Plus with QPR they'll just chuck a load more money at the situation in Jan.

I still think we'll be ok though, still early days in Lambert's tenure, still plenty of scope for the current squad to improve and still a number of unknowns that may turn into quality players.

Would expect Bennet to get his chance now, and with Ireland out the midfield will need a shuffle. Maybe i'm foolish but at present I'm more optimistic than pessimistic over the remainder of the season.

I was thinking the same thing. Lambert has played it right. He bought a good few players but he was right to keep them on the bench as motivation for the existing players to perform. It showed that he hadn't just dismissed the players that were here already. But now that we've taken a hiding that is in many ways inexcusable, he is entitled to shuffle the pack and no-one who is dropped can have any complaints. I expect Lichaj to be dropped as he was exposed a few times. It's a shame, but when you've a specialist leftback waiting in the wings, it makes sense to bring him in.

I'm not sure he'll make the changes for the Citeh game though. He might use that as a 'chance' for the current line-up to redeem themselves. That way the new guys don't come into the fold and take a potential hiding off City wrecking their confidence before the derby game.

Entirely agree would have been unfair to drop Lichaj after a win and a clean sheet.

The city game we take 1 of 2 approaches we go a la houllier and admit defeat throwing in a weakened side of players that need pitch time or we take a punt on the fact they'll throw in a weakened side and try to win it with what is close to our strongest side.

We should have signed Berbatov, Adam and Johnson and then kept Cuellar. Those players would have walked right into our first team and secured our Premiership safety. We could then have purchased 1 or 2 young players and given them the required time to get up to speed with the Premiership.

We have already brought the wages down and with Dunne probably leaving at the end of the season along with Hutton and Warnock then there would have been plenty of room to sign the aforementioned players.

As it is we are playing 'Russian Roulette' with our Premiership safety at exactly the wrong time with the increase in TV revenue ready to hit.

Not a very sensible approach IMO. Although in transfer fees we might have ended up paying around the same it would send the wage bill sky-high again. Pretty sure them three alone would take up a good 150k on the wage bill. Not even sure they would be worthwhile purchases either. Berbatov while obviously a quality player is getting on a bit now and would only be a short-term solution. Johnson is alright but I'm not sure he'd be worth the wages and I really don't rate Adam at all.

No, I'm glad we did what we did. Lambert is building for the future and he's doing it sensibly too IMO.

A win at St Mary's and the mods could have locked it down.

That makes no sense.

Which part are you struggling with ?

probably the fact that you think a win in the 5th game of the season wouldve meant we were safe

Will see PL's skills at adapting his side now. The faults in the side were evident on Saturday, so it will be interesting to see where he takes us from here. I wonder will Albrighton get a look in, which would mean a change in the formation. Maybe Albrighton and gabby either side of Benteke. Will be interesting to see how he replaces Ireland in the side also.

I don't think it will be a case of keeping this formation and swapping the personnel around.

At the minute, the table/form says that West Brom will get in the champions league, Man City won't qualify for europe, Liverpool will go down and we will be safe.

People just need to stop thinking a 2-0 win over swansea means we are amazing and a 4-1 defeat means were going down.

Its football, you cant read it from week to week. It sounds like it was an appalling 2nd half display. It happens.

We havent got great players, this is going to take time, and its going to be very up & down and at times frustrating. However, it will be easier to handle if we don't go into games bigging up unproven players like Vlaar/KEA and Benteke as if they are world beaters.

Lets just go with the flow for a bit.

I agree with everything here, although I wouldn't say KEA and Vlaar are unproven.

Unproven in the premier league.

Unproven in the premier league.

They're both internationals and played for one of Holland's best teams. Alright they're technically unproven in the Premier League but so are the likes of Hazard and Cazorla*

*Not that they're comparable in ability, just pointing out that being "unproven in the Premier League" isn't the be all and end all.

No, its not. And Im not saying they definitely won't/will be a success.

They are both internationals and on the whole have been ok since signing. The vlaar thread is on the verge of embarrassing in terms of overrating players. We always do the same (as will all football fans), and Im certainly not saying that having a realistic opinion and writing it on villa talk is a way to make the football team win matches.

However, I believe it will help people to have a more balanced opinion from week to week.

Not that I want to tell people how to live, or that I dont find villa talk hugely entertaining as it is :D

Actually think the signings of Adam, Berbatov and Johnson and keeping Cuellar would have secured our status in the Premiership without first worrying whether the lower league players Lambert has brought in instead can cut it in the Premiership. This is no time to gamble with our Premiership status with the increase in TV revenue approaching and as previously stated the wages issue has been already dealt with, coupled with the probable departures of Dunne, Warnock and Hutton either in January, or at the end of the season!

The wage issue has only been 'dealt' with because we havn't replaced the likes of Beye, Heskey, Cuellar, NRC et al with the likes of Adam, Berbatov, Johnson et al.

Whilst they probably do reflect a significant short-term improvement on what we have, that level of spending was deemed unsustainable to a club with an income as limited as ours.

We simply cannot afford to pay our entire starting 11 in excess of £40k a week, and if the UEFA regs are accepted by the league, meetings happening over next 2 days I believe, that will be stated by the league and not just our owner.
