Ron Vlaar

We offered him a contract.  He refused because he saw himself as a bigger fish.  Then his knee went.  Tough.

I think I saw earlier today that he's now training with AZ Alkmaar.

we dont actually miss him though, Richards has been twice the player of Vlaar and is a lot more durable. Decent player on his day but he looked awful at the end of last season

Agree, had more mistakes in him than Baker, and that's saying something.

This is just plainly not true.

Why would you only measure from there when he was at the club for almost 3 years before that?

(not that it's true anyway. Vlaar made one or two high profile mistakes in that time, but mistakes in general? No chance)

By the end, Ron was SO slow that his late lunge on Coutinho in the cup semi was so late it not only didn't clatter him meaning a red for Ron and a penalty, didn't even come near him

Well whaddya know :)

It's clear what happened was that after he had a really solid World Cup, he started getting linked to Man Ure - and notably started believing the murmurs of the hype train. Decided he didn't need to renew his contract as he'd have a long list of suitors, then bang, long term injury.

yes i remember he was meant to get that big United move, i actually think he would have done alright for them at the time, probably better than some of the shambolic signings they signed around that time. But then you pays your money you takes your choice and he was up shit creek when the knee blew out.

He wasnt the greatest but not the worst. replacing him with Richards and Lescott was a shocking swap

Some guy called Zatman praising Richards on this page just above certainly one for the archives. 😉

Yeah seen better like Mellberg, Laursen and Dunne in his first season. Ron's level probably similar to Mings, errors here and there but we certainly needed his leadership with what was around him at the time.

Always remember he had that brilliant world cup and then him and Senderos started the season in excellent form but of course Vlaar then got injured and was out for 3-4 months and we never regained that solidity in the season.

The drugs were strong that day. He did OK first 5/6 games in fairness then he got partnered with the clown
