So, the Pompey squad is looking a bit threadbare...

What actually happened to Portsmouth? People mention Arry's role in this but I think he brought money in on the likes of Muntari. When they had four owners, or thereabouts, in a couple of seasons were they all pocketing the money? It's a disgrace what happened and I feel sorry for the fans.

You still wonder if a few years of awesome followed by this was worth it when the alternative would have been another 20 years of lower mid table obscurity in The Championship.

Thats not really what I meant. If they hadnt spent the money, had a few years in the sunshine, saw some great players and won the cup then the alternative would have almost certainly have been to continue as a club who finishes 15th in the Championship every year. Yes, they would still be in a position to finish 15th in the Championship next year too, but dont they say its better to live one day as a lion than a hundred years as a sheep?

My Portsmouth supporting friend tells me that yes, he would happily swap a couple of FA Cup finals and playing AC Milan in Europe if it meant being a stable club that he knows will be able to fulfil its fixtures in a couple of weeks time.

I've heard a rumour through a guy at work that there is a big announcement coming on thursday that they have gone completely now.

how much truth there is in it i'm not sure, and if they had gone completely surely the announcement would have been made today?

The Pompey mediocrity or brief glory is an interesting question.

On a much reduced scale my local club had a similar trajectory. We had a perfectly adequate lower league team happy to bob along in the Beazer Midland and Beazer Prem etc.. Then, due to some crappy politics the team had to join the Welsh pyramuddle. Dropped in one league down from the ‘top’ flight of Welsh footy they decided that if they were in it, they may as well win it. A few short and bizarre years later and they are setting records. They went a season without losing a game, they had a policy of only scoring nine as any more was perceived as disrespectful. They beat the likes of Cardiff, Swansea and Wrexham in various Welsh only cup competitions. They regularly qualified for Europe. Amongst many many others, we entertained Dynamo Kiev, Porto, Boavista and Aberdeen in legitimate European games. We had away trips all over Europe from Malta to Macedonia and all points in between. We’ve been ‘what happened next’ on A Question of Sport! We funded one eastern block away trip by buying up dirt cheap leather trench coats, packing the bus with them and selling them on the town market when we got back home. I missed the trip to Azerbaijan (we won) but the stories that came back of helping orphanages and visiting, erm, adult leisure centres were just awe inspiring. I organised one away trip to Portugal and got my schedule a bit wrong, arriving back home three days later than I’d told the missus. I was grounded for the next few games. One game had to be postponed when the gaggle of Albanian match officials arrived at the Airport safely, checked into a hotel….and were never seen again.

Myth and legend has it we sold our TV rights exclusively to TV Africa! A venture set up by John Fashanu with joint offices in London and Lagos. Fash brought in Nigerian youth international players, it was bonkers. We’d pitch up in mid Wales on foggy November evenings, they’d have the local young farmers playing for them, we’d have 4 Nigerians, 2 Pakistan internationals and a kid from Malta that had been told we were officially Man Utd’s feeder club.

Then it became apparent that actually it was an utterly unsustainable model. They’ve nearly gone under a few times, they’ve been kicked out of their home, relegated and generally abused. But, the team still exists, the 125 fans still meet up to chat and laugh and shout random abuse at tubby balding midfielders.

Overall, I’m happy with having savoured cup wins, glory nights and European travel. There is no substitute for standing on your local terrace, knowing you helped put the programme together and paint the toilets, with Deco or Shevchenko or whoever stood on your pitch with Champions League music playing. I’ll take that over a guaranteed tenth place for eternity.

yeah, apologies for the unreadable block of text, I'm blaming i.t. issues.

The mighty mighty Barry Town. They're playing Cardiff tonight in a fundraiser friendly.

Back in the day I was banned by the owner, the local paper got hold of it and ran a small one paragraph piece on 'banned football fans'. That had the potential to land me in serious trouble with my work. Luckily, I was able to get in early and fill in the rest of the story. I hadn't attended a few games, the owner thought I was boycotting his new inititatives and banned me and a handful of others for daring to challenge him. In actual fact I was able to prove I'd been working overseas but had neglected to o.k. it with the retarded turd first.

It was a good indicator of the calibre of the man that he would ban people for not attending and then partially retract the ban by telling the local paper he would only lift the ban if we started coming to games again.

Believe it or not, happy times.

Anyway, back on Portsmouth, apparently there is a make or break day coming up on Friday.

What an absolute arse for the fans of Portsmouth. T'was a great away day to be sure on the south coast.

I swear I looked at the wikipedia page of their squad not 2 days ago and they just about had 10 men. I suppose the only remaining question is either

a) Can Portsmouth City Council buy Fratton Park and lease it back to a new club or

B) Can Hampshire County Council buy Fratton Park and lease it back to a new club?

The fans of Wrexham, Chester, Portsmouth, Notts County and many others have suffered the hard way. Why the **** don't the bodies "regulating" these clubs' ownerships DO their jobs properly?
