've linked? I give up. It's there in black and white.

Sherwood, Lambert, Adrian Durham in the press. So reported _in the press_, as in, in newspapers. It was around the time Delph and Carrick were called up and there was discussion on talksport, social media etc about Westwood being called up or not.

Ignoring all the other stuff?

And only about 8 pages worth of it being discussed by people on here. https://www.villatalk.com/search/?q=england&type=forums_topic&item=7124

So you are ignoring the other stuff about the MOTMs?

Seriously, I give up. You're obviously happy in your bubble.

Yeah I remember that stuff. I remember at the time posting a comment laughing at people saying he could play for England. Why would I take views on a messageboard from naturally biased and emotionAl fans? Have you seen any clubs messageboard place after a win? Suddenly all is forgetten and everyone is Pele. Westwood wasn't good enough then and he isn't good enough now.
