omariqy
I was really happy when we signed him as I had seen quite a few Boro games where he had excelled. However, he has been woeful for us. He has good technique and has the odd good game but he has a long way to go. Maybe championship ishis level?
dont_do_it_doug.
Some random responses on the same page. My only point was that the opinion that he was awful was not a universal one. It's the end of the season, let's see what the staff can do, what he can do and give him until at least christmas. I've seen enough good games from him to think there's something there, just need to give him to tools to go and do it week in week out now. He did improve and has some decent attributes so I hope Lambert sticks with him and he can have a good pre-season, then start the season strongly. I'd be loathe to write him off this early, he and Lambert both deserve a bit more time. Gets way too much stick in my opinion. He's not perfect by any means but he's a good footballer, he's young, he'll get even better. We could do with another fullback, yeah, but we need to build a squad anyway. Not much in the way of actually complimenting his performances. No opinion is universal. But my opinion is he was shit, and I think the majority of people shared that view. If he hasn't improved then he's third choice for LB based on ability, and as a result should probably be offloaded if possible. If he has improved then it's a whole other story, but like I said there's not much evidence of that.
Davkaus
He set the benchmark for shit leftbacks when he played regularly for us. He was nowhere near good enough for the PL, but then, neither are we. He couldn't get a single appearance while at Bournemouth or Sheffield Wedsneday which suggests he hasn't improved a great deal. A full year without playing first team football at the age of 26, it's not a ringing endorsement. He played most of the season before for Brighton. Having a read through their forum, even their fans think he's pretty shit.
PieFacE Posted July 11, 2016 VT Supporter Share Posted July 11, 2016 (edited) Personally, I'd rather a left back who is shit at defending but has "something" going forward, than a left back who is shit at defending and awful going forward, and struggles to pass a ball 5 yards. Aly is probably my least favourite player in this squad now next to Gabby. He's so painful to watch live. I'd rather watch Bennett. Both are pretty rubbish at defending so it makes very little difference. Edited July 11, 2016 by PieFacE
dounavilla
I recall Bennett being extremely weak and having next to no skill or confidence. Always looked like an accident waiting to happen.

I don't know if you can claim that the majority of people shared that view without inventing a time machine and taking a poll. My opinion is that after almost 3 years out in the wilderness I'd like to see what has become of Joe at a level that is likely more suitable, because I always thought we wrote him off waaaay too soon.
KSV
Will be a decent back up to Amavi. Cissohko probably will leave.

I did find this from a Sheffield Wednesday fan upon his injury last season - Quote Bad news. He's looked assured when I've seen him. Take it with a pinch of salt, but at least he did see him play... The general trend seems to be "not bad going forward, but a terrible defender", which I think is a fair reflection of his Villa days too. They also seem to quite like his hair, so he's got that going for him. Quote Good going forward but can lose the ball easily. Terrible defender, the worst LB I've seen in a long time. In fact I'm loathed to refer to him as a defender cause he cant defend.Nice hair though..... Quote He was all right. Surprised that he's 25, looked about 18. Bit skinny and very paceyDefensively not as bad as some make out, but decent going forward.Definitely had the SHARPEST haircut.

I forgot about his Brighton loan in fairness. All I'd say to that is plenty are writing off Gardner and Baker for playing for struggling championship clubs, Brighton just avoided relegation the season he was there and were shipping plenty of goals. At the risk of repeating the age gags on the other thread, I was amazed to find Bennett was 26, had him down as 22/23. Really this isn't some young prospect we're talking about, we should be expecting consistent performances, same for Clark who some still seem to view as a young prospect when he's been regular for us for 6 years now. Zatman
Cissokho for me at back end of season was absolute atrocious, he was slightly better than Richardson but doesnt mean much rather try Bennett at back up than Cissokho
Demitri_C
People really have forgotten how shit bennett is wow. Honestly we have had some crap left backs but Bennett was by far the worst i have seen.
Zatman
Cissokho, Luna and Richardson were just as bad even worse in some cases though they all make Shorey and Warnock look top-class

Fair enough. Opinions and all that. Personally I'd rather have kept Richardson than Bennett IF Bennett hasn't improved. That's how bad he is/was, imo. cyrusr Posted July 11, 2016 VT Supporter Share Posted July 11, 2016 I am not sure why people are getting so het up about Joe Bennett? Yes he hasn't been very good in the past; Cissohko hasn't been great either. What ever happens it seems that one of them will be back up to Amavi, the other will likely leave. RDM is given them both a fair chance to prove themselves. If he thinks they aren't good enough then he will get rid of both and bring someone else in. That isn't rocket science, but am I missing something?
